Cannondale, Norco and Trek Bicycle Recalls Due to Crash Hazard

More than 21,000 Norco, Cannondale and Trek bicycles have been recalled, as they all could contain a defective suspension fork made by the same company, which could cause a crash and possible rider injuries.

The Cannondale, Norco and Trek bicycle recall notices were posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on May 19, 2009.

All of the recalled bikes utilize suspension forks manufactured by JD Components, which may have been assembled incorrectly. The JD suspension forks may lose alignment and cause the front wheel to turn suddenly. If this occurs, the rider may lose control and have a serious bicycle accident.

At least one injury has been reported involving a Norco bicycle, where the rider suffered a fractured collarbone as a result of the faulty suspension fork.

The majority of the recalled bicycles are 2009 Trek 7300, 7300WSD, and 7500 bicycles, with 16,000 units affected. The CPSC indicates that these models of Trek bicycles contain the words “Bontrager SPA” printed on the suspension fork.

The Norco bicycle recall includes about 3,600 units, including the 2007 Team DH, 2008 Team DH, Aline Park, Aline, Atomik, Shore 1,2,3, and 2009 Atomik (without gussets) models. The model name should be printed on the top tube of each bike.

Another 1,600 units were including in the Cannondale Adverture bicycle recall, including 2008 Cannondale Adventure 2, Adventure 3, Adventure 2 Feminine and Adventure 3 Feminine bicycles. The model names are printed on the frame, and the forks have “Cannondale AT35 adventure trail” printed on them.

Owners of any of these recalled bicycles have been urged to immediately stop using them and contact a dealer to arrange free repairs.

In 2008, another Trek bicycle recall was issued for about 4,900 MT220 girl’s bikes, due to frame failures that caused at least 13 bicycle accidents and four reports of personal iinjuries.

I had an accident on 9/13/2008 as a result of a Cannondale rear fork breaking. I suffered a traumatic brain injury, hearing loss, I had a tracheostomy, PEG tube and physical therapy for a while. I was in a coma for 2 weeks that was drug induced. Do I have a case? Thans

I just had an accident similar to Mark's (the entry of 25 August 2010). I suffered a great deal of damage to my left arm, and thank God for my helmet, otherwise I most likely would have had face and head injury too. Is there any one else that has experienced this type of problem with Cannondale bikes?

Any recalls on 2010 Cannondale Flash with Lefty fork and Shamano disc brakes? I went over the bars Aug. 22, 2010, and don't know why. It's as if the front brake locked up but I have no memory of the details. It could be rider error, but I have 20 years experience riding mountain bike, and used to race motocross, so I know how to use the front brake.

The RST fork on my Trek 800 failed a couple years ago. Please email me at turtlecroc@yahoo.com if you've had anything similar, especially with an RST fork.

I was riding a Cannondale T600 on 8/12/2009 my fork broke, I went face first into the blacktop at about 20mph. Broke my teeth, shattered my jaw, fractured my neck and gave me a spinal cord injury. After inspecting the bike the fork had rusted from the inside where you could not see it. Anyone else out there had any such trouble?

Has anyone experienced front fork catastrophic failure involving Bontrager Carbon Fiber forks. Mine were on a Trek 2100. The forks failed when I applied the brakes abruptly on a flat bike path at approximately 10 mph. Three year old daily commuter bike, never raced or taken off-road. I've heard two anecdotal stories involving failure of these forks. Anyone else?

Does anyone have information on trek bike brakes failing? I had a front brake lock up and was still locked after my crash.
