Approximately 19,000 Cybex treadmills have been recalled after owners reported having their treadmill malfunction and suddenly increase in speed. This could pose a fall hazard for users.

The U.S. Consumer product Safety Commission and Cybex International, Inc. announced the recall yesterday, urging owners of certain Cybex treadmills sold between January 2001 and September 2008 to stop using the recalled products.

The Cybex treadmill recall applies to the 445T, 455T, 530T, 515T and 520T models, which were sold for between $5,500 and $7,000 throughout the United States.

The treadmills are gray and black with rectangular uprights containing a console with a display panel the same width as the treadmill. The model number and “Cybex” are written on the console.

The recalled treadmill models include those that measure 72 inches long by 32 inches wide and 81 inches long by 32 inches wide.

At least 24 reports have been received by Cybex International, Inc. of speed control problems with the Cybex treadmills, including 6 users who suffered a fall.

Owners have been advised to unplug the recalled treadmills and stop using them immediately. Cybex is offering free replacement fuses, which will be installed by a Cybex technician free of charge. Registered owners will be contacted directly by the manufacturer.

For additional information, Cybex can be contacted toll-free at (866) 897-9199 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday-Friday. The firm’s website can be visited at www.Cybexintl.com.
