Dole Spinach Salad Recall Issued Over Salmonella Fears

Federal health regulators are recalling bags of Dole Spinach in at least 13 states, after testing found that they may be contaminated with salmonella.

A Dole spinach recall was announced by the FDA on October 13, after random sample testing from the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development found that Salmonella bacteria was present in some bags.

While no cases of salmonella food poisoning have been reported in association with the spinach products, this may pose a serious health risk for consumers, especially the elderly, children and those with a weakened immune system.

Salmonella infections can cause mild to severe health consequences depending upon the individual. The bacteria may cause a healthy person to experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain whereas the young or elderly with weakened immune systems may face more severe consequences, including fatal infections. In some reported cases, Salmonella infections in pregnant women have been known to cause still births and miscarriages. Occasionally, salmonella infections may travel through the bloodstream and produce illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

Customers with recalled products are being asked to stop consuming them immediately and discard of any remaining. Dole Fresh Vegetables customer service has begun contacting retailers and is in the process of confirming that all potentially infected products are removed from the market and store shelves. Customers and retailers with questions may contact Dole Food Company’s Consumer Response Center at 800-356-3111 for further questions.
