EdenPURE Infrared Space Heater Lawsuit Filed Over House Fire

A Texas homeowner has filed a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer of a space heater that allegedly caused her home to burn down.

The complaint was filed on August 10 in the Eastern District of Texas, Tyler Division by the Texas Farm Bureau Management Corp. on behalf of Temple Bolt, whose home burned down two days after Christmas as a result of a fire that was allegedly caused by an EdenPURE infrared space heater manufactured by Suarez Corp. Industries, doing business as Sci Direct.

According to the lawsuit, the model 1000XL EdenPURE heater lacked a safety device to protect against overheating and sufficient thermal protection. The lawsuit claims that the company failed to design a product that could be reasonably safe for consumers and failed to properly warn them of the potential safety risks.

The lawsuit seeks $232,548 to cover the loss of Bolt’s house, its contents, her assisted living expenses, interest and court costs. It accuses the company of defectively designing the space heater, advertising a defective product, failing to warn consumers of the safety risks of the EdenPURE space heater and negligence.

Earlier this year Costco, recalled about 200 EdenPURE 1000 space heaters after one Costco employee reported that their heater had melted. The manufacturer said that the Costco unit was likely damaged during shipping or storage and was not a sign of defective manufacturing.

I haven't had any trouble with my Edenpure heaters. They are the best I've ever had.

I owned an edanpure for 15 years with no problems. Eventually the motor gave out. Ordered a new equivalent and after two years it melted the plug and the socket it was plugged into. The original heater was made in US. The replacement was made in China. Will not purchase again.

Unplugged my mom's Gen40 Super Heater-Cooler A5964. The outlet was burned on the top plug only where the appliance was plugged in. The plug itself was melted on one side and was crooked. While the lamp plugged in was not. Fortunately nothing happened while my mother was home alone. She said she had owned it for about 1 year. We now have to call an electrician to fix the outlet.

I have four (4)) Edenpure Gen 4's,each have gotten hot at the cords, the ends have all melted over the years, I have replaced the ends with heavy duty male ends. DON'T USE Strips or multi outlets, as the will start to get brown and then burn.

While attempting to unplug the Edenpure heater because I had smelled something funny, I burned my fingers while touching the cord. Luckily I was home to smell the funny burning smell. I worry that had I not been home a fire might have started. I would like to know if anything is being done about this edenpure problem.

Unit was in off setting as I had to run an errand. it did not apparently turn off, a malfunction occurred. Very scary the unit had a strong burning smell as soon as i walked in the door like a fire. The unit was extremely hot to touch. outlet and cord are fine but unit so hot. Thank god i was only out for a short time. I am now very mistrustful of the eden pure product and reading more about others and their experience realize something is up. please unplug yours if you leave or go to sleep. only use while you are alert. these can be dangerous . I will contact eden pure to see what they say.

I'm shock to see so many others have had the same experience as mine with their edenpure Heater. Mine happened yesterday. Fortunately I was home. I heard a sound like frying bacon then lots of smoke. I turned it off and the smoke got worse. My smoke alarms went off and my cats ran and hid under the bead. I grabbed the cord and pulled it out of the wall socket and threw it outside in my back yard.[Show More]I'm shock to see so many others have had the same experience as mine with their edenpure Heater. I have two Eden Pure heaters. One is the Gen/4. The other one is a Gen3. Both heaters have a 3 prong plug that gets very hot. One melted my surge protector a little. I unplugged it just in time.

Have a Eden Pure 1000 and had it for about seven years and noticed that the plug did get warm when we used it last year. I lowered the temp half way and tonight it melted the outlet, The plug right fork was charred black and the touch on my right hand blistered my hand. I have taken pictures of the plug and outlet.

The plug on our unit melted last night. It also melted the surge protector that it was plugged into. Luckily the breaker tripped and shut it off because we were asleep when this happened. We used the heater all last year with no problems but I was aware that the plug stayed hot, which is what led me to connect it to an outlet plug box that had its own circuit interrupter. Our Eden Pure heater was plugged into was burnt and so was the plug. Thankfully we were home and it did not catch on fire. I have 2 one is now unusable because of the burned plug and I am afraid to use the other as the plug gets very hot on that one too. If there is a class action suit please let me know.

Today when we came home I smelled something hot. The outlet the Eden Pure was plugged into was melted and so was the plug. I am so thankful my home did not catch on fire. If there is a class action suit please let me know also

Using our 3 year old Eden pure for most of this winter in the evenings. Had unit plugged in, but off (not in heating mode) one night last week and heard a pop. The wires were also heated up and had to be replaced as a result of this problem. This Edenpure short circuit did pop my 15 amp breaker. The Edenpure plug obviously melted down and started the fire. Lucky I was home and able to put out the fire quickly, and no one was hurt or killed because of this inherent problem with the Edenpure space heaters. Let me know if a recall or class action suit to get Edenpure to provide a safe product as advertised to be UL Listed in the USA.

Lost my mother in a house fire because of an EdenPure 1000. The plug on the heater would get hot when plugged into a 15amp. circuit. So I used a short, heavy duty extension cord and plugged it into a 20amp. circuit. This solved the problem and the plug would no longer get hot. EdenPure said it was the fault of the extension cord but nowhere on the unit does it say not to use one. It seems like alot of people are having problems from a heater that draws about the same amount of electricity as a hair dryer.

PLUG GETS EXTREMELY HOT! Tried different outlets with the same results.

I have seen bad wire crimps on the internal wiring of many Edenpure heaters overheat to the point of combustion. (common cause of the common complaint that the line cord is too hot to touch) Use these units with caution as they source all components from the lowest bidder they can locate. Also, be prepared to purchase new bulbs for your Edenpure heaters every heating season. (3 bulbs at $35 ea.) [Show More]I have seen bad wire crimps on the internal wiring of many Edenpure heaters overheat to the point of combustion. (common cause of the common complaint that the line cord is too hot to touch) Use these units with caution as they source all components from the lowest bidder they can locate. Also, be prepared to purchase new bulbs for your Edenpure heaters every heating season. (3 bulbs at $35 ea.) While the advertizing copy on the Edenpure US 1000/Gen4 boxes touts a 20,000 hour life for the heater bulbs, I have yet to see a set of bulbs in a US 1000 or Gen4 last more than 400-500 hours of use. Based on what I know about the testing (SCI/Pinnacle did NO component testing at all during product development), I suspect the rated life (20,000 hours) is for operating those heater bulbs in still air with infrequent on/off cycles. Due to a design flaw in the Edenpure heater air flow the bulbs will never last 1000 hours let alone 20,000. The coldest air is blown on the base of the red-hot bulbs and after several heat-up/cool-down cycles in the US 1000/Gen4 heater, the bulb seal fractures and then the bulb gets a small amount of oxygen every time the temperature cycles. This results in the nichrome wire filament oxidizing to the breaking point. (if you happen to see one fail, it is a very spectacular light show. Looks like lightning inside the heater!) At least the quartz tube appears to be thick enough to contain the light show in those last 20 seconds of bulb life. (I've seen the ends blown off of some failed bulbs) You'll know a bulb has failed when you smell burned metal (vaporized nickel-chromium wire). After that happens 3 times (usually all the bulbs will die in the same week) the heater will just blow cool air and it's time for you to shell out another $100+. SCI has apparently determined the bulbs are a consumable item in spite of their advertized claims of a 20,000 hour bulb life. Customers and employees aren't the only ones who get screwed by Suarez Corporation Industries. There is a very good reason SCI has such a large legal team on retainer.

Biotech seems to be covering this up. This was a Model 1000. I would not recommend this heater to anyone!! I have pictures of the melted heater and sent it to saferproducts.gov, but nothing has been resolved. I have started a facebook page called Defective EdenPure Heater to try to locate more people with the same problem.

I lost everything,my house,my personal belongings and almost my life!!! Almost $500,000 in real and personal property and $$$$ in medical bills, etc. I'm so upset with EdenPURE and the whole system!!!! I'm still fighting with the insurance company over the loss, and I have become the victim with no one to pay, except me. I'm worn out paying for attorney help, when it's been way too long with no resolve. Guess the lesson here is...the little guy most, grin and go on,cause there isn't anyone out there to make it better? Maybe I'm just venting; but if you own an EndenPURE heater, you need good smoke detectors or sleep with one eye open!! G

Our EdenPURE heater melted also. We were lucky though, no fire. I purchased three about 3 years ago. The first two died ater a season of use each. The one which melted this year was just out of the box in November. We never set any of the heaters above the comfort zone on the dial. Definitely a bad product. Would love to get my money back.
