Embeda Recall Issued Due to Ongoing Manufacturing Problems

Manufacturing problems have led to the recall of Embeda, a morphine-based painkiller plagued with production problems over the last year.

The Embeda recall was announced this week by Pfizer subsidiary King Pharmaceuticals, after the drug failed to meet stability requirements during testing. The company says that the problem is unlikely to constitute a health risk to patients and there have been no injuries reported in connection to the recalled drug. The recall was announced via a pop-up window on the www.embeda.com website.

The recall affects all dosages of Embeda (morphine sulfate and naltrexone hydrochloride) Extended Release Capsules CII. The company says that patients can continue to take the drug as prescribed, but warn that it will not be available until the manufacturing problem can be resolved. Patients should talk to their health care provider about switching to another opioid medication if necessary.

This is the fourth time in about the last year that there has been a recall for Embeda. The most recent recall was announced by King Pharmaceuticals in a letter sent to customers on November 1, 2010. Again, the drug failed to meet specifications for sustained release of its active ingredient. However, that recall only affected two lots.

Embeda was first approved by the FDA on August 13, 2009. However, King Pharmaceuticals was only allowed to release the drug under a risk evaluation and mitigation strategy (REMS) to prevent abuse and morphine overdose. Even with restrictions, the drug brought in $67 million in revenue in 2010. Pfizer purchased King Pharmaceuticals about two weeks ago.

Customers with questions or who have suffered an adverse event can call the Pfizer Medical Information line at 1-800-776-3637.

This medication was a Godsend for me. I got complete relief without any opioid side effects. As an amputee I deal with phantom limb pain. Once I was put on the right dose I was able to function without pain. I was able to eat again. I lost weight. I haven't felt like this in over 25 years and now I'm told I have to find another medication. I haven't felt like this in over 25 years and now I'm told I have to find another medication. I have been on the long acting meds like Oxicontin, Kadien, Duragesic, and the list goes on. I was so happy to be off the roller coaster ride and now it's starting again. Please tell me when Embeda comes back out.

I am in the same boat as everyone. We added Embeda to help control the pain levels, but I kept having to devour my other Pain meds. We increased the doseage 3 times and were now going to a 60 mg. 713I also put on an additional 40 lbs. I have trouble swollowing and feel like it is coming back up. No pain relief, but feel fatter than I was, Great Meds.

By the way, I've experience alot of memory loss on these meds, Embeda particularly. Forgetfulness. Many other side effects. If they KNOW it's not safe, they why are they putting our health, and lives at risk? I think something needs to be done, instead of putting more of these "miracle" drugs on the market. Maybe takeing those in pain more seriously and honestly try to help them.

I've been on many meds than contain morphine and other drugs, "extended release" that are considered miralcle drugs. I've been in pain management for over4 years and have never gotten any relief. None of the combination drugs helped. When I let my doctor know, he'd just prescribe the next "miracle" drug. I was never given anything for breakthrough pain except maybe tramadol. I even went to a different facility. They said the procedures and the meds were the same as they would do. Why is it they put you on these drugs and expect you to just go along with it? They get you dependent on the narcotics and treat you like drug addicts looking for a high. The other facility acted like I was looking for better or more drugs. I'm tired of it and if nothing is helping I'm going to get my pain management doctor to take me off them all together, they aren't helping. The procedures just create scar tissue around those nerves and joints in my opinion and when I talked to an orthopedic doctor, he wouldn't see me unless I'd had "failed" back surgery. How crazy are these doctors? They have done the studies proving there is reason for your pain, put you on addictive pain meds and then treat you like a dope head. I have other conditions where I take medications and I would love to be off all of them, but can't. Pain drugs I can get off of. Nothing has helped in 4 years, why keep giving them money and wasteing my money for meds that don't work. When I tried to find a family doctor, he thought I just wanted him to give me pain meds. He said "I cannot prescribe this for you". I felt he thought I was after more pain meds. Needless to say, I told him what I thought and found a family doctor with a different, better, opinion of me. Pain doctors feel like gods and treat us like lab rats for new meds. Mine is pushing me to get a spinal stimulator, which I'm sure he gets a kick back from. My neurosurgeon has already told him I can't do it because of a spinal condition. I'm ready to give it up and live with the pain. I'm living with it anyway.

I was told by the young lady at the window that the medication was recalled. Well, this is shocking news on a great many levels. First, why was I not contacted about this? I submitted my script on Monday and was told I could pick it up on Tuesday. I went in today (Wednesday) to pick my order up because I took the last one this morning. I never was notified of any recall either (to everyone saying the same thing) in November and now am learning it has been recalled 4 times previously?!? What are we to these people, just a bunch of lab rats?!? Why didn't the pharmacy call me. Why didn't my doctor call me. Why didn't the company call me? Why doesn't anyone care??? I now do not have medication for tonight or tomorrow morning before my doctor opens up. I am scared to death about what is possibly going to happen tonight. I have been taking this drug for 1.5 years. In the past I have been moved from drug to drug at the whim of the doctor in charge. It appers that chronic pain patients are all thought to be raving drug addicts just looking for a fix. Well, I am a university professor who can assure you that I absolutely HATE taking this junk! I would like nothing more than to not have to be burdened with doctor appointments, trips to the pharmacist, and fighting with insurance companies. I am heavily scrutinized just to get treated for a condition that I never wanted in the first place. I am limited to one doctor and pharmacy in my city. I have to take urine tests every couple of months and then have to pay (my portion) of $240.00 per month just for this one medication. In America you are innocent until proven guilty EXCEPT for those of us who are chronic pain patients. Then, we are thought to be lying and cheating our way to a high. Who else could you do this to? I think my doctor is doing her best. She, however, is very, very concerned with losing her license if the DEA or another branch of government takes an interest in her. I have been on the patches and every drug imaginable in the last 40-years. I have had 4 surgical procedures and numerous hospitalizations. Anyone with brain one can see by my records that this is for real. Why can the government tell my physician how to treat me? It is none of their business. I feel so low about all of this. Alone , frightened, and low. Good luck to everyone out there fighting this awful battle against this silent disease called chronic pain.

A few months ago I finally found a terrific pain specialist. I began with facet joint and epidural shots in addition to pain medication that would help my situation. He started me on Embeda and norco for break through pain. When I had my follow up appointment he asked if the Embeda was making a difference and I began to tell him that it really made no difference but, he just kept saying it was good and would really help me. Due to past experience I didn't want to push the issue because I was tired of being told, by other doctors, I just wanted pain meds, and I have a good doctor now so I figured I'd give it a little more time. After a while I continued taking more than 6 norco a day due to extreme pain and told my doctor all the time but, he had me continue on the Embeda & norco with strict instructions not to take more than 6 a day - not possible. Then I would sweat so bad at night that I'd have to change clothes & sleep on the couch because my bed was soaked through the mattress. During the day it was just as bad. Then I began having black-outs. My husband would wake me up, I wouldn't remember the time of day, what I had done before going to sleep, how long I was out etc. The last time it happened I started out my morning by putting eggs on the stove to make hard boiled eggs & getting the dishes ready to wash. The next thing I know my husband was waking me up, I was in my bed, I had left the eggs on the burner & the exploded all over the kitchen, the pot was still burning and he said I left the front door unlocked. He said it took him 3 or 4 minutes to wake me up and a few more minutes for me to realize where I was & what was going on. Then that night I had chest pains so bad I thought I was going to die! They started again the next morning & I was in the hospital, cardiac unit, over night for monitoring. Scared me & my husband half to death!!!! My pharmacy didn't know this medication was taken off the market. Then I looked it up and found it's been recalled 4 times! It's bad enough I suffered a severe reaction & pain while taking lyrica, know this! I could have burned my house down!!! Then what??? We are not guinea pigs used for the testing of these dangerous medications! Our lives should be taken serious, we are humanbeings not dollar signs. We should not be treated az though we are expendable! None of us chose our conditions that has put us in the position to have to count on Pharmecutical companies and pain specialists to be able to make it through the day with some dignity and relief enough to feel somewhat human and productive. Where are our rights? What if my home would have burned down and I was unable to hear the fire alarms? Who would have taken responsibility then?

Last month I went to the pharmacy i normlly go to and they didnt have it. I knew the pharmacy chain from working there and had the tech check the other stores. it wasnt available at any in that area. I had to go out of my way to get it. I called to MD to see if they realized that his pts would have a hard time finding the drug. Was it recalled? The nurse called me back and send they called the drug rep and was able to find it up at a different pharmact chain. I wasn't told about any recall. FYI Embeda is morphine just has another med in it called Narcan (naloxone) which is used when you for ovedoses. The idea was to prevention people from crushing and snorting the med. Narcan shuts down the morphine. Good idea but I guess it's just not quite right. What i don't like is what is he going to give me instead? i had a gastric by past and certain things don't dissolve. Now what? This crazy world and people miss using meds has made it hard to get treated correctly. They don't believe you because they think you are trying to get more than you need. That has ruined it for the ones that need the Oxycotin. My MD gives you only a 28 day supply not 30 days like some offices. This has made it extremly hard to cancel appts. (He doesnt want you early.) So, I have to plan my schedule around my PM doctor's appts. Not fair.

I complained repeatedly that Embeda doesn't help much with the pain; My hands, feet, & face swell up badly each day, and I have felt more pain in the past year than I did in 3 years while taking Avinza & Fentanyl. Chronic pain patients have no credibility because our laws & an overabundance of lawsuits have doctors fearing for their livelihoods if they prescribe the wrong drug to the wrong patient. It's understandable, but truly harms those of us who really need pain relief. I certainly didn't ASK to be a pain patient, or to be physically attacked, beaten, severely injured & nearly murdered. I didn't ask to have the health conditions I inherited. I just want to LIVE, and not be a burden to my family. Each time a NEW DRUG hits the market, our doctors are told it's the best for their patients. DRUG COMPANY SALES REPS regularly buy lunch for doctors & their entire staff; they send docs & their families on luxury vacations, and do whatever it takes to get docs to write HUNDREDS of prescriptions for their products. AS PATIENTS, WE ARE PUTTING OUR LIVES IN THEIR HANDS, AND YET THEY DO NOT WANT TO HEAR WHAT WE SAY WHEN WE TELL THEM THE DRUGS DO NOT WORK AS THEY SHOULD. Embeda was a great idea, just not very practical or perfected enough to go to market. Not 1 person informed me of any recalls. I found 3 of them myself while researching it's side effects online in 2010. This 4th recall was a surprise today, but not at all unexpected. I assure you I'll never again take another drug put out by King Pharm. A recall is a recall, voluntary or not. They aren't going to give up 67+ millions in earnings if nothing is wrong with the product they rushed to market. Pfizer isn't either, especially 2 weeks after buying KingPharm. We just haven't heard the truth yet, and probably never will. They'll payoff those harmed to keep their mouths shut, then revamp the product & send it to market once again, probably with a new name. 4 recalls in less than 24 months tells ME they've had some major problems, and they don't want to share all of that bad news with the public. It's easier to do a voluntary recall & keep it all hush-hush inside their company walls. I really don't trust them now, after 4 'quiet' recalls.

I didn't see where the Embeda was that good. Just seemed to me like a high cost 'breakthru' drug!! I was given a 60.00 off card and even WITH insurance it still was high! It didn't control my pain level and there were times it felt like I was taking nothing at all. I was given Embeda plus more morphine to take for breakthru. I was switched to the next new med out which is Kadian. Well see how this goes. It too is high cost. Any time release is going to be expensive. I think it's all a money making thing. I'm loosing faith in doctors!!

I have been on Embeda now for about 6 months after being on Fentanyl patches for 2 years. Embeda was a joy to me as I no longer had to worry about patches falling off or certain foods causing medication spikes and my pain was handled even better than before. Now I have to take Avandia because Embeda isn't available and it works ok, but does not go the full 12 hours the way Embeda would for me. Ideally I would rather just be off meds all together.

Thank God I'm not going insane. My pain specialist prescribed Embeda for me about six weeks ago--with my previous pain medication, Norco, to be used only for breakthrough pain. I called the office after about 10 days to tell them that I still had to take six Norco a day, even with the Embeda. She increased the Embeda from 30mg to 40mg every 12 hours. Again, I thought I was going crazy because I didn't feel any difference. She only prescribed enough Norco for four pills a day and I've been terrified of running out. At least now I can go back and try to return to my former dose of Norco. I agree with the others that physicians, even pain specialists, sometimes doubt what the patient is telling them.

Well what do you know some one on PainKillers can be Spot -On. when they complain about the pain they are feeling. I have been suffering for 2 months thinking i was building up a tolerance BUT I.R.s could only help momentarily.Embeda was built up as a Miracle Drug. The good news is now because of the Recall i can get the Medicine i need to survive. Kadian to the Rescue.

My doctor also prescribed Embeda to me last month. I took it for about two weeks and it did not seem to work at all. This was the 100mg dose. I swore I was taking a sugar pill. I sure hope they can figure this out because it would be a great option !

I'm with you... I was on a prefectaly good pain medication when the "new" medication became the fad in my area. Over a 6 month time period I have my medication increased 3 times. It just did not take care of the pain. Plus my next issue it is not cost effective if you have Medicare Pres. coverage, you will reach the doughnut hole about June and have to pay 100% of the drug cost. I have not at this time been told long term side effects and this worries me. They also said they sent a warning letter in Nov 2010 I did not recieve this notice and even spoke with the King pharmacy rep. who said nothing.I do not appreciate this.

I was taking Avinza 90mg twice per day for about 2 years or so when my Dr switched the Medication to Embeda 80mg twice per day about 8 or 9 months ago stating that the Embeda was a safer medication. Every Month Since then I have been telling the Dr. that the Embeda Did Not Seem to work all that well. He didnt seem to believe me. Maybe Now he will, I have an appt. Friday.
