Honda Foreman ATV Recall Issued Due To Steering Shaft Problems

Honda is recalling about 21,000 Foreman All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), following reports of crashes that may have been caused by defective steering shafts.

The Honda Foreman ATV recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on October 29.

According to the American Honda Motor Company, the manufacturer, owners have filed at least 18 reports of the steering shaft breaking. In two of those incidents, the steering problems resulted in a crash. However, no injuries have been reported in association with the ATV recall.

The CPSC has determined that the Foreman ATV steering shaft can break unexpectedly, causing the rider to lose control of the vehicle and crash. The commission says that because of the defective steering shafts the ATVs pose a risk of injury or death to riders.

The recall affects about 21,000 2012 and 2013 model FE and FM Honda FourTrax TRX500 Foreman ATVs. The ATVs have “Honda” on both sides of the fuel tank and “Foreman” on the front cowl below the handlebars and on the left rear fender. They were sold in red, green and camouflage colors. The model numbers are located on the left front down pipe above the driver’s left-hand side front wheel. A complete list of model numbers and associated VIN numbers affected by the recall are listed in the CPSC’s recall notice.

The ATVs were sold for between $6,900 and $7,900 by Honda ATV dealers nationwide from May 2011 through September 2013.

The CPSC recommends that consumers who have the affected ATVs stop using them immediately and contact a Honda ATV dealer to schedule a free repair. Known owners are being contacted by the company directly. Consumers with questions can call American Honda at (866) 784-1870 or visit the company’s website at http://powersports.honda.com and click on Support for product recall information.
