La Nuestra Mamey Ice Cream Recall Issued Due to Risk of Typhoid Fever

The possibility of typhoid fever contamination has led to a recall of La Nuestra brand frozen mamey ice cream and other mamey pulp products.

The La Nuestra mamey ice cream recall was announced on October 6 by the FDA. While no illnesses have been reported in connection to the ice cream, at least nine people have fallen ill with typhoid fever in California and Nevada after reportedly consuming contaminated frozen mamey pulp.

The recall affects all La Nuestra brand Mamey Ice Cream distributed in Nevada and California. The recalled ice cream was sold in one pint containers and 1.5 gallon plastic pails. The pint-sized containers have an UPC code of 7-56869-17610-2 and the 1.5 gallon pails have an UPC code of 7-56869-17599-0. All lots are affected by the recall.

The FDA first issued a nationwide recall in August of all Mamey fruit pulp products sold under either Montalvan Sales Inc.’s La Nuestra label or sold by Goya Foods Inc. The mamey fruit pulp recall came after an investigation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found an epidemiological link between frozen mamey pulp products and the typhoid fever cases in California and Nevada.
