Lawsuit Filed After Mirena IUD Misplaced and Surgically Removed

A Florida woman has filed a product liability lawsuit after experiencing problems with her Mirena intrauterine device (IUD), alleging that the implantable birth control became misplaced after migrating within her body and punching a hole in her uterus, resulting in the need for surgery to remove the device.

The complaint was filed last month by Betsy Landers in New Jersey Superior Court in Morris County, according to a press release issued by the woman’s lawyers.

Landers indicates that she was implanted with a Mirena IUD birth control in 2008, and began experiencing pelvic pain in July 2010. Doctors were unable to locate the strings of the IUD, which are supposed to provide an easy method of removal.

After an attempt to locate the Mirena via ultrasound also failed, Landers ultimately had to undergo laparoscopic surgery to remove the IUD birth control in December 2010. It was discovered that the Mirena IUD punctured her uterus, resulting in severe pain and permanent complications.

Growing Number of Mirena IUD Lawsuits Filed Raising Similar Allegations

The Mirena is a t-shaped birth control device that was first introduced by Bayer in 2000, and was promoted as a hassle-free form of birth control.

The birth control is implanted into the uterus, and is designed to remain in place for up to five years to prevent pregnancy by keeping the sperm from the egg. Mirena IUDs also releases levonorgestrel, a progestin that is designed ot keep a woman’s ovaries from releasing eggs for fertilization.

Although the birth control has been aggressively promoted by Bayer has a safe and hassel free way to keep women from worrying about missing a dose of their birth control pill, a growing number of women have reported suffering debilitating injuries from side effects of Mirena after the IUD after the device migrated following placement.

Many women discover the problems after developing pain and discovering that the Mirena IUD is misplaced in their body, which may be due to the device poking a hole in the uterus and migrating. This may cause perforations to other organs, infections, abscesses and other complications.

Landers joins a growing number of women who have filed a lawsuit after an Mirena IUD injury, with most of the current complaints also pending in New Jersey state court, which is where Bayer is headquartered in the United States.

In August, Bayer filed a petition with the New Jersey Supreme Court, asking for the centralization of all Mirena lawsuits in the state. At that time, at least 16 complaints had been filed in New Jersey state court, but the drug maker indicated that they expect the number of lawsuits to increase dramatically as product liability lawyers advertising for Mirena IUD cases continue to file new claims.

I had a Mirena IUD inserted on May 19, 2022. After insertion I had constant sharp cramping in my lower belly. After 6 weeks I went to follow up. I had multiples ultrasounds on that day (July 1), however they could not locate it. The doctor send me to do an X-ray the same day. They found the IUD in the stomach. Now I need a surgery to remove the Morena IUD. Please let me know what we can do.

So I did the smart thing and jumped onto another birth control method the Depo shot. I started getting really sick a month here and there. Then it started to pick up where I would have an entire day of diarrhea and end it with severe vomiting. I didnt always have bad cramps but past couple times they have been so severe im holding onto the bathtub in pain and I had no idea what is going on. I went and seen my doctor who sent me to a Gastroenterologist, I had a colonoscopy done and the test results were normal. So i got off the Depo thinking it was that. Then I noticed a strange pattern. I would get extremely tired for about a week, then I would get violently ill vomiting and diarrhea then like clock work within a day or two of that outburst I would start my period. So I went back to the doctors and had a Upper GI test done, tests were normal. BUT around this time to I had stop taking my birth control pill that i got on after the shot just because life had been to busy for things and i was sick all the time and was just losing hope at this point. I had my period BUT didn't get sick. Odd? I then had a CT Scan done just go the results today and found out the tests were normal but it showed that my IUD was misplaced. What!!! I had that done in 2012 and here I am just now finding out in 2015 that it has been misplaced. It has been at least 2 years since I was told it was even MISSING by my doctor. So needless to say I am scheduling an appointment with my OBGYN immediatly. I have no idea what to think at this point. I'm glad someone found it, I'm glad the doctor I ended up with that day decided hed run every test possible just to rule stuff out I owe a lot to him. I am pushing 30 and wanted another child before I stopped having children altogether and had I not known about this who knows if I would ever have one! So I was on depo and then on the pill at the same time as my IUD because apparently my OBGYN couldnt see it on the sonogram. So anxious to see this turn of events.........

I had the IUD placed for the use of birth control in Aug 2008, so I could not have children for a while. About four weeks after placement I begun to have many complications. I continually had severe abdominal pain. I went to the same doctor in which he said that the IUD was not in my cervix and then continued to order an ultrasound of my abdomen to make sure it was not in my cervix. They did not see it in there. But did say that I concurred pelvic inflammatory disease(PID) from having the IUD. They prescribed me medication and placed me on the depo prevera so I could continue to have birth control. But even though I finished all antibiotics for the infection I continued to have abdominal pain. In which I was seen several times for. After that they begun to tell me that I was having pain due to the depo shot I was on. But the pain never got better, it seems as though it gradually got worse and even though I seen the doctor many times they would tell me they could not find anything wrong except for the fact that the depo can cause the issues I was having. I have been very depressed, crying for no reason, back pain, pelvic pain, abdominal pain, really bad headaches, irritability, angry, and just plain not myself. So I then decided that the pain was not worth being on birth control so I then decided to get a tubal ligation so I could stop having all the problems I was having. So in Dec. 2010 I got the surgery done which was a permanent form of birth control but I couldn’t help to think that I could finally live my life without the pain I was having. But guess what, I was wrong. The pain begun to get worse and worse. On July 20, 2011 I went to my doctor with sever abdomen pain with sever back pain, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, and unable to eat or drink causing dehydration. The doctor that thought I may have something wrong with my appendix, so she sent me to the emergency room to get blood work, IV fluids, and a CT scan to find out what was wrong. So after seven in a half hours of sitting in the emergency room waiting to find out what was wrong and why I was in so much pain I get told something completely unexpected. I have an IUD jammed in my intestine and there is nothing they can do until I got see my OD GYN. So I got home stress all night about what was going to happen next. I go see the OBGYN the next morning for him to tell me that I have to have surgery to remove the IUD immediately. WOW!!!! Now I have many questions in the back of my head the first of which is, “WHY ME”! Why did they not try to find this 3 years ago when the pain first began. All the times I went and seen the doctor why did he not look into it more? Why did they not see it when they did my tubal ligation in December? Why didn’t they do a CT scan or X-Ray in the first place to make completely sure? Now I have to go in have the surgery and miss work that I cannot afford to miss. Plus be in this sever pain because they couldn’t be more couscous. This is not fair to me and I think that this was an issue of negligence on their part. If they would have taken the time out to actually look into my pain in the first place would I be going through this now? Now I got my tubal ligation done and will never have children due to you misleading my thoughts. I knew there was something wrong and you kept making me feel that I was wrong. That there was nothing wrong with me. My life has been miserable due to your un willingness to say that patient comes first. Due all possible to make sure they are comfortable. ” I WAS NOT COMFOTABLE” I was in constant pain and you made me feel like I was crazy. I now know I was not and it will be fixed. But it is not fair for me to have to go through this. You should make more time for your patients and make them feel like you care. Or how about this why don’t you try to ACTUALLY CARE. Thank you for listening to my story and the questions that I wish could be answered and even the things I would love to say to them.

I have had my IUD in for just 5 years now. Went this past week on 2/6/14 to have it removed in the office. I am so upset and can't believe I have to go to the operating room, be put out under anesthesia and have this removed. I chose this type of birth control because it was suppose to be an easy method and be replaced easily. I am scared and not sure what to expect after they remove it. Scared that I am going to be in pain and not sure if I want another one put in. Don't want to go through this again in 5 years. I think that this company needs to do some more research on these. Its not fair that we have to pay for the IUD and then a visit to have it removed and then surgery, never mind the pain and possible damage done due to this device

I got my mirena put in after my son was born for painful periods. I was told that there would be minor issues but nothing big. I went in about 2 days ago for continues infections and found out that it had moved. The string decided to move into my uterus. Next Thursday I have to get it surgically moved. I will never get one of these again.
