Maytag Recall: 1.7 Million Dishwashers May Pose Fire Hazard

About 1.7 million Maytag dishwashers, sold under a variety of labels, have been recalled after reports that they can overheat and burst into flames.

The Maytag dishwasher recall was announced on June 3, by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) after Maytag received 12 reports that the heating elements in the dishwashers failed, causing fires and dishwasher damage. In one report a kitchen suffered extensive fire damage.

The defect appears to be an electrical failure in the dishwasher’s heating element. Although there have been no injuries reported in connection to the defective Maytag dishwashers, the CPSC warns that the defect can pose a serious fire hazard.

The recalled dishwashers were sold under a number of labels, including Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa and Crosley. The brand name is printed on the front of the dishwashers, which were manufactured with black, bisque, white and stainless steel front panels.

The model and serial numbers are located on a label on the inside of the plastic tub, near the left side of the door opening. The recall affects all Maytag dishwashers starting with the serial numbers NW39, NW40, NW41, NW42, NW43, NW44, NW45, NW46, NW47, NW48, NW49, NW50, NW51, NW52, NY01, NY02, NY03, NY04, NY05, NY06, NY07, NY08, NY09, NY10, NY11, NY12, NY13, NY14, NY15, NY16, NY17, NY18, and NY19; or ending with the serial numbers JC, JE, JG, JJ, JL, JN, JP, JR, JT, JV, JX, LA, LC, LE, LG, LJ, LL, LN, LP, LR, LT, LV, LX, NA, NC, NE, NG, NJ, NL, NN, NP, or NR.

The dishwashers were sold nationwide at department stores, appliance stores and by homebuilders for between $250 and $900 from February 2006 through April 2010.

The CPSC recommends that consumers immediately stop using the dishwashers, and disconnect them by shutting off the fuse or the circuit breaker, as opposed to simply unplugging the dishwashers. They should then contact Maytag at (800)544-5513 to ensure that the dishwasher is affected by the recall. Maytag is offering free in-home repair or rebates toward the purchase of new Maytag dishwashers.

They fixed it within another year the door went bad again, my wife went on line and saw the recall and they said it did not fall under the recall. So we started to get prices to fix then about a month later we went on line again and it did fall under it. When the guy came out, after they rescheduled, he said the door did not fal under the recall or warranty only the heating brackets. Then they said well parts fall uder the warranty but not labor and the labor was more than the part, which was easy to install. So I said well just send me the part I'll install it. They said well if you install it, it's not covered. I will never buy another Maytag appliance or appliances built by the company making Maytag or owns them again. I can not believe they wanted me to pay half the price of a new dishwasher to have a part installed that had gone bad within one year the last two times installed.
