Ryobi Battery Pack Recall Issued After Overheating Reports

About 56,400 Ryobi rechargeable battery packs have been recalled due to reports that suggest they may overheat and possibly burst while on the charger, posing a risk of fires and a potential burn hazard for consumers.

A Lithium 18V 4Ah Battery Pack recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on February 26, after One World Technologies received at least four reports of the battery packs overheating and causing minor damage to property. To date, no injuries to consumers have been reported.

The recall consists of Ryobi Lithium 18 volt 4Ah battery packs with the model number P108 and part number 130429028, which can be located on the data plate beneath the pack. The packs were sold in green, black and silver with the lettering “Ryobi” and “Lithium+18V” written in white on both sides of the base.

Roughly 54,200 recalled Ryobi battery packs were sold in the United States and 2,200 in Canada.

The battery packs were manufactured in China by Techtronic Industries Co. Ltd. and imported by One World Technologies, Inc., of Anderson South Carolina. The battery packs were sold at Home Depot stores and online at www.Homedepot.com and other retailers from September 2012 to December 2012 for about $99.

The same manufacturer was linked to a Homelite and Expert Gardener Electric Blower Vacuums recall that affected 385,000 units sold at Walmart and Home Depot. The blowers were recalled because objects sucked into their vacuum could shoot through the collection bag and potentially injure the user or bystanders.

The CPSC is advising consumers to stop using the battery packs immediately and to remove the battery from the charger to prevent possible overheating. Consumers should contact One World Technologies at (800) 597-9624 or visit them online at www.ryobitools.com for instructions to return and repair the battery packs free of charge.

Within 5 mins our house, boat and my SUV which was in the driveway were totally gone. The garage was absolutely totally gone. ATF, CSI, and Fire Marshall, etc came and dug out those Ryobi battery cells. Another fire investigator came from our insurance company came and said they are after Ryobi but it has been so very hard because there is nothing left after the fire. When we left the house there was zero smoke and fire alarms were not going off…still all in garage…5 mins is all it took for everything to be gone. So hot and so fast. So much explosions. So mad.

August 2023, multiple Ryobi Lithium batteries (not plugged in) caught fire in my house causing major fire damage to my residence. What is going on with these issues? Is anyone addressing this with Ryobi? I have over 150k in damages to my residence. This is absolutely ridiculous.

I'm literally in shock. My mobile home caught on fire because of a Ryobi battery charger that had been unplugged for several months. Thank God none of us was hurt but how can this be. I am so angry.

It created intense heat as objects near it started to melt. The wall is charred. My nephew threw it outside where it continued to explode. Days later and I’m still trying to get rid of the awful smoke odours. If I wasn’t at home, the house would have caught fire and burned to the ground. I always heard Ryobi made poor products, and now I’ve experienced it.

Had not used it in just over a year. it was stored properly and NOT Charging. I Woke up to a real and real scary Fire!!! I inhaled a huge bursts of lithium Ion smoke, and house material smoke. I say the lithium ion smoke because there is an unmistakable taste and smell from electrical fire and then even more so from electrical lithium fire. I am an electrician by trade and attended a couple years of school for it as well. How i know electrical burnt smell. But lithium ion smell is new to me and is super sharp discussing stink and if you inhale it you'll taste that smell for days. I have no clue what the future holds for my lungs. I need to get to the doctor and figure out the damage and why I now have weird wheezing and weird cramps. In addition my hotrod I have spent years on was wrecked from heat and smoke. Anyone who owns their home should ask their agent if their cars covered in the garage from a fire. I have the same insurance company for both home and auto and neither division would cover my car because it requires a special policy. What a disappointment. On top off the stress, the scared to death crazy experience, the remediation and repairs... my home owners insurance rate went up tremendously. I need a lawyer i think. This is just too much. Store you lithium ion batteries away from your garage and home people. In a tuff shed far enough away from structures they wont catch fire. Be safe out there.

My 40 V corded Ryobi trimmer caught on fire. After contacting the company about the incident I was hung up on and they were very difficult to deal with. Almost like they’re hiding something.

The 18 volt 4 a/h Ryobi batteries #130429075 overheated in the charger and melted the plastic around the contacts. Ryobi should have recalled them. I have over 25 tools that use this type battery and love the tools. I turned in two batteries in the first recall (130429028). I really thought they would recall these too.

I have a Ryobi18v lithium battery - one of a twin pack that melted in the charger. It's also a P108 #130429075. It was 3.5 yrs old. There was no visual clues of why it did this. Past the warranty but I won't be bringing anymore Ryobi in my home or property! They've recalled their batteries in the past. Beware!

  • RobertNovember 2, 2017 at 4:54 pm

I currently have 4 batteries P108 that are melted. Specifically the positive+ terminals are melted. When used with drill and driver they were great. When used with grinder or circular saw they became so hot that they melted themselves inside of tool. I would appreciate Ryobi stepping up as I have invested in a lot of their products as well as recommended Ryobi to many others.

Same deal 75 battery not on the recall list I melted The terminals on 2 batteries in my foreign half inch angle grinder using cut wheels cutting sheet metal But apparently they won't exchange them

Multiple 4 AH Lithium Ion 18 volt batteries melted at connectors when used with Ryobi angle grinders; both the blue; and yellow. Thermal protection?...Yeah, right! Brushes and internal wiring damaged also. Using flap wheels, 4 1/2 inch on steel. Expensive; disappointment. Replaced brushes and contacts with OE parts; keeps failing. Among the best disposable tools out there. Stinky smoke.

Battery P108 4Ah overheated and melted one contact on the battery and melted one contact in my string trimmer today 5/31/16.my melted P2006 string trimmer does not work with another battery--one trimmer toasted,The battery P/N IS 130429075,and is not the battery pn on the recall list .

  • WazJanuary 20, 2016 at 2:23 am

There well could be a problem in Australia also. My battery charger for some reason, decided to give the ghost after 20 only months of hardly any work and attempting to catch fire at my work station. luckily I was there at the time and noticed a rancid smell of its guts being cooked. It was very hot to touch, but luckily, the battery was still okay.

  • MikeJuly 30, 2015 at 9:16 pm

How about a recall on the 48 volt Ryobi lawnmower batteries and charger. In 3 years I've had two batteries nearly explode in my garage! #3 batteries is not going to happen....so much for my foray into "green" lawn tools.
