Walmart Sandwich Recall Issued Due to Listeria Tainted Deli Meat

About 380,000 pounds of deli meat used in Walmart “Grab and Go” sandwiches has been recalled due to the risk of listeria contamination.

The Walmart deli sandwich recall was announced on Monday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) after a sample of meats used by Walmart tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The meat was processed by Zemco Industries, a Buffalo, New York-based unit of Tyson Foods. The meat was then made into delicatessen sandwiches and sold under the Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches label at Wal-Mart.

• 28.49-pound cases of “Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches Hot Ham, Hard Salami, Pepperoni, Sandwich Peppers” with the number 17803 1300.
• 32.67-pound cases of “Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches Virginia Brand Ham With Natural Juices, Made in New York, Fully Cooked Bacon, Sandwich Pickles, Sandwich Peppers” with the number 17804 1300.
• 25.5-pound cases of “Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches Angus Roast Beef Coated with Caramel Color” with the number 17805 1300.

All of the packages have a vendor number of 398412808 and an establishment number of 5222. They have “use by” dates of August 20 to September 10, 2010, and were produced between June 18 and July 2.

There have been no reported cases of food poisoning in connection to the Walmart sandwich recall.

Blood tests are usually required to diagnose Listeriosis, which can be treated with antibiotics. Symptoms of Listeriosis include muscle aches, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, severe headaches and fever. If the bacteria spreads from the intestines to the bloodstream and nervous system, it could cause meningitis and other complications.

The recall notice did not contain instructions for consumers on returning the sandwiches. Any consumers with questions can call Zemco Industries at (479)290-4714.

A couple weeks ago my husband ate one of those market side deli sandwiches and within 20 minutes or so he was really sick. He was the only one who ate it and the only one that got sick. He was never examined and did get better but its still scary. I feed my kids those sandwiches when we do movie nights. Now I will certainly think twice about it.

I am currently sick from a pizza purchased at Wal-Mart, “Marketside – 12″ Supreme”, on August 24, 2010. It contained Pepperoni, Italian sausage, and garden vegetables. I normally do not shop at this Wal-Mart, their Pizza was not frozen, it was located in a stair-step refrigeration area at the very back of the store. The Vegetarian Pizza that I normally buy, at my local Port Orange Wal-Mart in a frozen state in a freezer cooler, was Sold Out. I selected the above product, hoping I would be okay with the Pepperoni, as I never eat it. I prefer the vegetarian as it is really good, has no MSG, and a really good cornmeal crust. It was after 8 PM and I wanted to get home, bake it, and relax. So I selected it, figuring I would enjoy it, because it was in the same style box as the one I normally purchase.
