Chantix Suicide Lawsuits Mount Against Pfizer

Three new Chantix lawsuits were filed last week in New York state court against Pfizer, Inc., the manufacturer of the popular smoking cessation drug. The cases were filed on behalf of individuals who claim that side effects of Chantix caused users to commit or attempt suicide, adding to the mounting number of similar suits filed against the drug maker in both state and federal courts.

Chantix (varenicline) was approved by the FDA in 2006 as a prescription treatment to help people quit smoking. The drug works by blocking receptors in the brain that are commonly stimulated by nicotine, reducing the positive feelings that come from cigarettes. However, shortly after Chantix was introduced, adverse event reports linked the drug to an increased risk of severe psychological side effects, such as depression, suicidal thoughts and other abnormal behavior.

The first known Chantix suicide lawsuit was filed in July 2008 in federal court in Indiana, by the widow of a man with no history of mental illness who committed suicide a few months after stating the medication. Since that time dozens of other cases have been filed in other courts throughout the country.

In October 2009, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation consolidated all federal lawsuits over Chantix in the Northern District of Alabama. At that time, there were 34 different Chantix suits pending in 16 different federal district courts. Since then, another 14 complaints have been transferred into the MDL, or multidistrict litigation, as tag-along actions.

The two recent New York state court Chantix lawsuit complaints were filed last week in the Supreme Court in Manhattan. They were brought on behalf of two plaintiffs who allegedly attempted suicide and one woman who killed herself while using the drug. According to the complaints, Pfizer intentionally, recklessly and negligently concealed or misrepresented the Chantix health risks.

Similar allegations are seen throughout all of the suicide lawsuits over Chantix, claiming that Pfizer failed to adequately research their medication or adequately warn doctors and patients about the potential psychological Chantix effects.

During clinical trials performed before the drug was introduced, individuals with a psychiatric history or current psychiatric symptoms were excluded from the studies. As a result, Chantix problems were not evaluated among people with common conditions like depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and insufficient warnings were placed on the drug.

Pfizer has defended its popular smoking cessation drug, saying that they intend to vigorously defend against the lawsuits. In a statement released last week, Pfizer officials said that they have clearly communicated the risks of Chantix side effects.

Last year, the FDA required that a new Chantix black box warning be placed prominently on the label to warn users about the potentially life-threatening side effects, which is the strongest warning that can be placed on a prescription medication.

His doctor prescribed Chantix after we discussed potential side effects in detail, and we both agreed that if my husband exhibited any of the behaviors or symptoms listed in the drug information sheet, he would stoptaking Chantix immediately. After about two weeks, he quit smoking, but started exhibiting rages and verbal abuse towards me. I told him he had to quit taking Chantix immediately, which he did. But he started smoking again without the pills, and I did not know that he restarted the pills - he told me he had flushed them! I had spine surgery on Fri. July 6th, he stayed with me all day and into the evening at my bedside and was very sweet and loving. Even said a prayer for me before he left. The next day however he texted me and he was very hateful and raging angry. He said things like "you've ruined my life because you lied to me about everything you've ever told me since I met you" and "You don't live here anymore, you left me, I'm burning all of your things tomorrow". Sunday I was discharged and I had to go my mom's to live, since I was afraid to go home. I was trying to think of a way to get him into a mental hospital for help, but Monday night he sent me several horrendously vicious texts yet refused to answer my phone calls or respond to my texts. Just after midnight, he shot himself. I had never seen him so angry, so hateful towards me. I could always talk him down when he became angry, but he was never so mean or abusive towards me. I believe the Chantix was the cause of his raging and suicide.

Either way the kids don't have anything to do with your anger today so don't take it out on them. We are a family and you segregated us today. You are pushing me further away from my love for you. I don't want to live like this". Please take my advice. When you are ready to quit smoking you will be able to do so without medication. I have had suicidal thoughts and am not thinking about consequences. I am trying to come off the medication. They say it takes two weeks to get it out of your system. I thought since I am a nurse this would somehow not affect me like the warnings of the side effects say. It did!

The doctors’ state that I will more than likely have them for the rest of my life and that Chantix is probably the cause. I have lost my job because of seizures. I have been ordered by physicians not to drive and my husband can't leave me by myself. The seizures have seriously affected my life to where I can’t function normally or without assistance. Since my last hospital stay, I believe that I have also had a stroke after a major seizure. I am on my third medication, which doesn’t seem to help control the seizures; I feel that it is killing me more and more every day. Yesterday alone, I had 6 seizures, five of them being back to back. Please respond if anyone has experience seizures and or strokes due to Chantix.

Until I saw something on the news about Chantix having several FDA issues mounting, I didn't even KNOW or associate what happened to me TO the time I took Chantix - so much was going on at the time and I was soo confused (I still am rather confused about much of what happened within the months I took Chantix and for about a year after) that I never even made the possible connection until now. When I was a teen I was diagnosed with an impulse control disorder - a girl's version of ADD at the time. I had been managing for years without issues; I had a mild history of drug addiction (later considered to be self medicating for undiagnosed ADD) but I had been clean for over 11 years without a problem and was managing my life, my business and my finances VERY well. Never a bounced check, some financial poor decisions typical for someone self taught about finances but NOTHING to write home about. I was on Chantix for 3 months - nausea, bad dreams, depression, all the typical symptoms - I finally gave up Chantix because of the side effects and I still smoke - I have been smoking since age 7. During the time I was on it I began having very 'unreal' episodes. Writing checks on our bank account that I could have SWORE had enough in it. Compulsive aggressive behavior. Ridiculous gambling bouts when I had never been a heavy gambler in my life. Episodes where I would black out and not even know or recall anything I did for DAYS. Thinking this was related to childhood trauma (I have since been diagnosed as ADD/ADHD with possible Bi-polar disorder) I have been treating this as PTSD and ADD since, as have my doctors. But some extremely abnormal behavior marked that whole period and for about 9 months to a year afterwards. It drove us into bankruptcy, caused MUCH stress in my life and our lives (mine and my husband's) have not recovered. I still am unable to truly focus on anything (when before I could multi-task like no one else), I am unable to handle finances (when before I could juggle 30 accounts without blinking an eye) and I still go through suicidal bouts of depression. PLEASE - do NOT take this if you were ever diagnosed with ANY type of disorder as a child!!!

I did not take Chantix w/hopes of suffering horrific side effects and enjoy an early retirement on Pfizer. No, that was not my goal. I was a closet smoker 2 - 4 per day, and as a grandma of 6, it was past time. Feel like such a hoosier. I remember feeling exhausted...ALL the time. All I wanted to do was take a soft blanky into a closet and shut the world out. I had very vivid dreams of deceased loved ones coming to my room at nite...begging me to go w/them...bragging how AWESOME & FUN heaven is....they were so happy/healthy...! Tried to convince me my job was done here. My kids were grown and were busy raising their OWN children, my husband of 37 years could MOST CERTAINLY replace me...and my job which I've loved for the past 23 years would have NO PROBLEM replacing me...why not just let it all go...and just fade away...? After months of this I decided they were right! Why was I still here just taking up space?! Wasn't sad, mad, glad....just TIRED...tired of living...staying almost seemed funny/silly, even!! Jan. '08 - - taken by ambulance in middle of nite w/excruciating chest pain, extreme shortness of breath, stomach spasms so strong they felt like contractions, fever, and a mind-blowing headache. Discharged a week later - - diagnosis - possible virus. May '08 - - had great day at work as usual...daughter called when I got home, said, "mom, people are worried about you. you haven't been yourself for so long...what's wrong?" Laughed, picked up keys, took long drive to rural area, picked up 3 bottles of sleeping pills and razors...found closed used car parking lot...wrote short note, "it's been real..." woke up six days later surrounded by devastated family members...when being taken off ventilator. What the...??? Spent the next 2 1/2 years in intense therapy inpatient/out...spent time in psyche unit, lost babysitting privileges with my beautiful grandchildren...took leave from work....felt lost, ostracized, stigmatized, ashamed...and while I was busy beating myself up, my mom who was the only person who knew I took Chantix, began feeding me articles she was finding about the negative side effects...at first I thought, "nice try, mom..." but I started researching on my own..." OMG....omg....could this POSSIBLY have NOT been my fault??!! Could a drug really be so potent that it had the power to distort my mind??? But, it was FDA approved! Right?...please don't tell me a company could be so cold and so greedy...that they would KNOWINGLY put something so dangerous...out there for public consumption??!!! THAT my friend, is why Pfizer is being looked at.

Bottom line, Chantix does have side effects and claiming not to know them isn't good enough. Read the insert, the one the pharmacist tells you to read. Also, why is the fact that nicotein withdrawl can and does cause the same side effects but that doesn't pay in a lawsuit so blame chantix.

I used it for a month to quit smoking, and immediately showed signs of anxiety, anger, risky behavior, and depression. My primary care physician was not aware of possible side effects, and I had never been diagnosed with depression or any other emotional problems. At first it was strange, vivid dreams. Then, I quit sleeping at night. It got to the point that I would drink several shots of liquor to fall asleep. I was getting increasingly agitated at work, at home, and kept telling my husband of 25 years that there was something wrong with me. I went back to my doctor and he prescribed an anti-depressant, because he thought the sleep problems were due to depression. That was like throwing gas on a fire! I became combative, nasty, cussed out my boss at work, then quit, and started hunting for sexual relationships. It all culminated 3 months later, when I started cutting myself, and thought it would be fun to try to slit my wrists. My husband took me to the hospital and had me admitted for suicide watch, and while there I continued cutting myself and was on so many anti-psychotic meds that I don't have much memory about the event. Three years later, I have been reduced from 13 different meds to 7 just to function, and have had to take a Leave of Absence from my job because now I'm wrestling with memory loss- My mind has been RUINED by this drug, and while it may not affect everyone adversely, it has killed or maimed enough to have it pulled off the market!! If anyone knows of another victim who is suffering from memory loss issues sine quitting this medication, I'd love to compare notes. At present it looks like I will be disabled for the rest of my life- and for what?? Because I believed in the DEA and Pfizer when they told me this drug was SAFE to use??

I'm for regulating and suing for all of these weird side effects but for this particular drug - I think it is implied that it makes major brain changes (as it would have to if it hoped to help the insanity that is addiction) so I am with pfizer on this one. Besides you can't entirely rule out coincidence either. Just because a man watches rambo and 4 weeks later goes apeshit on a town doesn't mean its time to sue stallone and his flunkies. I think people just say oh they were taking this and then offed themselves (be it motivated in hopes of $ (low low low) or denial that a loved one could be unhappy enough to off themselves - the best resassurance of not my fault via inaction,no empathy, etc is to assign blame elsewhere) Besides a few years of lab research/guinea pigging about will never provide a guarantee of something as complex as neuro chemistry and all the possibilites it could have. You must take and accept the risks when you take these medications or try/die dealing with the problem you are taking them for

I do now have Diabetes, and I wonder if it had to do with the Chantix. Diabetes does not run in my family at all. I am very surprised that I have Diabetes now. My side effects were as follows: gas, headache, angry behavior changes, selfishness, ear ringing, equilibrium imbalance. I never felt suicidal though. After taking Chantix for 2 months, I experienced an episode where I felt like I was going to die. I wanted to go jump off a bridge, but I did not want to die and I was not going to kill myself; however, my head hurt so bad that I had to lay down. But when I laid down, I had to get up. I even called Pfizer 1-800 number and told them of my side effects and asked what I should do. No one answered the telephone, and no one ever called me back. Thank God. Thank God, that the headaches went away. That was the scariest episode I experienced. Other side effect I had and still have vivid dreams that I always remember. I am not one to remember dreams, but now I remember all my dreams. I am just blessed that my dreams were good ones while I was on Chantix. But, in my suport group at work, many people were experience horrible nightmares, and as a result, the quit Chantix. I always had pleasurable dreams. Now, it has been a year and a half since I quit smoking and taking Chantix. Strangely, I have been having bad dreams that I have dreamt before at some point in my life. Is it the Chantix from a year ago?

I was feeling depressed, extremely irratible, and could not sleep. After discontinuing use of Chantix, I started experiencing severe sleep problems. I finally went to see a doctor after I simply could not handle it anymore and was diagnosed as having severe anxieties. I would get to sleep and then wake up after a few hours and my mind would be racing and I would be unable to get back to sleep. I have a brother who experienced very similar problems after stopping the medication. Recently I was speaking to a co-worker and I could tell he was extremely tired. We started talking and he expressed to me how bad his sleep problems were. After sharing with him my experience and discovering we both had taken Chantix, I began to make the coorlation. Myself, my brother, and my co-worker do not have any history of mental illness but have all experienced the same "anxities" and serious sleep problems after discontinuing Chantix.

Since it is now over 3 years, I wonder if I will EVER have the man I love so much back to his normal self....or is this the "new normal"? I'm DISGUSTED with our FDA....WHAT A PATHETIC JOKE THEY ARE!! They won't approve homeopathic means because they won't make money from that. But they've approved the Chantix even after all these horrible casualties! That's really been the only problem I have had. I guess any med an act different in different people. Chantix has been great for me.

I felt very angry, felt like I could hurt somone or myself etc. I felt like I was losing my mind. Infact, in the course of taking Chantix, it only made my bipolar and anxiety off the hook. And before Chantix, my mental issues were stable. Some miracle drug. They found this med that would help smokers and put it on the market, without knowing the full awful side effects. Called big money to make. I would not recommend giving Chantix to a lab rat. I flushed my Chantix down the toilet where it belonged.

In the middle of the night my husband violently attacked me. He was arrested and has filed for divorce. I didn't know he was taking the Chantix until about a week later when the pharmacy sent a notice to our home stating he was due for a refill. It would have been nice to know if a household member was taking a medication that put everyone's life at risk. It has ruined our lives.

I took Chantix a few years ago. Never did totally quit, and I was on it for almost a year. I am back to smoking, but I am so miserable and cranky, and depressed a lot. And while I'm not suicidal or anything, I do get very depressed. I used to thrive on meeting deadlines at work, but now I dread it and bitch about it. And while I enjoy my beer, I'm drinking way more than I ever did. I don't know what it is. Ever since Chantix (and I've been off it for over a year), I'm just not right.

As foolish as it sounds, a smoker should plan on a period of actual mourning in order to get through the early withdrawal depression.

Made me depressed, a full range of emotions would wake up sometimes sweating with some really horrible nightmares that i never have i did stop taking it and and over some time things got back to normal for me

If you have mental problems or tend to look at the glass half empty then you probably should not take this drug. I have had nothing besides a little nausea in the late after noon and some in-depth dreams. Made it so easy to quite.

It led me to quit a job because of a disagreement I had, which under normal conditions I would have worked through or made sure I had another job first!. I began to endure unbelievable outbursts of rage...to inanimate objects no less...very uncharacteristic for me. I began to have suicidal thoughts within the first week, I stopped taking the drug after a month. I will admit, it did help curb my appetite for cigarettes, but I traded my will to live for a nominal reduction in my desire to smoke. Not a good trade. I threw my career (of 20 years) and most of my personal possessions away.I am not the same person anymore, my entire family and social group is stunned at the changes in me. I no longer have any desire to improve my health at all, and in fact I still have thoughts of suicide daily. I am glad the drug worked for others, but I consider it the worst decision I have made in my life. I am a smart man and it's hard to believe that a month long exposure to a drug could have effects lasting that long, but I can't explain it with anything else.

Finally I admitted myself into the hospital and they ran tests. Still nothing was found wrong. I was having a bowel movement anywhere from 6 to 18 times a day, I was miserable, they finally had me get a colonoscopy and they found ulcerative colitius. My whole lining of my colon was covered in ulcers. They put me on a medication that costs 605$ per month (which made me better) stomach wise that is. I then started getting ulcers in my mouth and throat. And the only meds that would cure it could cause ulcerative colitius. ughhhhh. Although my stomach is under control, the doctor said that it would lay dormit in my system and come back every so often. So I am stuck with this condition now for the rest of my life due to Chantix. I will say this though, I haven't smoked for 3 months now and I only took the meds for 10 days... But this condition was not worth it. I have spent more in the past 3 months on doctor bills than I would have on cigs...

Well about 3 weeks after starting to take the medication I was driving a dump truck at work as I pulled into our yard, that was the last thing I remember, when I woke up I was being admitted into the hospital, stayed in for 3 days. At that time my doctor told me to stop taking the chantix. I was put on higher dose of blood pressure meds. I was put on depression medicine, cholesterol medicine, and I have always been a healthy person. I have spoken with an attorney, but I also ask myself how can a medical doctor prescribe this medicine to anyone knowing the effects it has caused on so many people.

This time I titrated my dose very slowly and monitored my emotions/reactions closely. I have experienced some pretty weird/vivid dreams, some irritability and some depressive thoughts. However I was well aware of the risks involved in taking the medication and also of the mental challenges involved in quitting smoking (this is now at least my 4th attempt). If at anytime I had felt (or feel, I am still taking it) that I was seriously depressed or suicidal I would have sought help, either through my doctor or even a suicide hotline. The bottom line is there are serious risks when taking any medication. Each individual needs to evaluate the risks vs. benefits and decide if they want to take the drug or not. Educate yourself and don't rely solely on health professionals for information and be aware of your own past medical history and state of mind. AND DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP WHEN YOU FEEL MENTALLY UNSTABLE, IT IS NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF EVER WHETHER CAUSED BY MEDICATION/DRUGS, STRESS, LOSS OR ANYTHING ELSE.
