IUD Birth Control Side Effects May Include Risk of Rheumatoid Arthritis: Study
The findings of a new study suggest that the use of the Mirena birth control and other intrauterine devices (IUD) could trigger crippling joint problems in women.
In findings presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology, researchers from the University of Colorado School of Medicine indicate that women may face more than a doubled risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis if they use the birth control implants, which have become increasingly popular in recent years as a way to provide long-term protection against pregnancy.
Intrauterine devices (IUD) are T-shaped plastic implants designed to be placed in the uterus to provide a “hassle-free” form of birth control, avoiding the need to remember to take a daily pill. Also referred to as an interauterine system (IUS), the most widely used forms of the birth control are marketed under the brand names Mirena, which releases the progrestin levonorgestrel, and Paragard, which contains copper wire coils around the plastic frame.

Learn MoreLooking at data on nearly 1,000 women, the researchers in this new study looked at side effects of various different birth control methods, evaluating impact of the birth control on blood levels of antibodies that scientists have linked to the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Known as antibodies to citrullinated protein antigens (ACPA), elevated levels can indicate someone will develop RA in the future.
The study found that side effects of IUD birth control were associated with a 268% increased chance of developing rheumatoid arthritis later in life, while those who took daily birth control pills actually had a reduced risk, compared to women who used no contraception at all.
IUD birth control has become a more popular alternative in recent years, as a number of different groups have recommended the implant for younger girls who may be at risk of failing to adhere to use of a daily birth control pill.
According to a recent report by the Guttmacher Institute, use of IUDs has increased from only 2.4% of women in the U.S. in 2002, to 8.5% by 2009. Planned Parenthood has also reported a 75% increase in IUD risks from 2008 to 2012.
The findings about the potential link between IUD birth control and rheumatoid arthritis come amid increasing concerns over potential problems with Mirena IUD birth control in particular, which has been linked to reports of the implant perforating the uterus and migrating to other areas of the body, potentially causing infections and other complications requiring surgical removal.
Since 2000, more than 70,000 adverse events have been filed with the FDA involving Mirena IUD complications, including at least 5,000 cases involving women who indicated that Mirena moved out of place since 2008, and 1,322 reports where the Mirena IUD punctured the uterus.
There are currently more than 2,000 Mirena IUD injury lawsuits pending against Bayer Healthcare in state and federal courts nationwide, which all allege that the drug maker knew or should have known about the risk of spontaneous perforations, which can happen months or even years after the implant is put in place and confirmed to be in the proper position.
The first federal Mirena bellwether trials involving the migration injuries are expected to begin in March 2016.

I decided to have my Gynocologist remove the IUD on Friday! She wanted me to keep it in for atleast 6 months but I also read that it causes breast cancer n ovarian cysts! It’s not worth the side effects.. my Gynocologist repeatedly assured me it doesn’t cause breast cancer while she was trying to convince me to get it because she said I had very high estrogen levels which actually wasn’t true because my family doctor told me my bloodwork showed my estrogen level was normal! Gout n rheumatoid arthritis should be listed as a side effect of the Mirena! It was very difficult for me to find this info online, but I knew this was not normal, I am 52 and never had gout in my life! I don’t eat much animal protein at all or drink alcohol which I believe can cause gout! I will be doing a juice cleanse of cranberry and celery juice tomorrow n also taking natural tart cherry supplements to see if it will help heal this gout! Also I’ve been having pain in my breasts especially around the areola, headaches and weight gain! But the worst is the joint pain all over my body!

I live in Ottawa and had unexplained abnormal bleeding for 5 months continuously. After trying all, my docs insisted to get mirena. Now from last 7 months after mirena- bleeding has stopped but I have sever joints pain. I can’t live like this when I’m only 38. My doctors are pushing my concerns away, all other tests they’ve asked me to do are absolutely normal.

Walked to my gp. Thought of appendicitis, they didnt let me walk to the hospital, bloodwork done, the inflammation markers were up, my iud was looked at, they didnt know what it was. The last one was a rheumatologist, did a fluid test on the knee, positive for Spa (spondilo arthitis) . As I had all these vague symptoms, i started some digging on my own. I demanded my husband to take the iud out. The next day the breasts were normal again. The iud did set my arthritis in motion as it is still progressing to my other knee, wrists, shoulder. Now im 39, and cant walk without pain. It sucks. I guess it is hard to prove the iud is the culprit.

I have just come out of hospital after having sepsis. My coil was removed and the hospital sent it to biologics and it grew nasty bacteria. My surgeon is sure that this was the route cause of my sepsis infection which migrated into my ovarian cyst. Since being home I've realised that my arthritis has gone! I used to be on weekly methotrexate injections plus daily naproxen for joint stiffness. [Show More]I have just come out of hospital after having sepsis. I didn’t take any NSAIDs today just to see if I’d feel any improvement! My headache went away within 2 hours. My knees and ankles feel better this evening and my neck seems to be a bit better. I am convinced it was the iud! I had it for a short time in my 20’s until I kept getting yeast infections, and had it removed then as well and it was embedded in my uterus. I only tried it again because I really don’t want to take a pill for BC or take any hormones for that matter. But the cooper definitely does something to my body. This is just so crazy. I never ever would have thought an iud could cause this. I’m just so glad I put two and two together quickly and got it removed asap.

It was so bad that I couldn't walk down stairs without help. It was excruciating. But it would ease throughout the day. My doctor's dismissed my concerns but I begged them to take out the Mirena. I had a mirena coil put in end of Aug. For4 months since, i have suffered excruciating joint pain , am struggling to walk and sleep. I had no idea that my coil could be the cause. I intend take an appointment to have it removed..... have other people found that thier symptoms disappeared when the coil was removed?

The Mirena ruined has ruined my life, I had it inserted when I was 26yrs old in Feb 2019 and had it in for 9 months. Over the course of those 9 months my health declined so drastically that I was suicidal. I still don’t know to this day how I survived it. I have spent my life savings trying to get better with no improvement in my knee and I now have a disability with this hugely inflamed joint that has been holding me back in my life going on for 3 years now. My heart breaks for every woman effected by these IUD’s and were promised that they are safe and now is not believed while she suffers. I pray that more research will be done and Bayer will read all these comments from real woman who have been injured and are in distress just trying to get by each day and see how so many lives have been destroyed by this money making devise.

This is a resident practice, so you don't just see one provider, and I never actually spoke to the doctor himself, but I was very irritated that he just brushed me off like that. It is clearly is a gynecological issue, but am going to Urgent Care to deal with the problem because their family health practice has been subpar in the competence department. (Note: I had the same IUD after my first child for 3 years, with no complications.)

I'm suffering from RA at 26. I used to run weekly and was very active. Now I can't get dressed or do daily tasks without intense joint pain in my knees, feet, ankles, fingers, shoulders, and hips. I have had Mirena for 2 years and paraguard before that for 5 years. I just found this forum. Prior to my Mirena, I had lost 100 lbs and worked out twice a day, even working a 12-hour job. Over the course of a year, I've lost all mobility in my right hip, it literally seizes up! Over the course of a year, I've lost all mobility in my right hip, it literally seizes up! I have sciatic pain 24/7 all the way down to my foot. I also fall a lot, because I lose muscle strength or something, but my right leg completely gives out on me. I'm 43, feeling 100 and my doctors just push my concerns away, saying there is no correlation. I am in so much pain, I can't live like this! Going from only 1 medication to 7 in a year, is not a good quality of life. I'm now calling my gynecologist tomorrow and demanding this thing be removed!

So I promised to respond to my mirena coil removal and the effects So I have lost 5/6 Lbs since 5th may removal date… but to be fair been on a retreat where they restricted our diet. My hip only aches slightly my pins and needles down my right arm have almost stopped and my back ache has vertically disappeared. My retreat did help hugely and gave me a kick start and maybe it could be down t[Show More]So I promised to respond to my mirena coil removal and the effects So I have lost 5/6 Lbs since 5th may removal date… but to be fair been on a retreat where they restricted our diet. I’m 54 and recommended the Mirena coil as part of my HRT treatment, combined with an oestrogen gel last June. I’m 54 and recommended the Mirena coil as part of my HRT treatment, combined with an oestrogen gel last June. At that time I went to the gym for an hour each day( hard core) and never had any problems with joints or muscles and considered myself to be very fit. 10 month on and I feel like my body is literally falling apart. I can’t remember what the inside of the gym looks like anymore. I go from one joint problem to the next so much so, it’s becoming a family joke. My 81 year old mother is fitter than me and often has to help me!!!. What’s all that about i often ask myself!!! First my neck( cracking and painful) then my hip joint, where I under went twice weekly physio( Still not full movable) and lately, it’s been my sciatica joint. I had to go to bed for a few days and couldn’t even walk. I’m currently being treated by an osteopath for that ailment!!! Apart from it costing a small fortune, I have started to think what on earth is going on with my bones/joints. It never even crossed my mind it could be connected to my coil however, now looking back it’s screamingly obvious. Especially, as I’ve had some sort of debilitating joint problem, ever since. I’m so delighted because it all makes sense. I’m so grateful for this forum. I think it’s very worrying that Doctors are not more clued up on these life changing side effects. I’ve put on at least 16 pounds in less than a year because I can’t exercise and that sometimes includes walking. That Mirena coil is coming out ASAP Thank you everyone

I had Mirena in 2018 and after suffering 6 weeks of horrible hormonal side effects, it finally became tolerable and the solution I needed for heavy bleeding. Then after 4 months, I suddenly developed ever worsening joint pain, especially in my fingers and toes. I tested negative for rheumatoid factor. Reading some online cases that Mirena could be the culprit (although not officially acknowledged[Show More]I had Mirena in 2018 and after suffering 6 weeks of horrible hormonal side effects, it finally became tolerable and the solution I needed for heavy bleeding. Then after 4 months, I suddenly developed ever worsening joint pain, especially in my fingers and toes. I tested negative for rheumatoid factor. Reading some online cases that Mirena could be the culprit (although not officially acknowledged by Mirena), I had it removed after 7 months, against doctor protests. Their reasoning was, why suffer through all the hormonal issues all over again if Mirena wasn't the cause, in addition to the high cost of reinsertion. I insisted on immediate removal and within days, 80% of the pain was gone, with the rest resolving within a few weeks. Spread the word to your OBGYNs, because most never heard of this side effect!

I had two Mirena put in in December 21 (I have a bicornate uterus) and since then I have had constant bleeding and/or discharge and extreme joint and back pain. I will only sleep through the night if I take a high dose of ibuprofen and pandol. I am finding doing any normal tasks difficult and the pain is making it hard to focus on work or home. It started with my hips giving out. I would be walking up stairs and they would give out. Then in my shoulder, and thought maybe I was sleeping on it wrong. For a while I did not notice anything out of "order", then three years ago I started noticing extreme fatigue and joint pain. It started with my hips giving out. I would be walking up stairs and they would give out. Then in my shoulder, and thought maybe I was sleeping on it wrong. After sleeping on my back, and a couple weeks went by, the pain got much worse. I had trouble lifting my arm over my head, and had extreme pain even trying to open a window. I went to the doctor, and I asked him if this could be a form of arthritis in the shoulder. He said, "you're too young to have arthritis." After much gaslighting I felt I could only rely on myself for medical treatment. I started to do gentle stretching and yoga to try to help, to find I could'nt even put any weight on my wrists. There was no way I could do the "downward facing dog" for even a few seconds without extreme pain. (at this point I am only 26 years old, I am 29 now). My knees have been achy for many years now. Feeling like restless leg syndrome. My anxiety, depression, and racing mind have been out of control, and show up for no explainable reason. I am getting my IUD extracted tomorrow, and feel so liberated. THESE COMPANIES NEED TO STOP MAKING THIS PRODUCT AND LYING TO WOMEN. THEY WILL HAVE CRIPPLED BODIES BEFORE THE AGE OF 30.

I was put on ibuprofen 800mg 3-4 times a day, and if I ever missed a day, I would be in constant pain. I never attributed it (nor did my doctors) to my ParaGard. Fast forward to Oct. 8, 2021 and I had my ParaGard re[Show More]I had ParaGard inserted in 2020, shortly after I started having joint pain in various parts of my body, lower back pain, and abdominal cramping (like I was constantly on my period). Fast forward to Oct. 8, 2021 and I had my ParaGard removed so that we could have another baby, and overnight all my pain disappeared (except for occasional aches). It was then that I thought they might be connected, but I couldn't find any resources or validation on this. I'm so happy to read other's stories and know I'm not alone.

I am in tears readying these messages from other women. It has been 2 plus years since I had my Mirena IUD. I was pretty healthy before I had IUD, but at some point I started having indescribable back, chest, shoulders pains. Everything hurt at this point my knees, hands, feet, ankles, elbows, shoulders and neck but there were no answers as to why. I went back to the ER and they ran tests only to discover it was RA. I have had such a decline in my quality of life since having this thing put in back in 2012 and here we are in 2021 and I'm still suffering repercussions of something that was supposed to be safe. *I had my IUD removed in 2015 but my symptoms never went away. All of my joints, including but not limited to my knees and hips are making cracking sounds. It all started with one knee and now the pain is all over. I was healthy before getting Mirena IUD at the beginning of 2021 now I'm suffering from crippling elbow joint pain and cannot perform my daily normal activities or perform work expectations. I've seen numerous doctors and had x-rays done and they brush it off as tennis elbow. I never had any issues before getting the IUD. I'm having it removed 7/2/21 but am concerned about permanent damage.

Needless to say I’m in a constant fog and my kind is so unclear at times I just feel out of it. I’ve had more depressive episodes and anxiety than normal for me. I even feel less connected to my spiritual side and nature. When I can track my cycle I feel so much more grounded in life. I will be having my IUD explained very soon. Reading all the comments has made me feel so validated and that it’s not just all in my head.

Then I noticed my hips starting to hurt and pop constantly. Not long after that I noticed pain in each of my finger joints on both hands. I was in a massive amount of pain. My feet, ankles were swelling and very hot to the touch. The back of my heel (Achilles area) would be so stiff and sore I couldn't walk at all. My husband purchased some compression socks. Those helped to the pain I could walk but was still in a massive amount of pain. After doing some research, I assumed I had RA and had a gut feeling the IUD caused it since I was in great health prior to having it implanted. I was blood tested for RA the numbers came back as high probably and I was referred to a rheumatologist next month.

I have been using copper IUD since 4 months back and now I am feeling joint pain at knee. But it is unsymetrical or one sided and my Dr. told me that current symptoms are Rheomatoid arthritis. Hence, I planned to disregard using IUD.

I had the Mirena since oct 2019. A month ago I woke up with swollen painful feet. This continued and now my hands also are swollen and palnful. I am active as have not been able to exercise or take my dogs for walks. I got my iud out a week ago and praying these symptoms go away. My doctor is sending me to a rheumatologist.

Mirena IUD destroyed my life. Hair loss, adult acne, anxiety, insomnia, heart palpitations, depression. Excessive bleeding, joint pain. Once removed tested for thyroid, pituitary problems etc and health has never been the same. Where do we go for answers. And Compensation

I had a Marina IUD for 5 years towards the latter part I had a shoulder and knee pain and I knew this should be taken out Yes the next day it self there was a huge difference My shoulder pain became less and I was able to climb the stairs easily The Gynaecologist should advise the patient before taking such procedures

Never once did I have a gout attack, this feels like 24/7 joint stiffness and pain that’s getting worse sometimes. We are an active family. Seems very strange. I’m not sure what to do. A majority of my pain has always been in the tops of my forearms near my elbows. My left foot scares me a bit because I’m afraid one day it’s going to get so stiff I can’t walk.

I've been on Mirena since February 2019 due to endometriosis. While it fixed that issue, as of January 2021 I now have Rheumatoid Arthritis. MY RA dr has me on Methotrexate, but now I'm wondering if removing this IUD would make the RA go away??? I'm willing to go back to the drawing board with the Endo, if it would get rid of this chronic pain...

I was perfectly healthy before I got the mirena inserted approx in 2014. I had no symptoms during the first year. I started to get joint pain, numbness in the hands and feet and on the left side of my face and head the following year. I thought I was having a stroke. I had MRI’s done for the tingling and numbness but nothing was found. I had blood work done for autoimmune disorder and it showed possible autoimmune disease. Now years later I have pain and swollen in my knee and herbeden nodules resulting in crooked fingers. It’s terrible. Needless to say I got the mirena removed in 2016 due to pain in my lower abdomen and left side of my back from the mirena. Apparently my GI dr said it didn’t move and she decided to do a urine test to check for any infections. That’s when I found out I had protein and blood in my urine. Then I had CT scans.....to check my kidneys. Eventually I was diagnosed with kidney disease. I had 1000 mg of protein in my urine. So I’m currently on meds and see a nephrologist on a regular basis. This caused me a lot of pain and suffering and I tried back in 2017 to file a case against Bayer but at the time I was told by a lawyer that they were only suing for pseudo tumor cases. I waited too long to file as well bc I was so busy with drs appointments and trying to figure out what was wrong with me. No one believes you that it’s due to the mirena and in my heart of hearts I know it’s from that. I seek to file a case against bayer again As my symptoms are getting worse and I know it’s an injustice and all these ladies and myself deserve compensation.

I have been having hip pain for 3 years. I have fluid on my hip joint. I have the fluid taken out and the results came back I have a infection, bacteria from a implant. The Copper IUD is the only implant I had. I feel when I first got it I could not move my legs and had no joint pain. I had it removed. I have fluid on my hip causing alot of pain.

It’s been almost 10 months since I’ve received the implant and I am almost incapable of caring for my son. Prior to pregnancy I was active and fit. I gained a significant amount of weight during pregnancy (I’ve since lost the weight) but I do not believe this has anything to do with it. Even at my heaviest weight, I was not experiencing these issues. I have made an appointment to explant the IUD and I cannot wait to get this poison out of me. I got the mirena due to bad periods that lasted for 21 days. Shortly after getting it I developed SI Joint pain and have had to get several injections and now I'm on lyrica. Next, is a nerve ablation.

Just had it removed in doctors office today. I pray these symptoms don’t have long term effects.

Come August 2017 of August, I started developing headaches. It was tolerable at the very beginning. It was tolerable at the very beginning. Then months after that, I started experiencing severe migraines I never had prior to insertion of my IUD. Then early 2018, I noticed that my headaches were severely progressing and more often than not radiates to my arms and leg. The worst part of all I feel the stiffness in my muscles which made me suffer of sleepless nights. Everytime I see my doctor/doctors regarding this, they would just brush it off and just diagnose me with tension muscle headache, carpal tunnel syndrome, migraine, tmj, etc. I had been prescribed with strong pain relievers, from ibuprofen to butalb, to naproxen, and even bbaclofen. Now 2019, I am really feeling my muscle pain is getting worse each day and I am starting to develop pain on my knees. And everytime I move, my bones are making these popping sounds. I have a schedule for my annual physical exam. Last year my calcium level was lower than normal which was really weird because I never had that issue before IUD insertion. I am thinking of getting my copper level checked out of my own pocket because I have no idea if my doctor will even let me have that. Also, my mood swings are really bad. I don't even recognize myself anymore. I have been very very short tempered.

I did as the said and my knee did not get better, my right ankle started hurting. Again I went to the doctor and was sent to orthopedics for my knee and ankle, they took xrays of my knee and ankle and I was told my xrays where ok and showed no signs of arthritis, that it was all due to overusage and to just continue taking ibuprofen and gave me a knee brace and ankle brace and to wear super soles on my shoes. My knee still hurts, my ankle too, now the bones at the bottom of my feet hurt, my right knee started to bother me, I cant walk right, I'm in pain if I stand or walk to much. I try to stay active and exercise, but I'm in pain afterwards.This can't be normal! I started to think it might be the IUD. It all started after me getting it. I'm making an appointment to have it removed.

The following month it was the other side. They told me it was tennis elbow, whatever. January I couldn't get out of my bed due to my hip. By Feb. I was tested for RA. , it was positive. I had cooper coil 2 months before and I have got very stiff and painful neck, shoulders and hand like arthiritis type symptoms. Day by day it's getting worse. I can't weight to get rid of it but I need to wait all day in family planing clinic for appointment. 2 daughters under 3 can't wait with me and I'm struggling with this pain
