MANUFACTURERS: Merck subsidiaries Organon Pharmaceuticals USA Inc., Organon USA Inc., Organon International Inc., Schering Plough Corp., and Akzo Nobel NV.

OVERVIEW: The NuvaRing is a once-a-month combined contraceptive vaginal ring, which was approved for use in the United States in October 2001. It is a birth control ring that is inserted in the vagina and used to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Nuva Ring works by releasing controlled amounts of ethinyl estradiol (EE) and etonogestrel, which combine to modify female hormones.

NUVARING BLOOD CLOT SIDE EFFECTS: The use of NuvaRing birth control has been associated with an increased risk of blood clots, which could lead to serious and potentially fatal injuries.

Blood clots, also known as thrombosis, can occur when blood cells clump together in the vein, restricting blood flow. If the blood clot forms in the deep veins of the legs, pelvis or arms, known as deep vein thrombosis, this could severely restrict blood flow to the heart, lungs or brain.

If a blood clot breaks off and travels through the blood stream, it could get lodged near the lung causing a pulmonary embolism. The pulmonary artery is the main intake valve of blood into the lungs, and if this artery is blocked, the body could suffer from a lack of oxygen.

The use of the NuvaRing has been found to potentially increase the risk of blood clots, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, which could also lead to an ischemic stroke, heart attack or sudden death.

I was using the nuvaring in 2008 and became pregnant while using the ring. My daughter now almost 12 years old has JIA and was born with a hole in her heart. I had 4 children before her and all 4 are healthy and have had no issues. I believe the nuvaring is to blame for her health issues.

I had a pulmonary embolism from the nuvaring in 2006. I went through the lawsuit, my name was on the list of plaintiffs. After years of being told to just wait for the outcome, I left it alone for a couple years. Then the blame game started and it was basically like ping pong between different law firms in 3 different states, all placing the blame on one another. My address was the same as when I filed the suit.

To Kristen, I would definitely see a doctor. I was having the same pains shortly after I had started on nuvaring, and it turned out that I had DVT from it...10 blood clots from my leg all the way up to my middle abdominal area.

This morning now a week into this my right hip has started the same thing I can't even sleep unless I lay flat on my back. I just want to know if I should see a doctor to make sure I don't have issues with my hips. Or if I should just take the Nuvaring out and see if that stops the heavy bleeding and pain. Because ibfroufen and Tylenol don't even touch the pain for the cramps or the hip pain. Has anyone experienced this before?!?

I started having bad cramping after delivering my son nearly 5 yrs ago. My Dr gave me tons of options. 1 was to have a hysterectomy(no way). 1 was to have a laproscopy to see if I had any fibroids(none). My Dr gave me tons of options. 1 was to have a hysterectomy(no way). 1 was to have a laproscopy to see if I had any fibroids(none). Several types of birth control were discussed but because I was breastfeeding I couldn't really take much of anything. Bad side effects from depo turned me away from it, the pill that has the same active ingredients as depo has been tried in the past with the same side effects as depo(I not only had side effects but also got pregnant on both birth controls), the final decision he made was the nuvaring. I was skeptical about it because of the insertion directions(I'm a prude I guess). At first it seemed it was helping with the bad cramps. But after a few months they started to come back, with friends! The pains feel like someone is giving me a cath!!! I went to my Dr and told him I was going to stop the ring and just do the whole latex free OTC birth control. He was fine with it. Well, when me and my husband split up in July of 2009 I decided, just in case, I should go back on birth control. He said to try the ring again, I did and could only handle it for a couple months again. Here it is, April of 2011, almost 2 yrs later. I have headaches that put me down for 3-7 days prior to my cycle, intense pains that double me over like contractions, and if I don't get to the restroom within minutes of the first pain than I have to throw away another pair. I have those same pains for a week! Than I get a week of resting and the ovulation pains start, same pains as my cycle. The pains have gotten so bad recently that I've had double cycles since November or December of 2010. I had to stop my water therapy because of them. I never know when I'm gonna get my surprise visit! If these are all side effects to the ring than how do I file a suit? I'm tired of meds doing these things to me. Not only have I used the ring but I've had Chantix, Topamax, Yazmin, Lyrica, Tramadol along with many other meds that I've had to stop due to horrible side effects. I have always had dreams, but these dreams lately have been so vivid that I wake up at 3am calling friends and family to make sure they were okay because my dreams said they were hurt or dead..I need to find some info on these suits.

I have used the Nuvaring for a year and I think it is wonderful. I have had no side effects, although I was warned of potential side effects by the doctor prior to choosing this birth control. Both of the previous forms of birth control left me with horrendous cramp and abnormal periods. The Nuvaring has thus far proven far better in those respects.

I signed up for Nuvaring's text message reminders that tell you when to take it out. On the appropriate date, they texted me that I was 5 weeks pregnant! Not very funny. I called and complained and eventually some drone read me an apology off a computer screen. Between the health risks and the awful customer service, it doesn't seem like there are many good reasons to use this product.

Yes I also experienced leg pain after removing the nuvaring on the 4th week of use. I don't think I will try to method of birth control again.

My doctor prescribed NuvaRing due to irregular periods and pain from ovarian cysts. She warned me about the many risks of NuvaRing, but she felt it was the least risky non-surgical alternative. What about minor, yet painful reactions caused by NuvaRing usage such as yeast infection and/or bacterial vaginosis? Has anyone else experienced increased occurrences of these or similar problems?

All I know is I have been using this Birth control for about two years now and I had very good blood pressure before and now it is very high. I am 43 and in relatively good health before does this have to do with the Nuvaring, does anyone know before I have a heart attack!
