Cold Therapy Lawsuits

The use of cold therapy units, also known as cryotherapy or ice therapy machines, to treat injured limbs may pose a risk of nerve damage and other problems, including frostbite, skin and tissue damage. Some injuries have required amputation of the arm or leg as a result of the cold therapy problems, and could result in a life-time disability.

COLD THERAPY LAWSUIT STATUS: Potential lawsuits are being examined by product liability lawyers for individuals throughout the United States who have experienced a severe and permanent injury from cold therapy machine use.

OVERVIEW: Cold therapy or cryotherapy may be used to treat an injured arm, leg hand or foot, usually following orthopedic surgery. It is commonly used to treat joint pain and post-surgical swelling.

As part of the treatment, the area is surrounded by a cold pad or other apparatus and subjected to cooler temperatures over long periods of time.

Problems with cold therapy units have been associated with serious and debilitating injuries, including frost bite, nerve damage, circulation problems, gangrene and chronic pain. Many cold therapy machines fail to provide adequate instructions and warning about the risk of a serious injury from cryotherapy.

COLD THERAPY INJURY: Cold therapy units are often promoted as a do-it-yourself treatment that is conducted at home by patients. However, if the device is used for too long or at an extremely cold temperature, it can result in severe nerve damage or skin damage.

Symptoms of a cold therapy unit injury could include:

  • Visible Skin Abrasions
  • Pain
  • Sensitivity
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Prickling
  • Burning Sensation

Permanent nerve damage from cold therapy can leave an individual with a severe and potentially debilitating injury, with chronic pain, loss of feeling to the area and other problems.

I had a knee replacement January 09 and I still have lots of numbness. The pain is very bad on the numb side of leg.

wouldn't this be similar to frostbite. and it seems counterproductive since we are warm blooded. cold temperature burns just like hot temps.
