Jeep Wrangler Fire Risk Investigated by NHTSA

U.S. transportation safety officials have begun an investigation into the possibility that Jeep Wranglers may burst into flames for seemingly no apparent reason.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began investigating 2007 and 2008 model Jeep Wranglers for fire risk on August 12, after receiving three reports of the transmission overheating, which in at least one case caused the vehicle to burst into flames.

The preliminary NHTSA investigation report indicates that the fires may be the result of transmission overheating, which could lead to transmission fluid leaking out and contacting hot surfaces, potentially resulting in fire. One report indicated that the vehicle began to smoke when transmission fluid leaked onto the catalytic converter.

Depending on the results of the investigation, it is possible that a Jeep Wrangler recall could be issued for up to 220,000 vehicles, including two-door and four-door versions, with either manual or automatic transmissions.

The investigation comes at a time when Chrysler Group LLC, the new company that emerged from recent bankruptcy proceedings, just announced that it will accept potential liability for personal injury lawsuits involving defects with older Chrysler vehicles made before the bankruptcy. Jeep is a division of Chrysler.

Chrysler confirmed that they are aware of some Jeep Wranglers fires in China, but indicates that no reports have been received within the United States. Company officials say they are cooperating with the NHTSA investigation.

I really don't know what they did but the problem has never surfaced again. Since then I have been up to Maunakea Summit a few times with no problems. My transmission has no problems and my trans fluid is still Red clean! I now have 78,000 Miles on it and my ABS module Code C2200 has appeared. It seems to be a hot item trying to find one. Transmission line had also blew leaking fluid all over the place and blowing the transmission up a few months ago. Chrysler wouldn't do anything for me even though I have the infinity drivetrain warranty. I've owned several Jeeps and still have 4 of them, this thing is a huge piece of crap. I'll never purchase another Chrysler product again.

When I told the dealership I had a Case ID with Chrysler, they changed their tune and had the part(s). This was at 26000 miles. 2nd incident: I had driven to NY from SC with no issues while driving. Next day, cold start, Hot Oil warning. Took to a local auto repair shop and they "cleared the error" stating there was no apparent cause and they "didn't know why" the error occurred. 3rd incident: called dealership I bought the Jeep from and told the guy (whom I know by name) that I was having the same problem, "Hot Oil Message." He stated, "Hot Oil message, I don't know what you're talking about!" Really??? He was clearly lying, and I knew right then he was of no help to me. So, I went to the nearest Chrysler in a town 15 minutes away where I had moved to as it was closer anyway...letting the liar-part go, thinking the other dealership would surely do the right thing. This is at 34000 mi. The dealership has my Jeep currently and told me today that the dealership I bought it from wrote "added computer to Jeep," as the supposed fix for the original issue (recall). The guy at the closest dealership told me the computer wouldn't even "talk" to him so he couldn't diagnose the problem until he figures out how to get the 1st computer to "talk" to him so he can get to the 2nd computer and try to diagnose an issue with the 2nd computer. Got a call this afternoon that it was driven around town with no problems after clearing the error message again. Awaiting final results now. I'm 2000 miles away from being out of warranty. Researching internet reveals NUMEROUS accounts of same issue with many people barely escaping engulfed in flames Jeeps. This IS AN ISSUE. CLASS ACTION SOUGHT. I have posted my complaint to the above referenced government site, too.

They took the vehicle on May 27, 2014 and gave me a rental for my wife to drive while they fixed the problem. I did not have my vehicle back until Friday May 30, 2014. The next day May 31, 2014 we took the vehicle for our first off road trail ride on the well marked out Wickenburg trail as referenced in several Arizona off road trail guides. We only took the trail halfway through and turned around as the book remarked it turned more aggressive and we were still unfamiliar with the vehicle. The following Monday June 2, 2014 I again had to have the vehicle back to the dealer to have the windshield replaced as was agreed upon at the time of purchase. The dealer again gave us a rental for the day for the inconvenience. On Monday June 9, 2014, my wife was again driving the vehicle, this time on her way to a job interview, she drove from our surprise home on the 303 loop to the I-17, she merged onto the I-17 was driving about 60 miles an hour and just before the 1/2 sign for the Jomax Rd exit, the vehicles drive shaft broke, and the transfer case exploded and caught on fire. The explosion opened a hole into the driver's floor board and the fire entered the cabin causing burns to the backs of my wife's right calf and both upper thighs, as well as the heels of her feet. My wife quickly pulled the vehicle off the road, cut the engine, opened the drivers door and tried to escape the burning vehicle. At this point the seatbelt release would not release and she was trapped in the burning vehicle. She struggled with the seatbelt and the release button, she tried to wiggle under the seatbelt waist strap and was hanging out of the vehicle, the vehicle was still rolling to a stop at this point and she was drug about 15 feet along side the vehicle causing bruising on both legs, abrasions and cuts on her left foot as her shoe had been ripped off her foot. Finally she was released from the seatbelt and she fell out from the burning vehicle she turned around and grabbed the fire extinguisher that had slipped out from under the drivers seat. She quickly began dosing the fire inside the cab. At this point an unknown tanker truck driver had pulled off the road and came running with an additional fire extinguisher and began putting the fire out under the vehicle. Additional unknown drivers had stopped to see if additional help was needed. ADOT workers and two highway patrol officers had stopped to assist. As soon as the fire was out my wife reached into the cab to grab her phone and laptop bag. She called my parents, as I work at a surface mine near lake pleasant and do not have cell reception during the day. My parents called 911 to get a fire truck in route to her, and began driving to her for help. Upon later inspections, we found that the gas tank was actually on fire and my wife had narrowly escaped a horrible explosion. Has anyone else had this happen after having the transmission recall fixed??

Jeep should have stepped up to the plate and installed the new transmission cooler rather than letting the vehicle run hot, shortening the life of the transmission. This is totally unacceptable.

Thank GOD, I bought an extended warranty and took it to the dealership. Unfortunately, the dealership threw a "disclaimer" at me and said Chrysler doesn't say any problem exists! This disclaimer states it is necessary to add 1 quart of oil per 750 miles. Trust me, my jeep uses more than this amount, and I am starting to smell something burning!! I am awaiting another phone call from the dealership regarding my persistence in making this right. Please keep me informed of any action regarding Chrysler's disregard of problems. As many have said, I would never have bought this jeep if I had known the problems!!

I am anxious to hear what they have to say. I suspect I will be blamed or they will skirt the issue. I live in Canada, by the way. I can't believe how many people have had such serious issues. The fire department finally showed up and they even had trouble getting it out. Seems like the fire started up front underneath the engine firewall area. I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 turbo diesel and they fixed all the problems with it under warranty with no problems when it was new. I guess now that Fiat owns Chrysler they are going run it cheaply, I read on Bloomberg news that Fiat was going to move some of the Jeep production to China and Italy to save money on labor.

Our 2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara (58k miles) just burned to the ground this past saturday (10-20-2012). It looks like it started either on firewall or just below it. A total loss - our insurance company has been notified and we hope to be back on the road again in another vehicle soon.

I have noticed issues with the vehicle shortly after purchasing it brand new frm the dealer. The problems started with the car not stating and this would ba random occurance. I would constantley have my jeep back to he dealer to hopefully find out what the issue was and always told the same response- once connected to the scanner there was no problem reporting (not to mention battery checks always reflected good condition). Then other things would happen like the power windows wouldn't work, the satelite radio would switch to amfm radio, the lights on the radio seemed to b dimmed on the outer left section of the radios face, the jeep stalling while crossing a busy intersection. In 2009 I had been stuck needing a jump and then went straight to the dealr, and was told the battery was completely dead, so the battery was replaced (keep in mind I am alway having the dealer comply with all required/recommended maintenace as instructed in owners manuel). Ater replacing the battery it appeared to have corrected the issues, or at least I thought. 2yrs ago I had the battery replaced and recently the following issues have surfaced again or new problems have occured: jeep stalling while driving 35mph, the esp light came on as though I had no traction (was hydroplaining as u would n raining conditions) durning a time we are expierencing a drout (hadn't rained for weeks/months) and the jeep was operating as though "a timing belt had just went out" u can't drive oher then to the side of the road. I turned the jeep off, took key out and waited a Few seconds then restarted.. everythng started to operate as normal as though the problem disappeared. Then my husband said could smell gas n the garage where the jeep is alwas parked.....not until reading all of these posts ddid I realize the gas smell could have been from my jeep. Tonight 8/30/12 the interrior lights wouldn't turn on with the normal switch but would turn on when opening the doors. I have less then a year remaining on my loan and was looking forward to no car payment but when thinking of my familys saftey I am not so sure this would be in anyones best interest.....coming from somone whom has ALWAYS loved and always owned jeeps....why tarnish the jeep reputation Chrysler- fix th problem you created. If anyone has proceeded with legal counsel please contact me, for I am goin to do the same as well as include the media as much as I possibly can.

I drifted to the next turn off, since all systems shut down. A sheriff was also coming the other way and was running his dash-cam. So it was caught on his video. I pulled over and jumped out, as did my passenger. Got my stuff out of the back seat and it was fully engulfed in flame. 45 seconds after it shut down, it was fully engulfed. 45 seconds!!! If I had been on the interstate, we would both be dead!!! In the process I inhaled a bunch of this thick, black, acrid smoke. Still coughing and have a sore throat. It took the fire dept., and 2 trucks 30 minutes to put the fire out. Fire one used all it's water, so the second one jumped in using foam. Odd thing is, when I pulled over and put the Jeep into Park, it kept rolling...a lot. I had to grab the E-brake to stop it. I'm prepared, as is my isurance company to fight Jeep on this! I've already posted photos on the various social media websites.

When I proceeded to drive the smoke smell became stronger and stronger and my child shouted look mom our car is smoking.. I immediately got home as we was right up the street and my husband looked under the hood and the whole under the hood reeked smoke smell and all through my vehicle as well. I contacted Chrysler/Dodge the very next day Thursday, January 5, 2012 to report this and was told that they would not be responsible and I had it out with the recall department; well, this nut named Mike. Still to this day I had not heard back from Chrysler and I too was told that this guy name Jay would contact me. Apparently JAY is taking his sweet 'ol time because he must have been told that I am waiting to blow a gasket on him. I advised that anyone with a 2005 Dodge Durango if you are experiencing a sluggish drive, your light indicators constantly dinging while in motion and you brake lights stays on constantly and your car catches a fire, please contact NHTSA AT 1-888-327-4236 and make a report of it. I can go on and on about the defects of my car as i keep it in impeccable condition and now this smoke has taken the cake. I will not purchase another dodge vehicle ever again, simply because of its customer services it lacks in assisting their customers professionally. Lastly, my truck is still malfunctioning and today is Wednesday, January 11, 2012 and no one has gotten back with me from Dodge. So, if you wish to ring these fools bell by all means go ahead. ____________________________________________________ Recall: 1-800-763-8422 Special Investigation unit: 248-944-7149 you can reach Jay or Maggie 248-944-7084 Customer assistance Center: 1-800-423-6343 We are horrified that our child had to experience something like this and after having to report this to everyone that just laughs and lie in your face makes us sick to our stomachs. What a damn shame DODGE for having defective vehicles. Oh, NHTSA will provide you with information on how many vehicles in your car class are experiencing like problems. Just ask what complaints your vechicle class has reported and they would be more than happy to provide you with that i nformation willingly. We are so afraid to drive our car at this point. So, with that said I will continue to report the truth hoping that something is done.

I want to see what they have to say about that. YouTube here I come.

I don't know the cause of the fire yet, my guess is that the problem is electrical since the fire was concentrated around the battery area but I could be wrong. I have not installed any aftermarket parts or accesory's, never drove on anything other than paved roads on flat terrene. The dealership is is investigating, and unless they give me the option to pay the difference in price on a new Wrangler I'm prepared to take legal action.

HOWEVER, it is for OVERSEAS MARKETS ONLY, not North America! We have information that Chrysler has authorized installation of this oil cooler in conjunction with warranty replacements of automatic transmissions here in the USA on a case by case basis. Obviously, Chrysler knows there is a serious defect but they continue to stonewall. All owners should consider having an aftermarket auxiliary transmission oil cooler installed. This will fix the problem permanently. DO NOT take a chance with this potential hazard. We expect the NHTSA will eventually order a recall of all auto trans JK Wranglers, to include either installation of a factory trans oil cooler, OR, refund of any cost owners' have incurred to have aftermarket coolers installed.

Smoke started pouring from behind the engine block near the transfer case on my 2008 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4WD manual transmission. Definitely smelled of burning transmission fluid. I immediately pulled off the hwy but left my hood down as to try to suffocate whatever was burning. Let my truck sit for over an hour then drove it 8 miles to a friends house. Managed to get home that night but my truck still reeks of smoke. Will be taking it to the dealer tomorrow and have informed him of the forum we have here and everyones post. This was the first time my jeep has been in the hills as I have driven it mostly in New Orleans where it there are none. I have 35000 miles but feel I may be in the same boat as all that have posted here already. I thanked God I didn't catch fire as I was sure I was mere seconds from it going up in flames. I am in the military and leave Tuesday for a sixth month deployment overseas. I will not even have time to deal with this completely but I do believe with so many reporting problems just in this chat that there are probably ten times as many that have not seen this forum or have chosen not to post. PLEASE IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS OR YOUR JEEP HAS SUDDENLY BURST INTO FLAMES ADD TO THIS BOARD SO THAT WE CAN INFORM THE SAFETY COMMISION.

Got out just in time. It is a total loss. Chrysler does not take responsibility. They say they found no manufacturing defect that caused the fire. The only thing they would tell me was the fire was caused from after market items. Any after market items were already on the vehicle when it was purchased. We did not have anything extra added. According to the dealership, these parts were Chrysler parts and would not have contributed to the fire. No one wants responsibility. I understand from other sources there was a recall on the transmission fluid overheating and causing problems. So we have a total loss brand new vehicle that we are still paying for, insurance will not cover total cost, down payment, deductible, items in vehicle at time of loss, or rental car out of pocket, as they should not have to. This was definitely a Chrysler problem. When is someone going to make them pay for their mistakes, after someone is dead?

Our 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara caught fire tonight and is a total loss. It was 6 months old and had 3200 miles on it. My husband was driving it home from work, smelled smoke, then saw flames and ran as it had a full tank of gas. The Wrangler is a total loss. We never would have bought one if we had known this was an issue.

Are these mainly automatics? Just king of wonering if jeeps have a wet clutch in them or not?

  • JesseDecember 6, 2010 at 12:52 am

This sounds very interesting and something that should be take care of at the factory. I am just wondering if there are any fixes known to work to prevent this problem and how much it costs. I am thinking about buying one of these! Or maybe not!

My 2008 jeep wrangler caught on fire wednesday nov. 24th 2010 and is a total loss.Flames shot up through the floor while I was driving. Wished I had known about the problems beforehand. My jeep had 40,000 miles on it. Don't know what caused the fire yet.

They said it was just a sensor but I'll be looking to get the service reciept to show what work was really done. this jeep had less than 400 miles and was less than a week owned. The jeep was a total loss; nothing left but the frame and some melted metal. If anyone is pursueing further action please let me know, I'm all in on this one. I had a trip planed for out of town planned for the next day with my family so that could have been a tragedy. Even though my insurance will more than likely pay for it I will never buy another jeep again.

I HAD a 2007 jeep wrangler unlimited that intmittenly burst into flames as i was driving down the highway. By the time i got stopped the carpet already began to smolder. The jeep was a total loss even though this happened about two years ago there was no recall and now there is i was wondering what would be the besat way to approach chrysler to get my loss of money back in my pocket???

  • stephenOctober 14, 2010 at 3:20 am

they should have to replace the transmission to.it is not right to do people like that .we pay a lot for a jeep to not last no longer than 50000 miles.that is stealing in my book.should be against the law.

Some one once told me there was no cover on the exaust or catalytic converter which I though was very odd for a off road vehicle but I don't know that for a fact. This is the first I have heard about any recalls.

Our 2010 JK burst into flames today while trying to get out of some mud...not deep. My husband was burned on his face and arms. Will keep you posted once we contact Chrysler/Jeep.

My 2008 jeep wrangler did the exact same thing on August 25th 2010. Its an outrage to spend so much on a seemingly nice vehicle, but have no support from chrysler whate so ever

There is a lot of footage of vehicles accross the product line burning. A police department purchased a fleet of Chrysler cars and could not put them into service because they kept catching on fire. They specified "persuit ready" on the purchase contract. Chrysler rep came out and saw this happen first hand and told them it was their fault because of the way they were driving them. Those cars never went into service. A lot of information here. http://www.dontbuydodgechryslervehicles.com/

Today, Saturday, September 18th, 2010, my 2dr Jeep Rubicon burst into flames whilst on a sand road, in Nevada, USA. Within 9 minutes it was burned to the ground - doors off, hood off, wheels melted.

Never heard of such a thing, they said. Called Chrysler Canada - they said take it to dealer. Took it to dealer - apparently the transmission fluid was burned black. They recommended flushing transmission and installing an external transmission cooler - - and quoted $700. Called Chrysler again and told them dealer's recommendations. I said - should be covered under warranty. They offered to pay labour only - I would have to buy cooler and fluid. I said - this is a design flaw - you only installed the hot oil light a few days ago, so how was I to know the fluid was overheating? I said, I see on the internet that these things have been catching fire. They said they'd get back to me - but haven't. Now I meet another guy in town here with a 2008 (only 6000 k on his) with exactly the same problem. We don't do serious off roading - just old logging roads that can be steep. No grinding through mud or rock crawling. And the light comes on in two wheel drive and four wheel. I was on a mountain road the other day, stopped when the light came on, and a PT cruiser cruised past me! The trail rated badge seems to be lying. Chrysler promised to get back to me three weeks ago and failed to do so. Can we not shame them in the media? I've just been reading about the numerous cases of jk's catching fire in China, with no apparent action from Chrysler. I am outraged!!

Chrysler is grossly negligent on this issue and is simply trying to stall for time, hoping enough of the affected vehicles will pass out of warranty that they can minimize cost exposure. The issue is overheated trans oil, not a deficient warning system, and Chrysler is doing nothing to fix the root defect, which is insufficient fluid capacity and cooling. The transmission oil cooler used on the JK is at the base of the A/C condenser, and is blocked by the bumper and body front crossmember. Aside from blocked airflow, it obviously has insufficient cooling capacity for the weight and intended use of these vehicles. Chrysler's recall notice clearly states that the trans oil can overheat "in severe usage conditions such as trailer towing, snow plowing or extreme off-road driving". That is, it can overheat in normal use of the vehicle! Envision this: a driver is towing a trailer within the capacity of the JK and ascending a long grade, like up to the Eisenhower Tunnel on I70. The "Hot Oil" warning goes off. Now what is the driver to do? Risk an accident to pull over and let it cool down, only to have it overheat again? The proper fix for this is for Chrysler to fit these vehicles with an adequate transmission fluid cooling system. I urge anyone experiencing this defect to 1) first have the recall completed to cover your liability, and 2) contact NHTSA and provide details of the fault. Tell them that Chrysler's recall does not fix the root cause of the problem and that your safety risk is not corrected by their recall. This whole issue and Chrysler's response is frankly an outrage.

Sure wish I had known about this sooner. I bought a 2007 4D jeep wrangler in March and before I could even get the oil changed (had it less than 3 months) it burst into flames on 6/29. I recieved a letter from Chrysler last week in which they promise to get back to me in 12 days. I sure hope they are willing to step up to the plate and do the right thing!

It was mentioned several times Chrysler had a group of reps. that it seems there sole purpose was to deny warranty claims. Then the fire issue that as far as I can see still has not been resolved. The JK was my first choice of vehicles, the FJ Cruiser was second and the Xterra was the third. In '08, I bought a new Xterra with the off road package. It takes me anywhere I want to go, now has 20k miles on it and not one visit to the dealer for any porblems. I don't have to worry about this vehicle bursting into flames. It is a sad and pathatic game Chrysler/Jeep is playing with peoples lives letting this problem go uncorrected for so long. Unfortunely, it is going to take a fatility (s) to get any real action on this.

My 2009 JK 2Dr, went up in flames on the 8th this month. I was driving down the highway, came off the ramp and right after the turn onto the street the car died. I got out looked underneath and saw flames. Maybe 5 minutes later the entire engine area was engulfed in flames. I dont know what happened, but I am sure that it has to do with what happened to your JK's. I havent contact Jeep yet.

The same thing has just happened to my 2007 JK Wrangler in Australia. My father was reversing the JK in his driveway when he heard three loud popping sounds. Next thing there is fire coming out of the radio and under his feet. he jumped out but the car is a write off. Really upset and pissed off and no reponse from Jeep Australia

My jeep just burned out earlier today. It was a 2008 4-door Sahara. We had been doing some off-roading and then all of the sudden it was on fire. It was a total loss, but we did salvage one of the aluminum wheels, which had melted into a molten puddle and then re-hardened.

I had the same thing happen to my 2009 4 door Jeep Rubicon. It had 8000 when it burst into flames. Chrysler is denying any responsibility and is refusing to pay. It took two weeks to get anything substantial out of them. At first they act like they care, then they put you off. John - the same thing happened to my 2008 4 door the day following yours (Nov 4). I contacted Chrysler, they told me the special investigating unit would contact me within 48 hours. I got a call from a man named Jay. He is going to have someone look at my vehicle and get back to me. Have you spoken with someone at Chrysler yet? And what has been determined in your case?

Cannot imagine what caused the fire, makes no sense.
