Disney Pogo Stick Recall: Fall and Laceration Hazard

Multiple reports of injuries suffered by children has led to a recall of Disney pogo sticks made by Bravo Sports. 

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the Disney pogo stick recall on July 29, indicating that the commission and Bravo Sports are aware of at least 82 reports of the bottom tip wearing out prematurely. At least five pogo stick riders have been injured, including one 9-year-old girl who suffered a skull fracture and another 9-year-old girl who needed stitches after cutting her lip and chin.

The CPSC has determined that the defective bottom rubber tip poses a fall hazard to consumers. The commission also found that the end caps on the handlebars were removable and the bars underneath had sharp edges that posed a laceration hazard.

The pogo stick recall affects about 159,000 pogo sticks distributed under a number of Disney character motifs, including Hannah Montana, Toy Story, Cars, Disney Princesses and Disney fairies. All of the recalled pogo sticks have Disney labels between the handlebars and manufacturing date codes between 01/01/2009-022CO and 11/30/2010-022CO are located on a clear label on the pogo stick’s stem, near the foot pedals.

The Disney brand name was licensed to Bravo Sports, of Santa Fe Springs, California, which actually manufactured the defective pogo sticks. This is the second major pogo stick recall for Bravo Sports this year. In March, about 169,000 Bravo Sports pogo sticks were recalled because pins holding the spring at the bottom of the sticks in place could break, which resulted in at least nine injuries.

The pogo sticks in the latest recall were sold at Burlington Coat Factory, Kmart, Target, Toys R Us and online at Kohls.com from February 2009 through June 2011 for about $20.
