Big Lots Reclinder Recall Issued Due to Child Neck Entrapment Risk

About 375,000 Big Lots glider recliners have been recalled after reports suggest they may cause toddlers’ necks to become trapped in the frame, resulting in a risk of serious and potentially life-threatening injury.

The Big Lots recliner recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on October 25, after receiving at least two reports of child entrapment. Both children were under the age of two and both were rescued without suffering a serious personal injury.

According to the CPSC, there is an exposed gap between the moving parts of the chair and the base framework that can allow infant and toddlers to become trapped.

In both of the reports received by the CPSC, the toddlers became caught between horizontal components of the frame at the back of the chair. The CPSC also believes that other moving parts of the gliders and the accompanying ottoman could pose a finger pinching and crushing risk for older children and adults.

The recall affects all Microfiber Glider Recliners with Ottomans and Leather Glider Recliners with Ottomans. Both the chairs and ottomans are on a circular metal base and covered with light brown or green microfiber fabric or dark brown fake leather. The affected chairs have a tag on the side identifying the manufacturer as Dongguan Shindin Metal & Plastic Products Ltd.

The chairs were sold exclusively at Big Lots stores nationwide from January 2005 through December 2009 for about $170 and were manufactured in China.

The CPSC recommends that consumers immediately stop using the chairs and contact Big Lots for a free repair kit that will cover the base framework and the moving parts of both the chair and the ottoman.
