Bextra, Celebrex Class Action Lawsuit for Investors Certified

A federal judge has granted class action status to an investor lawsuit brought against Pfizer over claims the company lied about the safety of Celebrex and Bextra, allegedly withholding information that the drugs caused heart problems.

On March 29, U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain ruled in New York that a Celebrex and Bextra investor class action lawsuit could proceed, certifying a class that includes all individuals who purchased Pfizer stock between October 31, 2000 through October 19, 2005.

Swain indicated that the creation of a class action lawsuit will help with court efficiency and allow plaintiffs to pool their resources.

The lawsuit was brought by investors who allege that Pfizer knowingly misrepresented information about the risk of side effects of Celebrex and Bextra causing cardiovascular problems.

Pfizer officials tried to block approval of the class action but failed. Company officials noted that the ruling does not address whether the case has merit.

Celebrex and Bextra are pain medications that were sold by Pfizer to millions of Americans.  Also known as COX-2 enzyme inhibitors, the drugs reduce pain and inflammation in the back and neck and pain from arthritis.  However, they have also been linked to increased cardiovascular risk, including heart attacks and strokes.

In 2008, Pfizer paid nearly $1 billion to settle Celebrex and Bextra lawsuits brought by plaintiffs who said they were injured by the drugs’ side effects.

Pfizer issued a Bextra recall in April 2005 after it was linked to heart attacks, strokes, blood clots and other injuries such as the Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), which is a serious and potentially fatal skin reaction. Celebrex is still on the market.

now that the class action suit has ended or the expiry past, is a person still able to file a suit against pfitzer for someone who had fallen under most of the guidelines such as purchase dates, but was not affected until 8 day’s after the class action lawsuit had closed?

I Have chest pain all the time , I take celebrex every day without knowing it’s killing me slowly but surely. I go to the emergency rooms and they said they don’t see anything but all the time they know all my medicines that I’m takeing but not one time over all of these years of taking celebrex that they would say it’s the celebrex that you are taking that’s causeing all of my chest pains. So instead they would leave me to believe that it’s all in my mine instead of the celebrex, and they be knowing exactly what it is that could be the cause and won’t even tell you.
