Hyundai Genesis Recall: Brake Module Corrosion Risk

Roughly 43,500 Hyundai Genesis sedans are being recalled after the manufacturer recognized that brake fluids may corrode the electric module controlling the brakes, posing a potential risk of accidents for drivers.  

The Hyundai Genesis recall (PDF) was announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on November 6, after a significant number of warranty claims were submitted by owners that indicated the Hydraulic Electric Control Unit (HECU) module had failed.

The recall appears to be an expansion of a prior recall for Hyundai Genesis sedans, which was announced on October 21 for only 27,500 vehicles. At the time that recall was announced, the company had received at least 23 complaints of Hyundai Genesis brakes failing, including at least one accident that occurred after the driver was unable to stop the vehicle.

After investigating the claims, Hyundai was able to determine that vehicles with specific manufacturer brake fluid may not effectively prevent corrosion on the zinc plating on the HECU module. Over time corrosion may create a gel buildup on the HECU module’s valves and affect the vehicle’s operation, specifically application and effectiveness of the brakes. There were no auto accident reports associated with the HECU module failures linked to this recall.

The recall now includes 2009 through 2012 model year Hyundai Genesis sedans manufactured between April 30, 2008 and March 28, 2012 by Hyundai Motor Company. The affected brakes and hydraulic fluid were purchased by Hyundai Motor Company from Continental Automotive Corporation of Korea.

Hyundai announced it will begin notifying owners by mail with instructions to take their vehicles to a dealer service. The service will include changing the manufacturer brake fluid and an inspection of the HECU module. If the vehicles HECU module has experienced corrosion all repairs will be free of charge.

Well….it is NOT just up to the 20012 model year ! My wife was driving ours (2013) last month & I noticed that it was pulling right when brakes were applied & asked her if the brakes were giving her a problem & she thought it was due to the car just “being serviced” BY THE DEALER ! I got in the drivers seat when on a less traveled road & got up to 55 MPH & applied brakes & THE CAR CHANGED LANES TO THE RIGHT ! Immediately called service mgr & he asked that we get it in to be checked. HECU due to brake fluid. Was given loaner (no chg) due to Hyundai CPO warranty coverage that took a week

My 2013 hyundai genesis 54000 miles blew up the rotor rod shatterdd the block and i could have gotten hurt hyundai said the oil was bad which is incorrect now i had to purchase another vehicle and i am out 50 k i want my money back this is rediculous. Never buy hyundai their garbage i cAnt believe they wont stand behind warranty
