IKEA Children’s Lamp Recall Issued After Infant Strangles in Crib

|

Following the death of a 16-month old child who strangled on the cord of a wall-mounted lamp, a recall has been issued for nearly 23 million lamps sold exclusively at IKEA.

The IKEA wall mounted lamp recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on December 11, following the infant death and at least one other report that another toddler became tangled in the 7 foot long power cord. In both incidents the infants were able to pull the cord into their crib, causing the strangulation hazard.

The CPSC has determined that the lamps pose a serious strangulation hazard due to the long electrical cord used to run a source of power to the wall outlets. The risks are that children can pull the cords into the crib and become entangled in them.

The affected lamps measure about 11 inches high by 11 inches wide and have a 7-foot electrical cord with an in-line power switch that connects to a 25-watt light bulb. The lamps have the model name and article number printed on the inside of the lamp near the bulb and on the lamp’s packaging.

The products were manufactured in the United States, Lithuania, and China where they were sold exclusively at IKEA stores nationwide as well as in IKEA’s catalog and online at ikea-usa.com from July 1999 through May 2013 for between $10 and $13 dollars. IKEA estimates to have sold 2.9 million in the U.S., 1.1 million in Canada, and the rest were sold worldwide.

The CPSC is calling for customers to stop using the recalled lamps immediately and contact IKEA at (888) 966-4532 or visit them online at www.ikea-usa.com and navigate to the recall link to receive a free repair kit. IKEA has announced plans to provide customers with self-adhesive fasteners for attaching the lamps cord to the wall and a safety instructions manual. IKEA is urging customers to not use the lamps again until the repair kit has been installed.
