Office Depot Chair Recall Issued Following Reports of Injuries

Roughly 1.4 million office chairs sold by Office Depot have been recalled, after the manufacturer received at least 153 reports that the seats failed, causing more than two dozen injuries.  

An Office Depot Gibson Leather Task Chairs recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on May 22, following reports of the seat weld plate cracking resulting.

At least 25 injury reports have been associated with the recalled office chairs, including abrasions and contusions to the head, back, and neck. At least one incident resulted in a fractured hip.

The CPSC has determined that the chairs pose a fall and laceration risk.

The recall includes Office Depot Gibson leather task chairs with SKU number 105479 and registration numbers PA 27248 (CN), PA 25498 (CN), PA 25276 (HK) or CA 35181 (RC). The chairs are armless and made of a black leather material and have a black plastic base with five wheels. The SKU and registration numbers can be located on a label located under the seat next to the words “Made in China”.

The products were manufactured in China under Victory Land Ent. Co., Ltd., of Taiwan and Wonderful Year Co., Ltd; China Power Flamingo Ltd.; and Anji Wanan Furniture Co., Ltd. of China and imported by Office Depot, Inc., of Boca Raton, Fla. and by Swinton Avenue Trading. The products were sold exclusively at Office Depot retail stores nationwide and online by various distributors from 2003 through 2012 for about $40.

The CPSC recommends that customers with recalled task chairs stop using them immediately and return them to any Office Depot store location for a $55 store merchandise credit.
