Beech Nut Baby Food Recall Issued Over Glass Contamination Fears

Following report of at least one injury, nearly 2,000 pounds of Beech-Nut baby food have been recalled due to a risk that it may contain small pieces of glass. 

A Beech-Nut sweet potato & chicken recall was announced by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on April 14, after the manufacturer received a complaint involving an oral injury resulting from a fragment of glass in one of the bottles of baby food.

According to a Beech-Nut press release, there is no evidence any other jar has been affected, but the company issued the recall out of an abundance of caution.

Glass fragments in the baby food could cause infants to suffer lacerations to the mouth and lips, or could cause internal injuries or choking if swallowed.

The recall affects 1,920 pounds of “Stage 2 Beech-Nut CLASSICS sweet potato & chicken” sold in four-ounce glass jars. The affected bottles have establishment number P-68A inside the USDA mark of inspection, have an expiration date of “DEC 2016” and includes product numbers “12395750815” through “12395750821”.No other flavors, production dates, or sizes are affected.

The recalled baby food was sold nationwide.

Beech-Nut is encouraging customers to return the recalled baby food to the place of purchase for a full refund or exchange. Consumers can also call the company at (866) 674-4446 to receive a full refund as well.

Anyone who believes their baby has eaten the recalled baby food should contact their medical professional.
