Federal health officials have announced a recall impacting more than 200 million eggs distributed in at least nine states, after they were linked to reports of salmonella food poisoning.

The recall includes about 206,749,248 eggs produced by Rose Farms of Seymour, Indiana, which were distributed for sale from the farm in Hyde County, North Carolina to retail stores and restaurants in Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia

The affected containers are marked with the plant number P-1065 and have the Julian date range of 011 through 102 printed on either side portion or the principal side of the carton or package. For a full list of the recalled products please visit the official FDA recall notice.

According to the FDA, officials began receiving reports of salmonella infection among individuals on the East Coast. After traceback investigation and interviews with sickened individuals, the agency was able to determine the likely source of the outbreak.

The FDA performed a thorough inspection of the Hyde County farm facility that contains roughly 3 million laying hens which produce 2.3 million eggs a day. Out of an abundance of caution, Rose Acre Farms voluntarily recalled certain egg production ranges to prevent further illnesses.

Salmonella infections can cause mild to severe health consequences depending upon the individual. The bacteria may cause a healthy person to experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain whereas the young or elderly with weakened immune systems may face more severe consequences, including fatal infections.

Among pregnant women, salmonella poisoning may cause still births and miscarriages. Occasionally, salmonella infections may travel through the bloodstream and produce illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis, which can cause severe to potentially life threatening health consequences.

Customers are being asked to stop consuming the recalled eggs, and restaurants and retailers have been asked to discontinue the use and or sale of the eggs immediately. Customers should return the recalled eggs to their place of purchase for a full refund or contact the company at 855-215-5730 for additional questions or concerns regarding the recall.
