AT&T Is Sending Notice of Data Breach Letters, Offering Only Limited Fraud Protections

ATT-Data-Breach-Email-Notice

Following a significant data breach at AT&T several years ago, which compromised the personal information, Social Security numbers and email addresses of more than 70 million customers, the company is just starting to send notice letters and emails to customers. However, the AT&T data breach letters only offer customers limited identity fraud protections and credit monitoring.

Although hackers gained access to the AT&T data as early as August 2021, and publicly posted customer information on the dark web months ago, the telecom giant has only recently begun sending a Notice of Data Breach letters (PDF) to current and former customers, informing some of those impacted that their information has been compromised.

Within the AT&T Notice of Data Breach letters and emails, customers are being told they only have until the end of August 2024 to use an activation code to create a free Experian credit monitoring membership, which will only last for one year before the individual must take on the expense themselves. However, customers whose personal information was stolen are expressing their concerns across social media platforms, claiming the AT&T credit monitoring offer of only one year is inadequate, and that the potential for damage from such a breach extends well beyond the span of a single year.

As a result, a growing number of are now filing AT&T data breach lawsuits, which seek substantially greater financial compensation for customers, alleging that their information was released due to a massive failure by AT&T to properly and adequately secure customer names, Social Security number and other data.

In this featured post, AboutLawsuit.com provides some samples of the notices customers received from AT&T about the data breach, which outline steps that can be taken to take advantage of the free credit monitoring.

In addition, customers who received the notice can fill learn more about how to sign up for the AT&T data breach lawsuit  here, or fill out the form at the bottom of this post to find out if they may qualify to pursue an AT&T data breach settlement through a class action lawsuit or individual arbitration claim.

AT&T Notice of Data Breach Security Update

AT&T began notifying both current and former customers affected by the data breach through emails sent several weeks ago, and reports suggest that AT&T data breach letters started to be sent around April 25, 2024.

Mass emails have been sent to millions of current AT&T phone and internet customers from ATT@message.att-mail.com, which detailed how their account passcodes had been automatically reset. However, many of those AT&T data breach notice emails were caught in spam filters or did not reach individuals whose personal information was exposed.

The notices encouraged customers to update their passcodes as a precaution by visiting their site and following the series of directions below;

  1. Go to your myAT&T Profile. Sign in, if asked. (If you have extra security enabled and can’t sign in, choose Get a new passcode).
  2. Scroll to My linked accounts.
  3. Select Edit for the passcode you want to update.
  4. Follow the prompts to finish up.

AT&T also recommended that the customers take certain steps to remain vigilant by monitoring their account activity and credit reports, and that individuals whose information was confirmed to be stolen would be offered free credit monitoring services for a limited time.

AT&T Data Breach Experian Credit Monitoring Notice

For many customers whose information was confirmed to be stolen and posted on the dark web, additional notices were sent by email and mailed letter, explaining;

  • What Happened
  • What Information was stolen
  • What AT&T is Doing
  • What you can do, and
  • How to receive free one year credit monitoring

How to Sign Up For Free AT&T Experian Credit Monitoring?

Within the notice of data breach, AT&T indicates that it will provide customers whose information was stolen and posted on the dark web a one year free Experian IdentifyWorks membership to monitor fraudulent activity.

The service includes an insurance policy with coverage up to $1 million. This policy can help cover costs associated with recovering from identity theft. Such costs might include legal fees, lost wages, or other expenses directly related to restoring a stolen identity.

Customers are being instructed that they have until August 30, 2024 to sign up for their Experian IdentifyWorks membership before their activation code expires permanently.

AT&T Data Breach Lawsuits Seek Additional Damages and Credit Monitoring

AT&T’s offer of merely one year of credit monitoring has been widely criticized as insufficient by victims, who argue that the potential for damage extends far beyond this limited timeframe.

Several AT&T data breach lawsuits filed to date outline how the risks associated with data breaches are enduring and can emerge years after the initial incident, and that AT&T customers who have been compromised are entitled to actual damages, extended credit monitoring, and other monetary relief.

The situation is further complicated by AT&T customer experiences reported by some individuals, who have already suffered identity theft and fraud as a direct result of the breach. Many of these victims are seeking legal representation to pursue compensation for their actual damages, which include both out-of-pocket expenses incurred from dealing with the fraud and the broader financial impacts.

AT&T Class Action Lawyers Reviewing Cases Nationwide

Given common questions of fact and law raised in a growing number of AT&T lawsuits being filed throughout the federal court system, a motion to transfer (PDF) was filed with the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) late last month, requesting claims filed throughout the federal district court system be consolidated for pretrial proceedings before one judge as part of an AT&T data breach lawsuit MDL (multidistrict litigation).

As the size and scope of the litigation continues to increase, AT&T data breach lawyers are providing free consultations and claim evaluations for individuals who have had their identifies stolen or suffered losses due to the AT&T data breach.

To determine whether you or a loved one may be eligible for an AT&T data breach lawsuit settlement, submit information about your potential claim for review by a lawyer to determine whether a settlement or lawsuit payout may be available. There are no fees or expenses unless a recovery is obtained in your case.

I received my letters back in March from AT &T about the data breach. First came the letter from United Healthcare, lastly came a letter from Victoria Eye Center. Our personal information just isn’t safe with any company.

Rickey
My phone will not stop ringing. Answer the freaking phone & the P.O.S hangs up & calls from different number. Saying that payment has been declined when I haven’t bought anything online in a while. Emails emails emails. I bet I have at least 500 scam emails. Multiple. I mean multiple emails wanting money because payment declined crazy. I pay my bills no reason for payment declined email. I assumed it was junk mail but I get them on all 3 of my accounts. Now I now why this has been happening. I had no idea that ATT had been hacked. So much for info security.

I had a women call me and she informed me she was with Social Security Administration and I trusted and believed her after she stated to me on the phone all my personal information: phone number , date of birth , mother’s maiden name and more . She led me to believe to go get 2 loans and to buy 2 money packs and send her the numbers off money pack to turn in to social security so I can get a increase in pay in January and it showed I was making monthly payments to 2 loan companies, well did I find out she lied and I was a victim of identity theft and scammed and not I am paying over $8000 in loan payments and victim of identity theft thanks to AT@T , She told me after everything was Done for me to thank AT@T. !!! So AT@T needs to pay up every Dam Customer for there horrible mistake of NO PROTECTION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jerry

Everyday is a new report of another company and their data breach. The horrible joke is that we the consumers are supposed to be grateful and relieved to be given free monitoring for a year. What a slap in the face. “Our systems are secure, you’ve nothing to worry about. Your data is safe with us”… THEN these corporations are allowed to admit no fault as long as they pay big money. IMHO, it IS their faults. And if we accept the payout then that bars us from being able to use later on. Everyday we are hung out to dry and not properly compensated.

Seven days ago multiple scammers have have been calling texting my numbers even voice messages threatening to put a lien on my car garnish my wages since they confirmed on the 1st phone call that they have my drivers license number social security number my name and address. I am paying for credit monitoring in addition to the AT&T Experian credit monitor. Honestly it’s a nightmare to constantly have scammers threatening to sue for unknown activities they creates to get me to send them money or they will have me sued by they’re law firm. They are calling from different states.

Robert
I have been trying for 3 days to activate this service. Nothing works. This is total Bullshit!!

Richard
Everything’s a sham we went through this with the Experian date of breach years ago everybody was going to get up to $125 compensation and and a year of monitoring and in the end three years later we get a monitoring what does that do , it monitors but it doesn’t do anything and by now everybody is either in North Korean Russian Chinese websites it doesn’t matter so give up the money, we pay a lot every month services and what do we get back. 0 nada big Zero. So AT&t takes in 50 billion but to settle they they settle for 5 million wow I’m sure that really hurts them and then in the end they take that 5 million as a tax write-off that they had to pay out so who benefits you know

Luberta
Tired calls and texting all day and weekends also.

Ellen
My cell phones rings NONSTOP!I even got on the no call list & I get at least 8 to 10 AN HR! I had my debit hacked & 2 credit cards!

Denise
I was notified from one of my credit monitoring services. Otherwise I would not have known. I watch the news, guess I missed it. All my info- everything is now on the dark web. Source ATT March 18, 2024. I locked all credit profiles. Trans, experien and Equifax. Locked all credit cards. I have to get all new bank account numbers and CC numbers. And then one by one call every creditor to change my online banking info. This is a nightmare. I have Experian credit monitoring but it was another source I pay for that froze my Experian profile and notified me of all the details.

Deborah J
I did receive the letter from AT&t but have tried several times to sign up for the free service to no avail. Every time I call they give me a a new activation code and they say it’s incorrect. I am at a loss for words and upset because it’s so hard to do what needs to be done. Are they going to send us a new letter that will actually go through & us up for the free service for a year? I wonder…

Tyesha

I’ve been dealing with being on the dark web over yrs., now. I’m worried every day. I receive notification after notification of of my personal info. compromised. I change my debit card often, I constantly have to check everything. I have switched to iPhone and back to Android. It’s ridiculous how much I have to worry about my private information. I don’t answer my phone because of the worries, etc.. NO one should have to live their lives over personal info. being stolen and used to hurt them when you work so hard to try and make a good living situation for yourself and your family. This world is already corrupt enough to just step out in public. My wife/separated now but still best of friends has mental health issues because of this world. My identity is all over the place and the love of my life is suffering badly. I’m however strong enough to keep pushing for myself, while maintaining to keep a positive outlook for my best friend (wife), I love and appreciate. And it’s all over everything in the case you speak of. Help me and help the rest of the people in this lawsuit, please….

I paid for a million dollar policy that I paid $19.99 per month to Experian. I took out the policy in 2019 through November 2023. It was sold to me under the guise of protecting my data. I have had the data breach from hell, my disabled son has had his breached, my daughter, niece, nephew and my in-home health care burse had her data nreached also. I tried disputes, emails, fraud alerts, and freezes to my credit reports as suggested. Which were were rejected back to me as resolved with the thiefs winning normally. So I took it upon myself to research everyone of the fraudulent activites and guess what I got most resolved myself with letters stating that they were fraudulent. I would not trust Experian, Equifax or Transunion as far as I could throw them. That has been my own experience. My credit is a total disaster. It will be wrecked for years if not forever. And yes I had AT&T service before 2020.

Allan

This is really scary knowing someone have all of your personal information & I’m very upset. People have so many scamming going on and I’m very worried about this situation. Also at&t should do more for the customer like give us a year of service for the inconvenience. Along with paying us customer’s some money for this terrible situation.

Brenda
