ATV Rider’s Concussion Leads to Massive 509-Brand Helmet Recall

ATV Rider's Concussion Leads to Massive 509-Brand Helmet Recall

A massive recall has been issued for more than 200,000 helmets sold by Polaris and 509, due to a risk that they may fail to protect riders during a crash.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) posted information about the helmet recall on July 3, following a reported incident in which one of the defective helmets detached during an ATV accident, resulting in a rider suffering a concussion.

The recalled helmets were sold under the “509” and “509 for Polaris” brand names, and were designed for snowmobiling and off-road riding, using fiberglass composite or carbon fiber to offer both strength and lightweight performance. However, if the helmet detaches during a crash, it can leave riders exposed to serious injuries or even death.

A total of 201,200 helmets sold in the U.S. and another 26,800 sold in Canada are impacted by the recall, which affects a wide range of 509 and 509 for Polaris models. This includes the Tactical 3.0 Youth, Mountain and Trail versions, as well as the 509 for Polaris Tactical 3.0 Youth and Mountain models.

The recall also covers small and medium-sized 509 Tactical 2.0 helmets, 509 Tactical 2.0 helmets with Fidlock closures, and 509 for Polaris Tactical 2.0 helmets manufactured in 2023.

In addition, helmets equipped with Fidlock closures and stainless steel glide bars are included in the recall. Affected models include the Tactical 2.0, Altitude 2.0, Delta R3L, Delta R4, Delta V, Mach III, Mach IV and Mach V, manufactured between 2020 and 2025.

The helmets bear either the “509” logo and “FIVE O NINE” branding, or the “509” and “Polaris” logos for the co-branded models. All were manufactured in China and sold between January 2020 and May 2025 through www.ride509.com, www.polaris.com, and authorized dealers nationwide, with retail prices ranging from $140 to $900.

Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled helmets immediately. Both 509 and Polaris are contacting known purchasers directly with information about how to receive a remedy.

Customers with recalled 509-branded Tactical 3.0 or Tactical 2.0 helmets should contact 509 directly for recall instructions and choose between a refund, a website credit, or a replacement helmet. Those with 509 for Polaris-branded Tactical 3.0 or Tactical 2.0 helmets should contact Polaris to receive either a refund, a credit for use at a dealership or on the Polaris website, or a replacement. Proof of purchase is not required to participate.

After receiving confirmation and following the provided destruction instructions, consumers should dispose of the affected helmets in their regular household trash.

For recalled 509 and 509 for Polaris helmets equipped with Fidlock closures, Polaris is also offering guidance on how to inspect the chin strap webbing to ensure it is properly positioned and safe to use.
