Bassinet Recall Issued by Burlington Basket Due to Fall Risk

About 500,000 Burlington Basket bassinets have been recalled after at least two infants were reportedly hurt when the bassinets collapsed.

The Burlington Basket bassinet recall was announced on February 16 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) following 10 reports of the bassinets collapsing, including at least two cases where infants suffered minor injuries from the collapsing bassinets, including a bruised head and a bruised shoulder.

The bassinets have cross-bracing rails that have to be placed in the locked position for the bassinets to stay up. For the rails and folding legs to lock the end tabs must be fully inserted through holes on the leg assembly and twisted a quarter turn into a locked position. The CPSC believes the collapses were caused because the folding legs were not locked into place.

The recall affects all Burlington Basket Company bassinets manufactured before June 2010. The bassinet recall only affects those models that have folding legs that are attached to the basket with white plastic pins. Other models are not affected.

The baskets were sold at Wal-Mart, department stores, juvenile product stores and online, including through Amazon.com, for about $50 from January 2003 through August 2010.

The CPSC recommends that customers immediately stop using the bassinets and make sure that the cross-bracing support rails are in the locked position. The Burlington Basket Company is offering a free kit with detailed instructions on how to properly assemble the cross-bracing support. Returning the bassinet is not necessary.

Customers can see a video on proper assembly at http://burlingtonbasket.org/BASSINETRECALL.aspx, or can call Burlington Basket Company at 1-800-553-2300.
