Can-Am Commander ATV Recall Issued Over Steering Problems January 11, 2013 Russell Maas Add Your Comments About 3,400 Can-Am Commander side-by-side off road vehicles have been recalled due steering problems, which could cause drivers to lose control. The Can-Am Commander ATV recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on January 10, after the manufacturer, BRP Mexico S.A. de C.V., received at least three reports indicating the driver lost steering control. However, there have been no injuries or ATV accidents reported in connection with the recalled Can-Am Commander models. According to the CPSC, the problem is due to improper assembly of the steering column to the rack and pinion. This causes loss of steering control, posing a risk of serious injury or death to the user, passenger or bystanders. Gordon August 16, 2015 I have a 2012 Commander XT 1000, and have had it approximately 3 years. Have not had any major issues until 2 weeks go when after jump the right front tire snapped causing it to flip and roll around 5 or 6 times. The roll bar held up even though it bent but 2 feet to the right. The frame on the right side is bent and lots of broken fiberglass. I called BP in reference to the recall and was told mine was not on the recall list. When the commander come down there was no control of the steering wheel which caused it to go to the left snapping the front axle and causing it to start flipping. Now I have a totaled commander Kevin December 16, 2014 I have a 2012 Can Am Commander 1000. This Can Am Commander 1000 was manufactured in Mexico on 8/2012 which falls in the time frame of the recall but my model number is not on the recall that Can Am issues on 12/2012 and Can Am refuses to fix the problem. On 12/14/14 I had the issue of steering lose while riding in the woods and hit a tree. I have called BRP “Can Am” and they will not help. All they say is call your local dealer. I have called several Can Am dealerships and they say there have been several incidents with this year model of Can Am but Can Am doesn’t cover it because that model number is not included in the recall that Can Am issued. This is practically a new bike with 87 hours and 500 miles. Bet when there’s a fatality with this Can Am model BRP will change their mind. I will never buy another BRP “Can Am” product again.
