OVERVIEW: A fire in the aft engine room of the Carnival Splendor, a Carnival Cruise Lines vessel, left the ship without power and adrift about 200 miles south of San Diego, California while on a Mexican Riviera cruiser. Some passengers said that the crew did not inform them of the extent of the fire, which took four hours to put out. Some said they were told there was no fire, even as passengers were driven from hallways by thick clouds of smoke.

The loss of power left the ship without the ability to refrigerate food, air conditioning, and power for most of the ship’s systems. Auxiliary power left passengers with limited amenities and light.

Relief supplies were flown in from a nearby aircraft carrier and included Spam, Pop Tarts and canned crabmeat. The passengers propped their cabin doors open to get relief from the heat and to let emergency lighting from the hall seep into their rooms.

In addition to the inconvenience and loss of the cruise, Carnival Splendor passengers may be entitled to compensation for damages associated with the incident. This could include physical injuries caused by the lack of amenities and other consequential damages.
