Darvon and Darvocet Recall Issued Due to Risk of Heart Problems

The popular painkillers Darvocet and Darvon have been recalled by the FDA after it was determined that all medications containing the painkiller propxyphene pose an unreasonable risk of heart problems.ย

The Darvocet and Darvon recall was announced Friday afternoon by the FDA and Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which manufactures the popular pain medications. All generic Darvocet and generic Darvon versions of the medication have also been recalled.

Darvon was first introduced in 1957, containing propoxyphene to relieve mild to moderate post-surgical pain. Today it is most commonly prescribed as Darvocet, which combines the active ingredient in Darvon with acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol.

Darvocet has become one of the 25 most commonly prescribed medications, which has been prescribed to more than 22 million people.

An FDA advisory panel first recommended that the agency recall Darvocet and Darvon in February 2009, after determining that the minimal pain relief benefits provided by the drugs do not outweigh the substantial risk of overdose and suicide. However, the FDA decided in July 2009 to allow the medications to remain on the market with a new “black box” warning about Darvon and Darvocet side effects, which is the most stringent warning label possible under federal regulations.

On Friday, the FDA determined that new clinical data, which show that side effects of Darvocet include an increased risk of serious and sometimes fatal heart rhythm abnormalities, tipped the scales in favor of a recall, after determining that the risks associated with Darvocet and Darvon outweigh the benefits provided by the treatment.

The FDA indicates that it has been petitioned to recall Darvocet and Darvon from the market twice since 1978, but only now determined that the risks outweighed the benefits. One of those petitions came from Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group, which called for a Darvocet and Darvon recall in 2006.

A phased Darvon and Darvocet recall is already underway in the European Union.

โ€œWith the new study results, for the first time we now have data showing that the standard therapeutic dose of propoxyphene can be harmful to the heart,โ€ said Dr. Gerald Dal Pan, director of the FDAโ€™s Office of Surveillance and Epidemiology. โ€œHowever, long-time users of the drug need to know that these changes to the heartโ€™s electrical activity are not cumulative. Once the patient stops taking propoxyphene, the risk will go away.โ€

The FDA said in its announcement that it will advise health care professionals to stop prescribing Darvon and Darvocet to patients and said patients currently taking the drugs should contact their health care professional as soon as possible to discuss switching to another pain medication.

i have taken darvocet since 72,i am not dead yet from darvocet,it is a easier pain medication to take,it is a lot milder than the other pain meds..i have done very well on darvocet,i dont know any other pain med i can take and function, the other pain meds have worse side effects, leave our mild pain meds alone…take oxycotin off the market, count the people oxcotin has killed.

I’ve been taking DCN-100 for 34 years off & on for various pain(cramps, arthritis ect) It works for me without side effects. I’m a nurse-been giving this med for years with no ill effects. My question “who’s making money off of this decision?!” Come on folks! Does the FDA have stock in the Lortab co.?? My Dad’s been taking it since it came out-can’t take anti-inflammatories cause of stomach probs. Lawyers & drug co make the money off of these recalls & us poor folks have to either deal with the pain or change to another med!! Where’s Jesse Ventura!?!

Ron
The only non invasive medicine for pain that has no harsh side effects and in low dosses can still allow you to function at work is- Marijuana. Not some chemical replacement either- those are killing people. If you are in pain and this recall has affected you. Write your local legislation, sign up for Indiana Norml, and stand with us to get a natural God created medicine Re-legalized(1937). Hemp protien was made for our bodies. Read it for yourself. We could actually servive for years on 4T of hemp protien powder- Why do you think God made it for?

I have been on Darvocet for 25 years for pain (I have MS, DDD, spinal stenosis–you get the pic); as others have stated–this med doesn’t completely take the pain away, but it has been the only thing that did not upset my stomach (tried those others w/codeine, ugh); allows me to function like a human being; and I HAVE HAD NOT ONE PROBLEM with this med. Don’t like this situation we have been thrown in. I believe these deaths were not caused by this medication, but the individuals had another underlying cause and it’s a way to get money from the drug companies.

I was prescribed Darvocet 1 1/2 years ago for back pain. I have been having rapid heart rate, shortness of breath and dizziness.

jessica
i was given darvocet for back pain. I never had panic attacks or anything else until i took the pill. Now i constantly have nerve problems and panic attacks, along with anxiety.

I have been taking Darvocet since the 90’s and had to up it to Darvocet-Acetimitophen. What have people died of?? What am I supposed to do now? Why didn’t anyone tell me?? I have chronic pain and fatigue which I have everyday and I get through the day only with the Darvocet. How will my body react when I have been on it since the 90’s I am very panicy and scared of how I will get through this.

Wow just getting the news about Darvocet. I had surgery in August and have been taking this drug for 3 + months. Recently my heart rate started to rise, leaving me short of breath and having chest pains. I went to the doctor and am going through all the test for a heart condition. I am 46 years old and have taken Darvocet over the years for various reasons. Now I’m wondering why I have not been warned about this in the past.Today I was sent an email from a lawyer concerning a class action law suite. That is NOT the way patients should be given information concerning the potiential threat of a medication. I will be talking to my health care provider tomorrow.

Exactly when are people going to get it hteir heads that THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A SAFE MEDICATION ?? We might as well start suing peanut farmers for growing peanuts that kill people from chocking on them and those who die from being allergic to them

I’ve taken Darvocet since 1968, for headache, and once took 12 Darvocet 100’s per day for two weeks for herniated disk. It worked well, and there was no withdrawal when I stopped. 2000 deaths over 50 years with 22 million patients seems a bit low to cause much worry. It is more likely that some powerful legal groups are looking to replenish the supply of class lawsuits as some of the others are being milked dry. There are no drugs that both work, and have no risk or side effects for anyone.

I have been taking Darvocet for 10 years for Lupus. It has worked well for me, and I have had no problems. I had not even heard of this recall until I went to pick up my medication from Walmart, and they said that they no longer sell it. They said all other pharmacies they know of have also stopped selling. Now I have to call the doctor and find out what option is available. Have been on every other med from oxycodone to fentanol. The side effects from them were extreme for me.

If you listen to all the drug related ads on TV, you wonder why they would even market the drugs. Darvon and Darvocet never did work for me; aspirin was just as good, but I was first prescribed this medication in the early 70’s I think. So NOW they decide it’s bad for you? Reminds me of a family friend who died a few years ago at 101. He smoked and drank all of his life, and the first thing people said when they heard he was gone was that the cigarettes finally got him. If 22 Million people take it and 2000 have died in 50+ years, why not let the pt. decide if they should take it? Automobiles should have this good a track record!

Lynne
Who cares about a few palpitations when I Need pain relief? This ban on darvocet is ridiculous. I’d rather die without the crippling pain than live in constant agony. You people who don’t react well on the drug; don’t take it anymore. Don’t complain that others shouldn’t have it because you don’t want it. Grow up

Paula
In 2009 my orthopedic had me take Darvocet for knee pain. Over the course of six months now, I’ve had heart palputations that lasted over an hour going at the rate of 168+ per minute. After a trip to ER, I was told this is not common to have palputations, sent me home. The next few days, another attack. That time I didn’t go to the ER but called my doctor the next day. A referral to cardiologist and a long list of heart tests later, I still have them. Puzzle to the heart doctor as well and never once asked me if I was taking Darvocet/Darvon. Not even yesterday when I went to see him. Next Monday, we will have a chat because this is a scary thought to think I could just fall over and die.

Karen
I’m so discouraged. I am 35 and have taken darvocet for over a year now for bulging thoracic disks and muscle spasm related pain. I have had surgery, and now doctors say more surgery will not necessarily help. In the meantime, I’m supposed to take darvocet so can at least 1/2 way function at my job and be a mother of 3. What do I do? I don’t want to take more addictive drugs, and most make me sick to my stomach anyway. I could cry.

Clarence
I have been taking Darvocet for arthritis pain now for over 12 years and have had no ill effects yet. I take 2 daily and it is the only thing that has worked for me. Sure hope they get this straightend out soon.

Patricia
My mother is 103. Has been taking Darvocet since she lost her leg at 95. She only takes it at night when she has phantom pain from her missing leg. She has never had a problem with the drug, but it is also the only drug that helps. I don’t know what will happen to her now. Think it is pretty stupid to take it off the market without warning. I found out when I took her prescription from the doctor to the pharmacy yesterday that it had been recalled.

Pamela
Share information you wish to be published on this page…I have taken Darvocet for over 11 years and never had any probblems. I have Fibromyalgia and it helps my pain so i can function. it doesnt hurt my stomach like other pain meds. Now i cant take it. Im really upset that i have to take another pain killer that does upset my stomach and make me drowsy.

MARTHA
I have been on Darvocet N 100 for over 30 years. Since I am on Coumadin it is the best pain reliever for me. It makes me able to have a pain free day. I see a Pain Medicine Doctor and she evens would like me to take it more each day . However, I take one in the am and that will hold me until dinner. The other alternatives are much nore addictive and have more side effects. I hope they reconsider this decision. I am not addicted to it and have had no ill effects from it in all these years.

Kathy
I have been on Darvon 65mg (1-2) every 2 hours as needed. I have very painful CLEAR stents (they only show up in ultrasound-maybe) in both kidneys and ureters since Jan 1998, It wasn’t until I started proppoxyphene 65mg (2 only equal 130mg) that I got any relief without any side effects that the other drugs have and allow me to function as much as I can, because I need to never forget how I can move to prevent these stents from bending (the pain was so great that I passed out 2x) or they can even poke thru causing me to bleed to death!!! HELP !!!

Betty
I have taken Darvacet for four years, and never had 1 side effect? I have small chlidren to take care of and the only other medicine I will take would be Lortab7.5 to replace the 2 darvacet a day that I have be prescribed.

Kelly
I have been taking Darvocet for some time to ease the pain of my fibromyalgia. Is there another drug that is comparable as far as how it works? I’v found the Darvocet to be a lifesaver for me. What are the statistics that they are basing these “facts” on? Also, I understand that some countried took this off of their markets years ago? What was it that they found??

gelliott
I am of the same mind as diane. I can’t take anything else or I wouldn’t be able to function. It cuts the edge off my pain. It doesn’t take it completely away but that’s not surprising since what would will knock me on my behind. I have taken the generic version of Darvocet N 100 off and on for probably 11 years for anything from fibromyalgia, spinal fusion, cervical fusion and other spinal ailments. I have had no adverse affects.

Chris
I have been on darvoect n 100 for over a year now as a break thew pain medication. When I was put on it I was warned about the side effects that could damage my heart, and was told to only take as needed. Which means no more then 6 pills a day….. Recently I have had major stomach issues taking the medication and had to be put on Zofran to be able to keep taking it. My only other option for pain medications is Morphine which I do not want to be put on. Iwas on the phone with a friend when I found out about to recall or I wouldnt have known…… One of the comments posted above about the loss of a child. It never gets easier. The pain never goes away. You just get better at dealing with it over time. But the pain is always there. My daughter died in 92 So I understand how she is feeling

Donald
After taking PROPOXN-100/APAP650 I started to have bouts of abdominal and upper back pain.

My husband dropped dead in 2007 at the age of 35 years old. The autopsy report stated cause of death was sudden cardiac death. He had been on Darvocet after having knee surgery 3 months earlier. Now I’m wondering if his death was due to the Darvocet.

Debi
Taken darvocet for 4 1/2 yrs for pain after auto accident. Last few yrs had heart related issues and testing came up as no problem. I’m sitting here now tonight with a racing heartrate and heard about this from FOX News this am. Recently taking aspirin as pre-requirement for Niaspam (cholesterol lowering) med and I love my coffee daily. So, the combo of darvocet/aspirin/caffeine are now bad for me. Also, take Lyrica which helps from muscle pain. The combination lf Lyrica/Davrocet was working but now must STOP! Who wants heart problems at 58 yrs.

elizabeth
I took darvocet for three months and I have been having a lot of irregular heart beats and not feeling well. I’m very afraid that i have some damage due to taking darvocet. What do I do or who do I consult with?

sms
I have been taking Darvocet N100 for 26 years. There are too many health problems to go into now but this medication works for me. How can they pull a med with no advanced warning to patients using the drug? I think this is another Celebrex situation. They pulled Celebrex and the backlash was so great, I think they put it back on the market. It took 53 years for them to come to the conclusion this med was dangerous. Have you heard some of the side effects of new meds flooding the airwaves every day. Some of them can give you TB and are fatal and those are allowed. Why can’t the government pull out of our lives for once? We know ourselves better then they do!!

sms
I have taken Darvocet N100 for 26 years! I have too many

Anne
I have taken this for several years because other medications for arthritis hurt my stomach. What do I do now? I have not had any trouble with it

Hannah
I’ve taken Darvocet and the generic pill. And I found out that the medication was recalled by some one I had happened to be on the phone with that night or I would had never known. what kinda shit is that I have cirrohsis of the liver and Hepto-pulmonary syndrome. Plus I am diabitec, What you people trying to kill me?! Or What!!!!!! We should be notifed by our doctors, Not hear it from the news and /or friend. The FDA should contact the peoples doctors and let us know so there isn’t a panic. This is our lives you are screwing with. What should we do? Oh, I forgot to mention that I also have a small hole in my heart do to a murmur I believe, but not sure but I do know it is there, when the doctors did a cardio – cath and a TEE what ever that is.

Nancy
I find it interesting that as an RN for 40 years, I have never heard about these risks from Darvon/Darvocet. I have taken it for arthritis, as it has some pain relieving effect without causing drowsiness. I also developed atrial fibrilation.

Faye
i have been on dorvcets for years for pain..i have had several angioplasties..a total bypass down right leg..i have heart arrympthia..pad and now pvd…and still on dorvacets….my heart arrythmia is really bad now….

Cynthia
What about the lives this drug has already claimed? What are they doing for those families?

Denise
I have been prescribed Darvocet for quite a few months now due to a pancreatic hemorrhage and now suffering from gastroparesis (coupled with other issues from contraindications from meds. prescribed). Although my physicians have been well-aware of my pre-existing condition of mitral valve prolapse (bi-jimminy and pre-ventricular contractions accompany), I have suffered a set-back with this condition along with a very low resting heart rate (ranging from 36-42) possibly due to the effects of Darvocet. I have just recently been brought to awareness of this side effect (nevertheless, the serious side effect) on the news (not from physicians).

Gail
I took Darvocet every day for approximately eight years because of an extremely painful nerve disorder. A couple of years ago I switched to Percocet because the Darvocet just wasn’t working. And now this. I don’t see any numbers indicating what the statistical chance of developing heart disease from Darvocet is or how many deaths can truly be attributed to Darvocet. I will be calling my pharmacist as soon as the store opens. However, I also don’t trust my government at all when it comes to drugs. I have seen the lies about marijuana and realize the DEA is run by a bunch of Puritans who will lie with a smile on their face to prevent use of a totally benign drug. They’re protecting their jobs and pensions. So I’m not sure how much of this to believe. There were 2,000 deaths attributable to suicide or overdose of Darvocet over more than 50 years? How does that compare to aspirin? I’ll wait before I panic and hope that some real science is presented as evidence before the FDA bans Darvon/Darvocet.

Julie
In 1990 my mother, then 80, had surgery to remove her ovaries. During the night she reacted to the pain medication which I recall was Darvocet. Her surgery incision broke open, atrial fibrillation set in, and she had a stroke. When I saw her in the morning she neither recognized me nor spoke English……….only Swedish/Norwegian

dianne
I would like to know how many people have died using darvocet. This drug has worked good for me for years taken as the dr precribed. So now what is left. The other pain medications I have been told about is Oxcodone and its relatives. I have to function in society and be able to keep my mind clear. All the others do not allow me to do so. I need more information to make this a sound decision on the part of the fda.

Barbara
After 5 open heart surgeries, with in 2 months time, my husband has been taking Propoxphene for over 10 years. He did have a pace maker put in because of heart rhythm abnormalities. He has had some issues with depression. However, he has trouble taking other pain medications and darvocet seems to work the best for him.

Deanna
I have a friend that lost her daughter to Darvocet about 1 1/2 years ago. It has been the hardest things in life to deal with. It was her only child. She post pictures of her everyday on Facebook and sends her a messages, It breaks your heart to see the pain she is going through. They say it gets easier as time passes, but when it is something you loved soooooo much, that isn’t true. If this was a known problem a long time ago, why did it take so long to remove it. Many lives could have been saved. Even a warning on the pamphlet would have been nice to give the victums a choice to take them or be prescribed another pain killer. I am so sorry for all of you out there that knows someone that lost their LIFE to some Drug Company that only thought about making the buck!
