Ford Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Vehicles Equipped with 10R80 Transmissions Owners report Ford vehicles equipped with the 10R80 10-speed transmission of delayed shifting, jerking and power loss, but say the manufacturer has done nothing to fix the problem. July 12, 2023 Irvin Jackson Add Your Comments Ford Motor Company faces a class action lawsuit brought on behalf of owners of certain Ford Expedition, Mustang, Ranger, F-150 and Lincoln Navigators vehicles, which are equipped with an 10R80 10-speed transmission, which may be prone to harsh and erratic gear shifts, as well as a sudden loss of power. The complaint (PDF) was filed on July 11 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida by Joseph Vangel and Bryan Klontz, seeking class action status to pursue damages on behalf of all owners of Ford vehicles equipped with the 10R80 transmissions, which is allegedly defective. Plaintiffs indicate that numerous vehicle owners have complained to Ford about problems with the transmission, including reports that vehicles lost power while accelerating as drivers tried to merge onto freeways or cross busy intersections. This was due to the transmission failing to shift up or down, plaintiffs claim. In addition, the Ford class action lawsuit claims the problems may cause some drivers to experience whiplash and discomfort from the harsh way the vehicles shift, increase the risk of distractions while driving due to the system’s loud and unusual sounds, and generally make occupants not feel safe in the 10R80-equipped vehicles. Ford Transmission Complaints Ignored According to the lawsuit, Ford has known about problems with the transmissions, but refused to replace them. Instead, the lawsuit claims Ford told vehicle owners that the abrupt and harsh shifting they reported was “normal”. “Defendant knew or should have known that the Vehicles contain one or more design and/or manufacturing defects, including but not limited to defects contained in the Vehicles’ 10R80, a 10-speed automatic transmission that can shift harshly and erratically, causing the vehicle to jerk, lunge, clunk, hesitate, surge, or slip between gears. Some consumers have even reported experiencing a sudden loss of power while driving their vehicles,” the lawsuit states. “This common design and/or manufacturing defect in Ford’s 10R80 transmissions is a potentially life-threatening safety issue, and Ford has refused to recall or replace the defective Transmissions.” Ford has issued several Technical Service Bulletins in relation to the problem, but the company has maintained that the issues being reported are normal, and refused to repair or recall the vehicles. The lawsuit indicates that if plaintiffs and class members had known about the transmission problems, they would not have purchased the vehicles, or would have paid significantly less for them. Undrivable due to transmission issues, hard, shifting, limp mode. No issues at 4/3/2023 scheduled maintenance appointment at Tri-County Ford, Crestwood, Kentucky. Claudia November 7, 2023 Ford explorer transmission problems and took it to the dealer they say they fix it but still the problem they just have the suv there for long time give to me back n again Christopher November 5, 2023 I recently traded my 2019, F-150 for a 2017 Ford raptor. They both have the 10 speed transmission and if I had it to do over I would have never touched the 2017 raptor. I mean when you put it from park to drive it will slam into gear and when shifting it doesn’t want to. It stays in the same gear and almost redlines before taking the next gear. I’m out of work right now with a broken foot and there’s no way I can afford another transmission, I just gave 50,000 for this truck and I tried to take it back the next day and they wouldn’t let me. But before I bought it they said I have 5 days to make up my mind. Well I don’t think I will ever buy anything from a dealership without reading all of the fine print. I’ve been lied to through both of my last vehicles. Caleb November 3, 2023 Purchased a 2018 Ford Expedition Max Platinum on September 23rd. Still has drive out tags and haven’t made the first payment on it. It has 106,000 miles. The transmission has started to give me problems. No acceleration, when trying to accelerate it will drop to 1st gear, act like it wants to stall out, then shifts into gear after grinding really bad. Sounds like a aluminum can going through a shredder. Upon my research, the CDF Clutch hub assembly has a bushing thar’s slipping out of place. Ford Motor Company has fixed this hub assembly design to include a “lip” so the bushing doesn’t slid out of place. I believe Ford Motor Company should be responsible for this fault design/part that released into the market. Olujimi November 2, 2023 my 2 ford fusion transmission keep jerking Kevin October 31, 2023 Have a 2013 f150, vehicle would shut down, would shift gears eradicatly. Had a diagnostic, was informed it was a transmission issue. Took it to Ford after more investigating, informed the dealership it was the lead frame. They informed me they fix the issue, few months later my vehicle shifted from 6 gear to 1st almost causing an accident. Went back to dealership, they informed me it was the lead frame and it needed to be replaced, now that it was no longer covered under warranty. Was covered when this first occurred, how convenient. Ford Canada was useless did not assist me. Went to the other ford dealership I trusted located in sudbury. My 2002 ford had engine problems, needed to replace the engine and Ford Canada was useless in this manner, so no more Ford trucks for me. Linda October 31, 2023 We purchased a 2018 Ford F150 a several months ago. After a week the truck was throwing us all over the place and then would fail to accelerate. Ford said this was “normal” they said recalibration was all that was needed. After another month the transmission completely failed at roughly 77,000 miles. We only owned it for a few months. We brought it to Ford and they will happily fix it for us for Over $10,000! When I called Ford Customer service they told me we were just out of luck and there is nothing they can do to help us! Pretty amazing how the American people bailed this company out when they went broke and they treat their hardworking customers like this. Really a shame! Jennifer October 30, 2023 I have a 2022 f150, purchased in April 2022. At approx 12000 my transmission went out completely out of no wear. Dealership replaced transmission but with no guarantee that in 12000 miles it won’t happen again. October 2023 currently overheated, service engine soon, powertrain malfunction, reduced power. Waiting for tow right now and not happy about any of this. Kyle October 28, 2023 I have a 2020 mustang gt with a 10 speed automatic, and i’ve been having issues with the transmission. The car has 40,000 miles on it and i baby it. It hard shifts into 3rd and short shifts into 7th. It started showing signs of it around 20,000 miles. And has progressively gotten worse. It’s gotten so bad that it’s going to have to go to the shop. Thankfully my warranty hasn’t run out but this should not be happening… Lynn October 28, 2023 My husband is very loyal to Ford vehicles and just traded in his 2007 Explorer for a 2018 F150. This is a major upgrade for us and a huge investment . The dealership touted its Blue Advantage and Gold Certified Used Vehicle Coverage. Now—less than two months after the trade, the vehicle is unsafe to drive because of transmission issues described by others in this thread. Getting the vehicle inspected at our local dealership (the one we bought it at was an hour away) or really any Ford Repair shop is a lesson in patience. We need the vehicle because we are now two working adults with only one car. The transmission person has a lot of vehicles before he can get to ours. I wonder why? I’m being sarcastic. Our Gold Advantage should cover at least one week of a rental, but it’s already been two weeks and so far we’ve had to pay out of our pockets for a rental and scramble when we don’t have a second car. It sounds like it’ll be another 3 weeks minimum to either rework or replace the transmission. This is absolutely unacceptable in a car we’ve had less than two months. Where is the customer service, Ford? I’d like to be part of this class action lawsuit too… Joshua October 27, 2023 Bought 2019 F150 3.5 New. At around 80k miles the transmission would randomly change gears. Then the violent slamming into gear. Took to our local Ford dealer, vehicle was purchased roughly an hour north in Tampa, to have transmission looked at. They say it needs new transmission. Tell me i have a drivetrain warranty, it would be like 100.00. Then 2 days later they’re wanting receipts for all services done to vehicle. They indicate i have a Wrap warranty, the dealer doesn’t want to deal with it. So i provide all the receipts i could get in 24 hours. The mechanic i used for most major stuff lost shop in Hurricane. I Bring to dealership. They inform me 24 hours later it was denied. I didn’t provide enough service reports. I contact dealer that sold me truck. They tell me to bring truck to them, they would get it done. They give me a loaner. 3 weeks later they drive my truck back with no services rendered and picked up loaner. No paperwork with delivery. I call the service manager, he says, ” because I called warranty company and asked if I needed to get a lawyer, they would not honor fixing” . Since getting truck back, not fixed, the sync screen is gone, back up camaera comes on randomly, no reset functions work. I feel robbed by ford. 4 year old 50k truck is technically trash. Arthur G. October 26, 2023 Have been having same issues as well took in for 100k service probably tell me no issues or need the $8000 fix Patrick October 25, 2023 I have a 2018 Ford and am having these exact issues. I took it to the Ford dealership explained to them the problem only to get charged $200 saying they just needed to update a program and calibration issues. Even stated they did not feel what I was referring to when they completed said changes. Took it back and now they are telling me they understand exactly what I was saying after I had a video of it and showed them the problem. Get a call back and ask if I have a secondary warranty on my truck and they needed to know that before they could tell me whats wrong or give a quote on the repairs. Very frustrated and needs to be made right. Ashley October 24, 2023 2019 Expedition Max. Have had problems and had it at dealership more than once but never the true fix. Except more from support from ford. Michael October 20, 2023 2018 F150 with 10spd auto trans. Has shifted erratically since day 1 and multiple dealer visits have done nothing to fix it. Erin October 20, 2023 We purchased a 2018 Ford F-150 Lariat back in February for our son’s 16th birthday. We purchased it from a dealership two states over from us. Was given a warranty along with the purchase. It has been in the shop once already and was covered under the warranty. Now we are experiencing the issues as everyone else when dealing with the 10 speed transmission. Skipping gears, stalling when passing, sudden jerking while switching gears as well. Codes indicated yesterday that the transmission is shot. Was considering to having it rebuilt until we were told that the problem with that is parts cannot be found in order to do so. (So that tells us we have a major shortage of parts due to owners having problems with the transmission) Now we are looking $8,000 for a new transmission and of course our son being teenager and his first vehicle is heartbroken over it. We too would love to get in on this law suit! David October 17, 2023 August – took my truck into the dealer, had the transmission flashed with new codes. I was told the truck needed a new shutter and was that should take care of it and my truck is running great and it would take some time for the new flash to learn my driving style and shift how I drive. September rolls around, still had the hard shift so I took it to my transmission shop that has done work on my other cars. He said the transmission looked great, pan was clean, issue was the motor was misfiring and I had a shutter that needed to be fixed. I had just spent $2200 at Ford two weeks before that for the shutter to be fixed and the transmission being re-programmed. Now in October, I take it back to Ford to get the shutter fixed again and they tell me that they fixed the shutter this time and the transmission now needs the CDF housing replaced and the part costs $805, requires 7 hours of labor and will cost $5800 total. And this is on top of the cam phasers being replaced twice under warranty and then once out of pocket in January. Vincent October 17, 2023 Same thing as a lot of people here, 2020 Mustang GT with the 10R80 = nightmare. 2 months ago, 5 weeks in the shop and they replaced the valve body unit. Right now as I’m writing this, the car has been in the shop for 6 weeks now and the trans has to be rebuilt. Drum failed. The car has 19000 miles. I do not go to track with it and do not drive it like there is no tomorrow. So I don’t know but bad engineering on this one. Joel October 16, 2023 I paid over $8500 to have my entire transmission replaced on my 2018 F-150 XLT *one month* after my warranty expired and only around 41k miles. They wouldn’t cover it because I hadn’t brought it in for that before. Less than 5 months before that I brought it in for a routine service and it was OK. Been following a few of these lawsuits and hopefully I can recoup some, if not all, or my money soon. Mustafa October 13, 2023 Hi .. 2018 Ford F150 V8 5.0 10 speed. CDF drum failing, doesn’t hold pressure, was told per ford need a new transmission 130,000 miles. Was in the shop for 5 days finally got the diagnosis. How can someone join this lawsuit ? Philip October 12, 2023 Ford 10 speed transmission issues Brandi October 10, 2023 We purchased a 2019 Expedition last year and has less than 60,000 miles on it currently. This should not be happening. Over the last 3 to 4 months my Expedition has been in the shop for the transmission to be reflashed now 3 times since we owed it and a valve replaced. Not to mention other things that have come up with it. This last time almost getting rear ended when I couldn’t get it out of third gear due to power loss and took it straight to the dealership to get it fixed. Just picked it up from the dealership yesterday and it’s still not shifting correctly. We only had this for a year.. it’s not safe and am worried that someone in my family will get hurt if this continues on. This is my main vehicle and I always have my 3 year old with me. Get it together Ford. Fix this already or replace our vehicles. Danielle October 10, 2023 We have a 2018 Ford Expedition and just paid to have a rebuilt transmission put into our truck. A good friend of ours has a 2020 and is experiencing the same issue! Terrence October 8, 2023 Traveling home from Wichita, Ks to Fort Worth, Tx I had the vehicle on Cruise control at 75 MPH and moved to the left lane to pass another car. When I checked my rearview mirror I noticed some cars coming up fast. I started to accelerate when I heard a loud noise and a complete loss of power. The transmission continued making noises but did rein-gage and I managed to get ahead of the other car and move back to the right lane. The transmission continued making noises and shifting from gear to gear with power loss. Fortunately I was only a couple of miles from an exit at Ardmore, Ok. We pulled off at a Love’s Travel and called Ford Roadside Assistance. To shorten the story, no tow truck till the next morning, had to stay in a motel overnight. The vehicle is currently at the Fort Dealer in Ardmore, they claim some type of clutch broke and should have it fixed this coming week. Bryce October 5, 2023 2019 F150 2.7 10 SPEED Tried to climb Teton Pass in Wyoming and lost power. Thought I was going to get ran over. Unsafe is an understatement! Shannon October 5, 2023 My 2018 Ford Expedition Max is currently having transmission issues. Took it today to the transmission shop. They are saying it is the CDF drum. Needs a new CDF drum, hub and assembly. Going to cost a fortune to rebuild and be without my vehicle for over a week. coby October 3, 2023 2020 f150 lariat been having transmission problems since day one, just to be told tech couldn’t duplicate issue and be told I’m crazy. Just now finding out about the lawsuit, any help to join it would be greatly appreciated. Thomas October 3, 2023 I have an F150 2018 10 speed and the transmission is shot, it’s always had a hard shift and now needs to be replaced. Don’t have the money to do that and still owe 10,000 on it. It shuts off when going down the road, this is so dangerous I stopped driving it. Now I don’t have a way to get around. I want to join this lawsuit. Vikas October 3, 2023 I recently bought a new f150 pickup truck. I have been experiencing similar transmission issues. The transmission is very jerky no matter if its up shifting or down shifting, very clunky and skips gears. I was not expecting such a harsh gear change. It’s very annoying, and i hate driving this truck. I am trying to get it back to the dealership and see what fix they have , but in all of this i am very disappointed with this ford pickup truck. My advice to all readers out there, stay away from 2023 ford f150. Not a good driving truck. Susanne October 2, 2023 I bought a 2020 Ranger and I have the same issue – reported it to the Ford Dealer in 2021 and 2022 and was told it’s normal. Now in 2023 they finally accepted my warrenty claim. Thankfully that I paid for the extended warranty Debbie September 28, 2023 I have a 2017 Exporer Platinum with the exact same transmission issues. While it does not have the 10 speed transmission (it’s a 6 speed transmission), it has been in the shop numerous times from the beginning (we bought it brand new in 2017) and should have it’s transmission included in this lawsuit as well. With only 52,000 miles on it….it is on it’s 3rd battery (Ford would not pay for any after the first replacement), alternator replaced December 2022 (Ford refused to pay for that as well), transmission surges at low speeds (Ford’s transmission tech heard and felt it but did nothing to fix it even though he said it should not be doing that at all), I believe it was the transmission fluid that was flushed around 15,000 miles (Ford also refused to cover this under warranty…stating it’s a regular maintenance thing), shifts up hard somewhere around 35 to 40 mph, and now downshifts hard going down hill 35 to 40 mph range (it feels like 2 back to back hard jolts when it’s happening). I have loved this car (despite the problems) and have had to just keep driving it since it’s paid off and I can’t afford to replace it. Gerald September 26, 2023 We are having same trouble reman transmission and torque converter aprox 3k miles ago back in shop now same trouble Brent September 26, 2023 My wife and I purchased a 2018 Expedition and have had issues with the transmission since day 1. Always shifts hard between 3-5 gears and sometimes shifts hard when downshifting from 8-6(skips gears while shifting in “normal” mode). It had 62k miles on it when we purchased it and I failed to do research on the issues prior to purchasing, which was a huge mistake on my part, but seeing how this is such a wide spread issue, I believe Ford should own up to its mistakes and make things right before they go bankrupt and lose all their customers. Roger September 25, 2023 I have a 2022 F 150 with less than 5000 miles. While in Tow Mode it dropped out and flashed a warning to have the truck serviced. Ten minutes later I could not steer the truck. It also makes a loud noise when down shifting. Don September 23, 2023 Purchased a 2021 Ford Ranger with 7100 miles. First transmission replaced at 15000 miles because of the issues described in the class action suit. In August 2023, the vehicle had 24000 miles and needs a new transmission. The dealer said the transmission was not in tow mode. IT WAS NOT! But Ford has now refused to pay for the damage even though it is still in the warranty period. Mark September 23, 2023 Similar issues with my 2019 F150 with less than 20k miles. It has the 10R80 10 speed automatic transmission. FHappened this morning where it acted like it wanted to stall while I was going 40 mph. Frightening. I guess I’ll contact a lawyer since Ford appears to know about the issue. Eddie September 21, 2023 I purchased my 2018 F150 about 3 years ago and noticed kinda of a hard shift from first gear,I took it to my local dealer in whim I purchased it from and was told the shifting was normal, needless to say It only got worse and starting Jerking, skipping gears, stalling in traffic and just rite out quit pulling.I took back to spring creek Ford in Miller County Ga,where it now needs $8,000 worth of work also the rear-end was just replaced a couple of months ago Daniel September 20, 2023 I have 2019 after having 2018 with major transmission problems. After trading up to 2019 started having issues with transmission at 3,000 after multiple trips to dealerships over course of 4 years and 70,000 miles finally getting new main valve body replaced in transmission . Mae September 20, 2023 My 2018 ford f 150 is doing we everything they are complaining about it only has 139000 miles on it Tanner September 19, 2023 Does anyone know how to join the class action lawsuit McCabe vs Ford? Having same exact issues with my 2018 F-150. Shifts hard consistently and occasionally slips out of gear between 3rd-5th gears and shifts back down to 1st, loses power completely, then slams back into 4th/5th very hard. I was trying to merge onto the interstate the last time it happened and almost got hit by oncoming traffic, now I am hesitant to even drive the truck. Dealer says they will not know what is going on until they take transmission apart, but either way that it would require a rebuild or replacement of the transmission. Ford needs to make this right before someone gets hurt or killed in an accident. Dan September 19, 2023 Having problems when the transmission is cold that shifting out of first is extremely harsh. Tried to reset transmission adaptive tables and only helped 10% of the problem. When it’s warm, the transmission does a bit better. Love the truck but should not be having these problems at 55k miles. Not interested in paying for a rebuild or new transmission if Ford has these problems year after year. It’s a problem with the transmission not the driver. Should be a recall Colleen September 18, 2023 This is interesting, as I have a 2019 F-150 and my transmission does exactly what they are describing. Does anyone have information that they can provide on the lawsuit as my dealership has been giving me the run around. Danny September 17, 2023 I purchased a pre-owned 2019 f150 xl with the 10r80 transmission on April 1st this year with 24948 miles on it. I took the it in because I, and others, heard a clunking noise on April 12 with 25157 miles on it. Then took it in again on September 12 with 26919 miles for the same reasons. In both instances the local Ford dealer in Ankeny, IA said there were no problems. BULL I’m about to hire a lawyer here but would like to know how to get in the class action suit. Stephen September 17, 2023 Same issue here with my 2018 Lincoln Navigator L Reserve. Took it to AMCO and they told me its the valve bodies. Valve bodies have a spring that doesnt maintain pressure or its seal and now my transmission has eaten itself. I took it to Ford in Patuxent River Maryland and all they did was reprogram it for shifting but it is now showing signs of premature wear. There is metal in the pan. Sounds like I need a replacement transmission. 7700usd for this repair and I am just out of warranty. I hate this transmission but I love my truck. So torn and upset. Jon September 13, 2023 I have 40 k miles on my 2020 F150, after the third time the dealership is scheduling a repair. Oh, my, why on Earth would I be upset. Brian September 11, 2023 Glad it’s not just me. I have a 2022 F-150 experiencing many of these issues. Thomas and Cathy September 11, 2023 We bought the 2018 Ford F 150 new new in 2018, the truck has been a lemon since we bought it. It shifts so Hard, that it will jerk you inside the truck. 😪 When pulling out in the truck are pulling up a long grade Hill the engine rattles lot crazy. There has been sounds under the truck while driving it, seems like you are dragging a big Tree limb but when you look there is nothing so it has to be in the truck somewhere, wheels, transmission not really sure. The truck has used oil from day one. Have had to add oil between changes. The dealership just gives us a run around like the transmission is made to do that because it is a ten speed, The truck uses the oil because it’s being broke in, when it is gets more miles, it will stop using oil. They can never know what the sound that is being made while driving, underneath the truck is they have no ideal. ALL I CAN SAY IS WE GOT A BIG LEMON. Eddy September 10, 2023 Have a 2017 f150 had transmission replaced at 130k cause of hard shifting jerking then got stuck on 3rd replaced it then 10000km later same issues hard shifting loss of power grinding noise i have spent 1000s now on repairs and rentals due to them not taking responsibility over the stupid transmission. Marc September 8, 2023 I’ve brought my 2018 F150 Sport into the dealership several times and they can’t find the problem with the harsh way the vehicles shift.
