OVERVIEW: Granuflo dry acid concentrate and NaturaLyte liquid concentrate are used during dialysis treatment together with a bicarbonate buffer to help clean the blood for individuals suffering kidney or renal impairment.

These products are manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care, which operates thousands of dialysis clinics throughout the United States and also sells equipment and medications used at most other dialysis centers, including DaVita Dialysis Clinics, DCR, Renal Ventures and others.

Before 2012, individuals may have faced a serious risk of suffering a sudden heart attacks and cardiac arrest during dialysis treatment with Granuflo and NaturaLyte, due to Fresenius Medical Care’s failure to provide adequate warnings and instructions with their product.

Granuflo and NaturaLyte contain sodium acetate, which is converted into bicarbonate by the body during and shortly after dialysis treatment. However, the manufacturer failed to warn physicians that these products contain higher levels of acetate than most other dialysis treatment products, requiring physicians to carefully monitor and change bicarbonate buffers administered with Granuflo or NaturaLyte, to avoid a risk of cardiopulmonary arrest and sudden death from heart problems.

LAWSUITS OVER FRESENIUS DIALYSIS TREATMENTS: A number of families throughout the United States filed claims after their loved ones died or suffered a catastrophic heart injury during or within 48 hours after dialysis treatment.

According to allegations raised in Fresenius dialysis treatment lawsuits:

  • Fresenius Medical Care negligently manufactured and sold unreasonably defective products
  • Granuflo and NaturaLyte were insufficiently tested and unsafe as designed
  • Inadequate warnings and instructions were provided with Granuflo and NaturaLyte, which did not fully inform the medical community about the nature and extent of the risk of heart attack, cardiac arrest, sudden cardiac death and other health problems
  • Even after Fresenius Medical Care knew or should have known about the problems with Granuflo and NaturaLyte, they continued to sell the products and attempted to convert clinics to use of the products by offering pricing discounts and packaging Granuflo and NaturaLyte with other dialysis products
  • Fresenius Medical Care provided critical information about the risk of heart attacks and death from Granuflo and NaturaLyte to doctor’s at their own clinics before warning other dialysis centers that used their products
  • Information was withheld in an attempt to maintain Fresenius Medical Care’s market share and maximize profits, at the expense of the safety of dialysis patients receiving their products

FRESENIUS DIALYSIS TREATMENT PROBLEMS: According to an internal review of patients treated at Fresenius Medical Care clinics during 2010, there were at least 941 cases where patients suffered a sudden cardiopulmonary arrest at the dialysis center.

In November 2011, Fresenius Medical Care issued an internal memo to their own physicians warning about the potential concerns associated with Granuflo and NaturaLyte, and highlighting that bicarbonate buffers should be regularly monitored and adjusted to reduce the risk of heart attack, cardiac arrest and death. This same information was not provided to other clinics that used Granuflo and NaturaLyte.

In March 2012, after receiving an inquiry from the FDA about the internal memo, Fresenius Medical Care issued an alert to other dialysis clinics that may use their Granuflo or NatruaLyte products during hemodialysis treatment.

In May 2012, the FDA warned about the risk of hemodialysis dosing problems with NaturaLyte Liquid and Granuflo Acid Concentrate, indicating that these products can raise bicarbonate levels in patients going through dialysis treatments, causing a condition known as metabolic alkalosis, which can increase the risk of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke, low blood pressure and death.

In June 2012, it was reported that Fresenius dialysis problems have resulted in an FDA investigation, examining whether the manufacturer of Granuflo and NaturaLyte failed to adequately warn doctors that the products could cause heart attacks and other serious injuries during hemodialysis.

In February 2016, Fresenius proposed a $250 million settlement agreement that is expected to be accepted and funded by August 2016.

I lost my grandfather in 2005 from this drug. He raised me as if I was his own. I was a high school student who had never lose anyone close to me before. This was a very traumatic experience for me, it still hurts as though it happened just a day ago. 11 years later and I can finally get some type of closure. No there is no amount of money that bring him back, however I can use the money to do things such as purchase him a tombstone. We are all hurting whether its $1 or $100,000 it is still a dollar more than what we currently have. There’s no need to lose to a love one and some money.

Accept the settlement, it’s really no use in going after more money, God will be the one to lay judgement on them. We live in terrible times where people and companies with money can get away with this on earth but not on judgement day. My father was killed by their Granuflo. I will always have an ache in my heart and mistrust, but God will help me through this.

Frank one case don’t make the deal. They just continue with the MDL . If one the cases gets big money, that’s what they are trying to avoid. Johnson & Johnson has to pay over 5 Billion in the Talcum Powder lawsuit. So if you want to jump ship you might as well.

No amount of $$ is going to bring our loved ones back. The amount has been stated $250M and of that $220M will be divided. Every case is separate. If 97% does not agree than the chance of receiving nothing is real. We are all angry which i agree to but again this is a legal process and the settlement amount has been set. Again if 97% does not agree you are looking at receiving nothing especially since the first case presented was awarded nothing. There are too many people involved to think about one’s self and not others. A lot of individuals on here have families to take care of and bills to pay as this has been in litigation for over 3 years.

My attorney stated that the settlement will be based on the years the patient suffered and how long the product has been used. my mom passed in 2010 and my offer is 500,000.00 after lawyers fees!! If I opt out this case will prolong another 5+ years!! No two people will get the same amount….Continue to pray and hope that justice is served.

My mother passed December 2,2011. I have read that a lot of you say let’s not take the settlement. Why not? Our loved, ones are gone. If they continue on with these trials, no telling how long it will be before we hear anythiing.Take a moment and think, no amount of money will ever replace what we have lost. Anyone who would even think about taking this settlement is not thinking clearly !!! I think that everyone should go to their nearest federal Marshall’s office and file charges against them . How long do y’all think they would try to settle this matter with some correct numbers . That’s what this is about so they don’t go to prison!!!

My dad died within 15 minutes of this treatment. April 13 2011. He always told me they were doing more harm than good. Several times before passing he was life lined to hospital due to treatments on previous days. He suffered for a long time.

frensisus won the wrongful death but there is to much leading to their failue to warn.if planiffs win the second case they will have to pay out way more .really this why they wana settle an stp the second case.come on yall our love one life is worth more than $250million.dnt take the settlement lets take our chance.my mon passed rite there on the table during a treatment…they say heart failue.i say dangerous drugs…god bless u all an good luck.

I think they should be charged with homicide . I also believe that offering 25,000 to the survivor’s is a slap in the face , anyone who takes it is a fool !!!!!!!

I am a Dialysis patient for one and one half years now. I dialyze at Fresenius of Coram NY. I started here in oct 2015. Since that date, I have been sent to the hospital with massive headaches 3 times. Also, I am suddenly developing rhemutoid arthritis in my hands and other joints, very painful. In the last 3 weeks, in the last hour of dialysis, (I only do two and a half hours) I am getting pains in the center of my chest. I getting very afraid I may develop a heart attack. After having read all of your posts and now I’m really scared. I’m asking for the names of the chemistry used tomorrow and I think I need to move to another unit. Thank you everyone for this information and I’m so sorry for your losses of your loved ones. Your posts may save other lives and may have saved mine.

I agree with Ck, 250k is not enough to share with 19,000 families. Theirs no price you can put on our love ones life. Not to mention they LAWYERS DON’T even know who has lawsuits or not but they knew when we hired them. They think this is a game but God is in control. This just adds on to the stress we’re already dealing with. If everyone don’t agree then what? We get nothing at all our it will be dragged out for a few more years. Unbelievable!!!

My heart aches for all of us who have been victimized by Fresenius. Thier neglegence & greed have damaged our lives beyond repair. I still grieve for my mom who died during treatment in 2011 & will never stop. She was in dialysis for 4-5 yrs & i will never forget how she suffered & realize only now that the meds meant to CLEAN her blood was actually POISONING it!! Wish we knew then what we know now, i know her last yrs would have been more full of life! No $$ can compensate for her suffering & ours but hopefully that degenerate company will have to pay more than a months profits for all our ruined lives. God Bless ❤

My mother the matriarch of our family was given this treatment for the first time 03-09-2012 she had 4 massive heart attacks with in 4 hours of the treatment, she was a young 60 years old… we lost our families leader mother, sister, grand mother, aunt and cousin to so many. At 44 i was pushed into the being the head of a large family my siblings and I still have not recovered jobs were lost, houses, and lives destroyed… Because there was no warnings i watched my mother slowly die and fall asleep too never wake up… And what so sad its coming up on her four year death anniversity and this Jones family still hasn’t woke up and neither has the Granuflo company

Where did CK get that $250,000,000 figure? I heard that the first case didn’t go that well. Hoping the second case goes better. I did hear that Fresenius should of given ample warning about what was going on with the Granuflo & Electrolyte treatments.

My father had a stroke because of this product and because Randy did not warn us of this product we continue to keep him on dialysis when trying to recuperate from the stroke all the while his fighting was in vain The product that gave him the stroke was been continuously pumped into his system as he was trying to recuperate from the stroke because he needed dialysis HAD they warned us that this product was bad we would’ve taken him off the product and let him recuperate from the stroke on his own because we didn’t have the option to do that my father died I won’t go away granuflo

My God all these so lay on my heart. My sisters and I lost our 51 year mommie 2/09; eleven days after her birthday. She transition while doing dialysis! No amount of money can bring her back. I agree each year pass and no compensation is really cold feelings on their end. My attorney said even Judge not pushing. my father had a fatal heart attack 2 hours after his 2nd dialysis treatment. this happened in march 2009. it tore our family apart which is still true today. I agree that nobody is talking about this lawsuit. if the numbers are true and there are over 6000 complaints then something needs to be done and this company needs to stand up and take responsibility for a product that killed people.

It is now the year of 2016 and there hasn’t been any compensation yet. My mother passed away July 2012 and I still don’t have answers.. Justice shall be served although no money could amount to my moms life. My mom was the bread winner and when she passed we lost our house, my dad lost his mind and myself being a teenager had to taken on a major duty all at once. My attorney will not offer us a cash advance and it seems as if no one knows anything.. I hate to hear about you alls loses but everyone posting has lost someone so dear and can relate to one another’s response. My Mom suffered from this medication she developed congestive heart failure she was all I had I was all she had she passed away May 7 2014 this medication caused her to be in and out of the hospital with breathing problems we are unaware of medication that’s being pumped into us we can only trust in our doctors and the diagnosis and medication giving to us my mom was a very sweet lady!!!!!!…I miss her so much no money can bring her back but I hope and pray that they are held responsible for this deadly drug!!!!

Hello family. After reading all of these comments my heart aches and I feel the pain ALL over again!!! I am an ONLY child and lost my Mother 3 years ago. The pain lingers daily. I LOVE her to LIFE EVERYDAY. My prayer is that there will be justice for us ALL & some what of closure. I saw my Mom minutes before she went into cardiac arrest while receiving treatment. I’ll NEVER forget that sad summer day in 2012 for as long as I live!!!!!!

They took my dad from us. He was was all we had left after our mom passed 6 years earlier…. He was doing OK until he had his heart attack on the dialysis machine…. It still hurts….and its so hard without him…..my siblings suffer as well….

My father also passed away after 4 days of his first and only dialysis treatment. Anyone who has lost a loved one the pain never leaves. this leaves a lingering guilt and feeling of mistrust towards the medical system. It leaves you frozen in disbelief and feeling you should have looked at what dialysis items the nurses were using. I will always feel mental anguish. It was like i watched my father have a lethal injection on death row for a crime he never committed. He was a kind, trusting and good elderly man and he did not deserve this and neither did I. I feel for everyones loss in the a forementioned comments. I too lost someone dear to me My Father. He was on Dialysis for 3 years . He was regressing physically everyday . His Doctor told me he would have more vigor. Instead he passed on the same day of a treatment. I hope something good comes out of these class action suits.

This has went on for far too long as of now the first bellwether trials begin on Jan 11,2016 & again in February. I myself feel this has went on for far too long and they need to take responsibility for their actions, they took from us and it’s time they pay for all the lives they have destroyed !!!

Why can we not find any updated information on this Class A lawsuit? It’s now August 2015, and the most recent updates on the case are from December 2014, and even they don’t reveal much information. Am curious when this case might go to some kind of trial, and what outcomes victims can (hopefully) expect, and when might they receive some kind of compensation?

This medication took my only child. He was 22 years old and was a genius. He had a bright future, and this company took that from him. I’m disabled and my son was my primary care taker. I think these people are murders for profit, they should be held accountable they’re no different than the cartels…I personally am on dialysis and had my doctor tell me he would give a negative review to the board if I wanted to get a transplant,what gives him the right to play god with my life,because I’m not living to his so called standers,or maybe there’s just no money in the cure…im ready to get unchained from this machine.
