Jeep Grand Cherokee Recall Issued Over Fuel Pump Failure Risk

About 467,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles are being recalled because they were equipped with faulty fuel pump relay systems, which may unexpectedly fail and cause the vehicles to suddenly stall, posing a serious crash risk.

The Fiat Chrysler recall was announced by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on March 5, following an internal investigation that indicated the fuel pump relay inside the vehicles’ Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM-7) may fail

Although no reports of injuries have been reported in connection with the defect, a sudden stall may pose a serious risk for vehicle occupants and others on the road.

The recall impacts 2012 through 2013 model year Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV’s manufactured from September 17, 2010 to August 19, 2013, which are equipped with 3.6, 5.7, or 6.4 liter engines, as well as 2012 through 2013 model year Dodge Durango vehicles manufactured from January 18, 2011 to August 19, 2013, which are equipped with either a 3.6 or 5.7 liter engine. In total, the recall covers 338,216 vehicles in the U.S., 18,991 in Canada, 10,829 in Mexico and 99,444 outside the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Fiat Chrysler first became aware of the potential defect in October 2013, when an investigation was opened after the safety office noticed that the TIPM-7 parts were on national backorder due to warranty claims.

After testing the vehicles in question, Fiat Chrysler was able to replicate the stall hazard, which was determined to be caused by a deformation of contact springs due to extreme heat caused by the combination of contact power and ambient temperature around the fuel pump relay.

According to the test results, the fuel pump relay got so hot due to the deterioration of the contact springs that it would shut down momentarily, causing a stall hazard.

Fiat Chrysler initially recalled 189,000 SUV models in September of 2014 for the fuel pump relay issues, but has since discovered and expanded more SUV’s experiencing similar defects. Between both recalls, the number of impacted vehicles actually recalled is nearly 656,000, and some safety advocates have warned that more than 5 million Fiat Chrysler vehicles are equipped with the same or similar fuel pump components, which could be vulnerable to stall hazards.

Chrysler announced that affected owners will receive an official notification letter with instructions to schedule an appointment with their local dealer, who will replace the fuel pump relay with one external to the TIPM. The recall is expected to begin on April 24, 2015, but owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and refer to recall number R09 for further questions. The NHTSA also encourages owners to report any incident reports to the Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

I unfortunately lost control and flipped the Jeep into a ditch and totaled my jeep. I’ve been carless now, trying to go back and forth to the doctors appointment & work. The best is I still owe on a vehicle I don’t have. I’m in pain & being a pain every day asking for rides, favors, & the worse part I haven’t been able to get another car yet. My own insurance company didn’t even investigate my incident & I reported it several times. Now I see this recalls every where & I’m just grateful & very lucky to be alive. I hope this never happens to anyone else. It’s been the one of the worst experiences of my life. Talk about feeling helpless.

ALSO we had to replace PCM due to water getting on the seals. $1000 problem. Then because of the chip shortage, we had to wait for months and months to get a new PCM, then because of that wait our FAN failed. It takes a "Special" fan and the mechanic had to order 3 fans to get to the correct fan. Got it installed and gave it back to us with no check engine lights. We are 4 days and back to square 1.

I received a recall on July 2021, recall # V62/NHTSA 19V-813 and the warning is about an URGENT SAFETY RECALL FUEL PUMP RELAY. I called the the dealer several times and they told me that , unfortunately the part was not available yet. This recall is so dangerous that My jeep stop in the middle of the road with no warning on the middle of the road. Luckily I had no cars behind me and nobody got hurt. I called Triple A and I took my Jeep to Santa Monica Chrysler Jeep. I received a call from John ( The dealer) He basically told me that that technician detected the problem to be related to the started. So I told me that I had never had issues with the starter, so I went ahead and approved the work. A few days later John called my boyfriend to tell him that, the started was not the problem and that the technician had to test the engine. And that I need to pay and additional $500 for the test. ( Really) I already payed for tech to to the test and inspection. On December 22 at 1:15 PM, I asked to speak to the service department manger, his name is Zack. I had to wait for a long time to speak with him because he's always busy. He told me that my car had some issues with the engine, so I reacted surprised and told me that my car was misdiagnosed by the technician and that I was requesting for the old started to be place back in my Jeep. I told him that the engine damage is related to the recall and he told me to contact the manufacture company. I asked him to give me the reports of what was done and found during the inspection. He promise to call me and have it ready by 12/23 with all the report and he didn't. Today is 12/28 and I haven't heard form him. I am very upset, but I don't want to keep calling Zack. My next step is to contact the CEO, nobody seems to care about my Jeep and what I'm going thru. I've bee taking Uber for a long time now and and I am very irritated. Can someone pleas tell me my rights or how to proceed? Do I need an Attorney? Kindly advise as soon as possible. Thank you very much, Thank you very much!

I have a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee and there is always a recall for the fuel pump. Every time I ask the dealership about it they never have the part. My question is why have a recall when you don’t have the part, you sound like politicians making promises you can’t keep

WHEN will the overpaid execs. and Board of Directors authorize the fuel pump relay FIX to be manufactured and sent to Jeep dealers. They seem to not care about Jeep owners and their risks driving a jeep. Get with the program Fiat. Fix your Jeeps.

I gave back my 2012 GC for all of the above mentioned issues. Does anyone know of any lawsuits regarding this? my credit is screwed behind this but that's better than getting killed or killing someone else.

Right now I don't know if I am going to by another Chrysler vehicle.

I hope they do not charge me for the part since I will supply the labor of installation which takes about 3 minutes .

    Where is the fix

I told them that it is so random that it may take months for this to happen. offered no rental or loaner car. Poor trade in value from the dealer of $8k. This is a serious problem and will end up killing someone. literally the day after I made the claim the new recall came out. there is a recall but no fix. So we were left to drive a car that could shut off. My wife and kids call it the Death Machine and for good reason. My daughter is about to start driving I couldn't put her in a car we cant trust, so Today I am trading the vehicle in and this will be the last of their products I own. If they don't value the lives of my family then they do not deserve my business.

This a result of not creating a more permanent solution to this issue. If the company knew about the potential hazard this represent to the vehicle and people they should come up with a more solid solution instead of just adding a temporary band aid to the cut and without mentioned other issues in regard this vehicle. To tell you the true I really lose my faith on this type of vehicle.

In response to Edward comment. My Jeep Grand Cherokee is doing the same thing. 2 years after supposedly fixing the recall. I'm now having issues again and they don't want to cover it smh.

  • EdwardMarch 29, 2019 at 3:15 pm

Is this recall a lifetime thing. If the fixed recall goes bad in two years is it fixed again for free? I just paid to over five hundred dollars to have the relay replace on this recall. The recall was done just over 2 years ago.

  • RayDecember 9, 2018 at 2:59 am

This is another FCA recall that the NHTSA let them off with a " hack " repair . What does TIPM mean to them ? It means to me totally integrated which means the whole module should have been replaced and not a HACK " relay mounted to the inner fender...Oh Boy am I p....d !
