Gourmet Boutique Recall: Chicken Salad and Meat Products

On Saturday, May 3, 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a nationwide Gourmet Boutique meat recall involving about 286,000 pounds of fresh and frozen meats and poultry.  The chicken salad and other meat products sold under the brand names “Gourmet Boutique”, “Jan’s” and “Archer Farms” could be contaminated with Listeria monocyotogenes bacteria, which could lead to serious and potentially fatal food poisoning.

The recall applies to certain meat products produced by Gourmet Boutique, LLC of Jamaica New York.  The fresh meat and chicken salad products were made between April 19 and April 24, 2008 and the frozen products were made between October 23, 2007 and April 23, 2008.  All of the items contain an establishment number of “P-18799” or “EST. 18799”

Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, which is a potentially fatal disease.  Healthy adults rarely contract listeriosis, but individuals with a weakened immune system, such as children, elderly, those undergoin chemotherapy or infected with HIV, can be very susceptible to the sometimes fatal infections.  Listeriosis can also lead to miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.  Symptoms of listeria food poisoning can include:

  • High Fever
  • Severe Headache
  • Stiff Neck
  • Nausea

Food poisoning lawsuits are being reviewed throughout the United States on behalf of individuals who have been diagnosed with listeriosis after eating one of these products.
