LG Electric Range Recall: Fire and Burn Hazard

A recall for about 161,000 LG electric ranges has been issued after reports where the stove-top burners are not turning off, or increase in temperature even after being switched off, posing a serious risk of burns and a potential fire hazard.

The LG Electric Range recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on November 8, after at least 80 reports of incidents involving burners failing to turn off or the temperature increasing unexpectedly during and after use.

No injuries or fires have been reported, but the CPSC and LG are advising consumers to immediately stop using the product due to burn a fire hazard.

Recalled LG Electronic ranges were manufactured by LG Electronics Inc., of South Korea and sold around the country at Best Buy, Home Depot, Sears, and regional appliance retailers nationwide from January 2006 to June 2010, for between $800 and $1999.

The recalled LG products have model numbers LRE30451, LRE30453, LRE30755, LRE30757, LRE30955ST and were sold in black, white, and stainless steel with a smooth black ceramic glass top cooking surface. The electric ranges are roughly 47 ½ inches tall, 29 inches wide, and 28 inches in depth. Model numbers can be found by opening the storage drawer at the base of the unit.

In 2010, Frigidaire and Electrolux Icon recalled 122,000 stove tops due to 70 reports of the surface heating element turning on at high temperatures unexpectedly because liquids were able to enter under the control knob. Specifically, six consumer reports indicated 3 spontaneous fires and 3 minor burn wounds.

Consumer should stop using the recalled LG Electric ranges immediately and contact LG to schedule and free in-home repair by calling (855) 400-4638.

Of course worst customer service that ever existed on planet Earth. By the way it is like 4 years old . I don't cook everyday. Also my microwave and fridge same brand and broke down already a while ago. Huge mistake to buy LG products.

Not sure if it helps, but our LG oven was repaired once for a defective circuit board. Shortly afterward and just after the warranty expired, the same problem occurred. This keeps the cleaning function from turning off (very high temperature) as well as other oven functions and occasionally the burners. It is very dangerous but I can't afford a replacement at this time.

My electric stove would not turn off. I called LG and they sent out a repairman, who replaced one circuit board. The unit was OK for a short time but now it is doing the SAME THING I am afraid to use this stove as it gets dangerously hot. Surely it is a big fire danger. Is there any lawyer who can help with this?? Please contact me if anyone can help.

We spoke with LG and they sent out a technician who told me the something within a sealed part of the unit caused an electrical arc which welded a hole in the bottom of our unit and that it was not repairable. I spoke with LG representatives on numerous occasions and all they would say was that our unit was out of warranty and they would do nothing for us. The problem was not the result of user mistreatment or an Act of God. We don't know what could have happened had we not been there to shut off the power to the range.

A little after midnight I went to the kitchen to get a drink and discovered it filled with smoke because a burner had TURNED ITSELF ON. That is subtly but significantly different than the reported recall issue of burners failing to turn off or unexpectedly increasing in temperature. On this night only a bowl was left laying on the cold, completely shut off, unused stove top (hence the smoke) but on any given night it could have been cookbooks, mail, or other flammables. The burner would not turn off - we finally had to cut the power. We jumped online and discovered the recall, and a recall hotline...we called it and were told we had reached customer service and needed to call back during business hours to talk to anyone in recall. We asked about the published recall hotline and were told no such thing existed : the number listed was to the after hours customer service department and they have nothing to do with the recall. Also discovered that although we have the model recalled, our serial number is not included in the list of serials being recalled, so we are gearing up for a fight with LG in the morning to try to get this resolved....of course, it is Hannukah and we are having 17 people over for a holiday dinner party on Monday.....but this could have been much, much worse so I am grateful the only damage was to a bowl.

LG range was purchased in 2009 for over $1300 (along with expensive french door fridge and over the range convection microwave!). Now oven shuts off and I cannot bake or cook in it. The part that is needed to repair is no longer available, so I can't even repair it! Customer service is horrible, they don't respond when they say they will, and they are now sending a repair for a recall situation ([Show More]LG range was purchased in 2009 for over $1300 (along with expensive french door fridge and over the range convection microwave!). Terrible.
