Masterbuilt Electric Smoker Recall Issued After Reports of Fires

|

About 11,000 electric smokers sold at Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas stores nationwide have been recalled following multiple reports involving fires that caused the doors to suddenly blow open.

The Electronic Smokehouse Smokers recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on July 18, after at least 6 consumer complaints were received involving fires that caused the smoker’s cabinet door to blow open.

Although no injuries or reports of property damage has been filed to date, this could pose a serious risk for consumers or bystanders.

According to the CPSC, the smoker has the potential to cause fires if the wood chip tray is not securely placed into the smoker. If the wood chip tray is not properly secured the wood may combust, causing the cabinet door to swing open and create a fire hazard.

The recall affects Electric Smokehouse Smokers marketed under the name Masterbuilt with model number 20070312 and 20070512. Model 20070312 measures roughly 32 inches high by 17 inches wide by 15 inches in depth and model 20070512 measures about 40 inches high by 22 inches wide and 16 inches deep. Model numbers and the Masterbuilt logo can be found on the back of the smoker’s cabinet on a serial plate. The cabinets have a black matte colored cabinet with stainless steel doors and a glass window and have a remote controlled panel located on the top of the cabinet.

The recalled smokers were manufactured in China under Masterbuilt Manufacturing Inc. of Columbus, Georgia were they were sold at Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s stores nationwide from May 2012 through August 2012 for between $270 and $430.

Consumers with affected smokers should immediately stop using the product and contact Masterbuilt Manufacturing at (800) 489-1581 for recall instructions.
