Paraquat Sprayed on Farms in 1960s and 1970s Led To Parkinson’s Disease Decades LaterLawsuit alleges long-term Parkinson’s disease risk from spraying Paraquat was not adequately disclosed by Syngenta, Chevron October 14, 2021 Irvin Jackson Add Your CommentsParaquat has been used by famers since 1960s to kill weeds, but carried no warnings about Parkinson’s disease risk associated with long-term exposure.More than 100 Paraquat lawsuits have now been filed by farmers and agricultural workers diagnosed with Parkinson’s, including a case filed this week by Illinois man diagnosed four decades after spraying Paraquat.Lawyers are continuing to review new cases. SUBMIT A PARKINSON’S CLAIMAgricultural workers and farmers nationwide continue to file product liability lawsuits against Syngenta Crop Protection LLC and Chevron U.S.A., indicating they developed Parkinson’s disease from Paraquat, often years after spraying the weedkiller.Paraquat is a controversial herbicide used widely throughout the United States since the mid-1960s to control weeds and long grass on farms, parks and other properties. However, a growing body of research has established a link between exposure to Paraquat and Parkinson’s, even if all of the manufacturer’s recommended safety precautions are followed. In one complaint (PDF) filed this week in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, Jerry Hasbrook indicates he developed the degenerative disorder four decades after he sprayed Paraquat on farms throughout the state of Illinois, noting he was never told about the long-term Parkinson’s Disease risks which could result from normal exposure.PARAQUAT Parkinson’s LawsuitsWere you or a loved one exposed to Paraquat?Lawyers are reviewing Paraquat lawsuits for individuals who were exposed to Paraquat and developed Parkinson’s disease.Learn MoreSEE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR COMPENSATIONPARAQUAT Parkinson’s LawsuitsWere you or a loved one exposed to Paraquat?Lawyers are reviewing Paraquat lawsuits for individuals who were exposed to Paraquat and developed Parkinson’s disease.Learn MoreSEE IF YOU QUALIFY FOR COMPENSATIONHasbrook was regularly exposed to Paraquat while spraying the herbicide on farms from 1964 to 1974, and again from 1978 to 1979, according to the lawsuit. In 2018, he was diagnosed with Parkinsonโs disease, leaving him with a permanent and progressively disabling injury.โNo doctor or any other person ever told Plaintiff that the Plaintiffโs Parkinsonโs disease was or could have been caused by exposure to Paraquat,โ Hasbrookโs lawsuit states. โAt not time when Plaintiff was present as Paraquat was being sprayed was he aware that exposure to Paraquat could cause any latent injury, including any neurological injury or Parkinsonโs Disease, or that any precautions were necessary to prevent any latent injury that could be caused by exposure to Paraquat.โThe case joins dozens ofย Paraquat Parkinsonโs disease lawsuits now filed in courts throughout the U.S., each raising similar allegations that the manufacturers failed to warn users, even licensed and trained Paraquat applicators, about the risks of Parkinson’s disease. Many suggest this was in order to keep the already controversial weed killer on the market and thus expand the manufacturers’ profits at the expense of the health of consumers. While genetics are often believed to be a major cause of Parkinsonโs disease, growing research indicates genes are only believed to be associated with about one-in-ten cases. Exposure to herbicides and pesticides are increasingly considered a leading risk, especially when combined with other factors that place individuals at risk of the development of Parkinsonโs.Given common questions of fact and law raised in complaints filed throughout the U.S., the federal Paraquat litigation has been centralizedย before one judge for coordinated discovery and pretrial proceedings. However, if Paraquat settlements or another resolution for the litigation is not reached, each individual case may later be returned to the home district where it was originally filed for a future trial. I remember the crop dusters spraying the cotton fields when we were working. I also remember the tractor sprayers come in to the cotton fields to spray the poison. We were all asked to walk out of the fields for a few minutes, but went back to work as soon as the tractor sprayer was done spraying the insecticides, pesticides. I now have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Jack January 9, 2024 I lived on our farm in the 70’s and my father used paraquat on the fields for no till planting. He died in 79 of a brain tumor. Doctors suggested that it could be from chemical use of paraquat. I worked on the farm and handled paraquat on a regular basis. I am now 74 and am having thyroid nodules and hyperthyroidism along with other issues. I feel like this is due to the exposure of paraquat since no one else in my family has had this type of disease. Charles August 29, 2022 As a young boy in Clarksdale Mississippi I recall being in the field working when crop duster was spraying chemicals on the field, I am older now I have a problem in my hands called essential tremor which is in the family with Parkinson disease Dennis July 5, 2022 I lived in Illinois for years and at least 7 of those years were in a small town north of Champane/Urbana and I recall there being corn being grown all around the community of Gifford, where I lived. I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s about 5 years ago. It is not a genetic version but due to the environment in which i lived. I don’t know if you can get Parkinson’s from living in a town surrounded by corn or not but I do not have any idea how I got it. Yes I am aware of the fact that about 2.2% of men will get Parkinson’s. I just have questions. I can only surmise that the farmers around used paraquat but I am not sure if their spraying could affect any residents in town.
