Phil&Teds Recall Issued After Stroller Brake Failure Reports

Phil&teds has recalled more than 9,000 Explorer and Hammerhead strollers in the United States and Canada after receiving a number of reports that suggest the brakes may fail.

The phil&teds stroller recall was announced on July 28 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada. The recall comes after the manufacturer has received at least eight reports from around the world that brakes on the strollers failed. However, none of the failure reports were made in the U.S. or Canada and no injuries have been reported..

Approximately 7,400 Explorer strollers and 160 Hammerhead strollers sold in the U.S., as well as 1,900 Explorer strollers and 66 Hammerhead strollers sold in Canada, are affected by the recall. Both strollers have metal frames, cloth seats and canopies, with the phil&teds logo on the crotch piece of the harness.

The phil&teds Explorer Stroller was sold in black, apple green, navy, red/black and apple green/black and has three wheels. The phil&teds Hammerhead Stroller was sold only in black and has four wheels. The affected strollers have serial numbers between 0610/0001 and 0111/4788. The first four digits are the manufacturing month and year followed by the unit number. The serial numbers can be found on a sticker on the inside left hand hinge when the stroller is viewed from behind.

The recalled strollers were sold at Babies R Us and other specialty juvenile retail stores, as well as online at philandteds.com, pishposhbaby.com, and albeebaby.com. They were sold in the U.S. and Canada from August 2010 through June 2011 for between $475 and $500.

The CPSC and Health Canada recommend consumers stop using the recalled strollers immediately and contact phil&teds to receive an upgraded brake assembly. Owners of the Explorers will receive a kit allowing them to upgrade the stroller themselves. Hammerhead owners will receive a shipping container that will allow them to send the stroller back for repairs.

Consumers with questions can call phil&teds USA at 1-855-652-9019.
