SinuCleanse Nasal Cleanse Products Recalled Over Microbial Contamination

A recall has been issued for SinuCleanse Soft Tip Squeeze Bottle Nasal Wash Systems due to a potential contamination with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria.

Staphylococcus aureus are the bacteria that cause staph infections, which can lead to fevers, chills, sores, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, potentially resulting in severe illness or death.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the SinuCleanse Nasal Wash System recall on February 25, after confirming that the product was contaminated with S. aureus, which may result in blood or secondary staph infections for users whose nasal cavity might be damaged from inflammation and injuries caused by the productโ€™s use.

Secondary infections could include endocarditis, bone and joint infections, splenic abscesses and bacterial sinusitis. They may also lead to eye tissue infections, vision problems, cranial nerve damage or meningitis, which can be fatal.
