Wall Bed Recall Issued Following Reports of Injuries After Detaching and Falling Onto Consumers

CPSC warns about 22 reports of wall beds falling, causing at least 10 injuries.

Federal safety officials have announced a recall impacting nearly 70,000 Dorel wall beds sold through Amazon.com and other major retailers since 2021, following reports of problems where the beds detached from the wall and fell on nearby individuals.

Also commonly referred to as “Murphy Beds,” wall beds feature designs that allow them to be folded up and stored vertically against a wall, in a cabinet or in a closet. However, dangerous design defects have been linked to a number of different brands in recent years, which may allow them to suddenly detach from the wall, leading to serious impact and crush hazards.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the wall bed recall on November 21, impacting products distributed by Dorel Home Furnishings, Inc., which were sold under a variety of different brand names, including:

  • Pinnacle Wall Beds
  • Paramount Wall Beds
  • Impressions Murphy Beds
  • Holly Hills Murphy Beds, and
  • Her Majesty Wall Beds
  • Signature Sleep Wall Beds
  • Novogratz Wall Beds

The firm has received at least 22 reports of the wall beds detaching from walls, which has resulted in 10 injuries, including concussions, contusions, cuts and other bruises.

The recall comes days after the CPSC fined another wall bed manufacturer $16 million, for failing to report similar problems associated with their products.

Previous Wall Bed Recall Has Led to $16M Settlement With CPSC

The Dorel wall bed recall is not the only time these kinds of products have been known to fall and injure people. A previous Bestar wall bed recall was issued in 2022, which recently resulted in a  $16.025 million civil penalty from the CPSC, following similar reports that the company’s beds were detaching from walls, and caused at least one death.

From September 2014 through 2022, Bestar became aware of at least 35 incidents of the beds detaching from walls, leading to 15 injuries and one death. However, even though Bestar was aware of the problem, it did not report the issue to the CPSC immediately, as required by federal law. In fact, no recall was issued until April 7, 2022, nearly eight years after the company first became aware of the incidents.

As a result, federal safety regulators announced the Bestar wall bed fine on November 18, 2024. However, all but $4 million of the total fine is being waived due to Bestar’s cooperation in providing truthful, accurate and complete documents to the CPSC.
