Arctic Cat Snowmobile Recall: Risk of Fuel Leaks and Fires

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has posted notice of an Arctic Cat Snowmobile recall involving about 10,000 of the 2009 model year Mountain Cat and Crossfire Snowmobiles. The vehicles contain a potentially defective part that can allow fuel to leak, posing a potential fire hazard.

The recalled snowmobiles were sold by authorized Arctic Cat dealers throughout the United States between June 2008 and November 2008 for between $7,500 and $13,100.

Owners have been advised to stop using the Arctic Cat snowmobiles and to contact a service center for free repair.

The mounting hardware used to secure the fuel pump may allow the fuel to leak, posing a fire hazard to consumers. There have been at least four reports of the Arctic Cat snow mobiles leaking fuel, but the U.S. CPSC indicates that there have been no known reports of personal injury or property damage associated with the defect.

The Arctic Cat recall only applies to the 2009 Mountain Cat and Crossfire snowmobiles, which contain a VIN number between 103896 and 118441 stamped into the tunnel near the right side foot rest.

The sleekly designed models were sold in colors of green, orange and steel gray. The code M6 or M1000 is stamped on the sides of the Mountain Cat snowmobiles and the codes Crossfire 5 and Crossfire 1000 are stamped on the sides of the Crossfire snowmobiles.

Registered owners have been contacted by Artic Cat, but additional information can be obtained by contacting the manufacturer directly at (800) 279-6851.

My 2004 Arctic Cat T660 Turbo was not in the recall in 2006, but I finally discovered why the fuel was leaking from around the filler cap this winter when I complained to the dealer. He stated it is probably cracked around the top of the tank at the filler cap. This machine takes the same fuel tank cap as the recalled machines. This model was not sold in high numbers so the company did not want to include it in the recall. It is the same issue with a poor quality tank and it appears all tanks in this time frame will fail, causing a serious issue resulting in a large fuel leak. Mine really got worse on a 200 mile ride this winter resulting in my snow pants becoming soaked in gasoline. This could have resulted in a serious fire. Arctic cat does not want to take responsibility because the machine is now at the 10yr mark and they legally do not have to do anything with it. It started leaking about 5 yrs ago, but I was told it was just coming out the cap vent. This tank should have been replaced in 2006 with the rest of them. I should have been notified of the serious safety hazard.
