Invisalign Invisible Braces Linked to Reports of Serious Allergic Reactions

Federal investigators have issued a warning to the makers of Invisalign for a failure to notify the FDA about potential problems with their invisible braces, which have reportedly caused some users to suffer extreme allergic reactions.

The FDA Invisalign “invisible braces” warning letter was issued last month and accuses Align Technology, Inc. of failing to pass on adverse event reports to the agency in a timely manner. Some of the complaints, which include incidents of severe allergic reactions that have required hospitalization in some cases, date back to November 2007, but were not reported to the FDA as required by law.

According to the warning letter, allergic reactions to Invisalign braces reported by users include swollen and irritated lips, sore throats, a burning sensation on the tongue, ulcerations in the mouth and swollen lymph nodes. In some instances Invisalign side effects led consumers to stop using the braces.

Federal regulations require medical device and drug companies who receive consumer complaints regarding potential side effects of their products to forward those adverse event reports on to FDA within 30 calendar days of receiving them or otherwise becoming aware of the incident.

In a response to the letter, Align Technology said in a press release that it was attempting to fully comply with the FDA’s concerns, that they are turning over all copies of documentation requested by the agency and that they want to resolve the issue “with minimal impact on the company.”

Align Technology claims that the Invisalign system has been used by more than 1.3 million people since it received FDA approval in 1998. The product line includes Invisalign, Invisalign Teen, Invisalign Assist, Invisalign Express and Vivera Retainers. It was not clear from the warning letter which Invisalign products were associated with the reported problems and which were not.

The assurance was a definitive “100% resolution”... yet here I am, £4,200 lighter and burdened with a condition I didn't bargain for - TMD. My confidence in the promised solution has been replaced by constant discomfort, a tension in my jaw that seems to be an unwelcome side effect of wearing aligners for the advised 20 to 22 hours a day. My efforts to adapt to the presence of the plastic resulted in excessive jaw clenching, and my calls for help seem to echo into a void of indifference. Despite numerous attempts to seek support from medical professionals and Align Technology, my concerns seem to be met with an unsettling silence. And the most shocking part? The UK consumer care team, whose response — or lack thereof — paints a clear picture: once the payment is processed and the treatment is supposedly 'finished' , the patient's experience no longer seems to merit attention. This isn't just about misaligned teeth anymore... it's about my well-being. My quality of life and mental health have taken a backseat in the eyes of those who I hoped would guide me through to a resolution. Such an ordeal cannot be swept under the rug. There must be accountability!

I was promised that it would "100% resolve the problem"... I was left sorely disappointed. Instead, I now struggle with TMD and other health issues I never had before the treatment. I'm convinced that the constant use of these aligners caused this issue, as I had to wear them for 20 to 22 hours daily. My jaw felt constantly tense, requiring me to clench it in discomfort to accommodate the plastic in my mouth. Despite seeking help from various medical experts and Align Technology, my concerns and complaints have been brushed aside altogether. The UK 'consumer care' team is a complete letdown — they don't seem to care once they've pocketed your money. This entire ordeal has deeply affected my quality of life and mental well-being... And I will not settle until I get justice!

This is for numerous reasons... as my original trays never fit properly and caused lots of cuts in my mouth. Eventually they agreed to make me new trays. However, once I could finally manage to wear them reguarly, I kept getting sick. I noticed it was causing me to have a sore throat and be more prone to getting sick. Whenever I stopped for a few days, my throat recovered. I now have to take out the tray after using it at night and oil pull for fifteen minutes. This is improving the throat and preventing it from getting sore. I do however, have a rash above my upper lip and on the sides. This too, starts to go away when I stop using the trays but then reappears when I am trying to be consistent with the trays. As someone who once had braces back in middle school, I would say that braces were a breeze compared to this. I thought I'd look today to see if there was harm in the plastics again and low and behold there can be. At this point, I'm hoping to suck it up until treatment is done because they are realigning my teeth which my dentist said I needed to have a healthy bite. It's certainly not been easy but I hope to perservere and be done asap.

Very tight chest like something is sitting in my chest. All of this started when I got invisilign. I noticed that when I wear the retainer at night. My back pain starts all over. In the day time when I don't use them, I feel less pain. I will not wear them to see what happens. Reading all of this, connects the plastic to all my symptoms. I want my health back. No one talks about this. It's insane and scary that we have to look for answers on our own. Living in the best country in the world and having the technology. I guess our health is not important.

The next week it was burning my belly and my eyes. My lips were somewhat swollen. My face was a bit pinker than normal. I suspected it was the invisalign but I had already put $1000 deposit down and really didn't want to stop. By the 6th week, I was waking up in the middle of the night because it was so painful. I had to stop. My orthodontist said he'd never heard of any problems but he didn't charge extra for me to start over with metal braces and didn't have any problems with them. I just got my braces off about two months ago. I do have to wear plastic retainers 24 hours a day for 3 months. I'm watching for signs this time. I do have to say, I feel cold rather than burning. in my esophagus and roof of mouth but it could be because of GERD at my age. After 3 months, I only have to wear them at night. I can ask to switch to Hawley but it wasn't recommended.

After 2 months, wearing no aligners, I started Clarity 3M aligners on 1/16/20. I am about to start wearing RetainerClub.com aligners but the packaging has an allergy warning. I contacted my orthodontist, who referred me to Retainer Club. He said is not aware of any patients having allergic reactions to Retainer Club aligners. That is what he said about Invisalign and I know how that turned out:( Invisalign treatment began 11/18/19 and ended the morning of 11/20/19. I also posted about the allergic reaction online (don't recall which one).

He hasn't worn them since and hasn't had a seizure since and we're wondering if there is a connection. Invisible braces have shown to contain trace amounts of benzene, which can cause seizures.

Is anybody experiencing uncomfortable bloating? If so any suggestions for remedy? I typically start getting bloated around the same time in the afternoon and it last all night. Nothing else has changed in my life except for wearing Invisalign!

I had extreme fatigue! I mean extreme, had to stop treatment but the Ortho Doctor didn’t believe me that I was reacting to them!! And is still charging me $6,000!! Even though I stoped treatment after 2 weeks!!!

Anyone that has had any kind of reaction that is not normal, please go to FTC.gov and file a claim under product fraud. I filed my claim after finding out my seizures, trigeminal neuralgia, severe periodontal disease and loss of multiple teeth with need for implants. If you look up Hexane 1,6 you will find most of your symptoms. It's toxic and not for oral use.

Noticeable soreness, irritation and ulcers gradually happening after moving onto the nighttime vivaris retainers. Can't stand it and removed them tonight. What a waste of money. I did wonder about my almost constantly swollen glands in the throat. Very validating to read of all the comments as I thought I was overreacting.

It's 2023 and to this day I find my mouth super dry, gasping for air in the night, anxiety and still trouble swallowing pills. It's sad when you get anxiety about swallowing 1 advil. I have never had trouble swallowing, and since these retainers I always feel like im choking. I dont even like to eat without someone being home. I was recently pregnant and couldnt even take my prenatal vitamins or an antibiotic that was prescribed to me. I used to be able to swallow 6 advil at once and never experienced any kind of anxiety in my life. Hopefully one day I will feel normal again. Huge mistake!!! I would never allow either of my children to use these aligners.

I am calling my dentist tomorrow. It is so uncomfortable and hard to eat and even speak.

I went in for an appointment and was told the retainers were not tracking correctly and I would need to have new ones and that would prolong the treatment. I had what they told me what a simple case. I did not want to go backwards and only had one more tray or so left, so I asked to have my case stopped and retainers made. It is when I went in to get the "buttons" removed that changed everything for me. They grind them off and smooth off the teeth. I had about 14 buttons. The next day my mouth felt like it was on fire and I had a sort of mucous film all over my mouth that I could not get rid of. I went back to dentist for a cleaning thinking it was a gum infection. They said no, and gave me a RX for Gerd. I didn't understand how one day my mouth was fine and the next I had Gerd and my mouth was completely changed. I finally found this site and was relieved. I thought I was losing my mind. I wrote a letter to the dentist and the office letting them know I believe I had a reaction to the trays and the removal of the buttons and their material. No response from them. It has been almost a year and although I can breathe better and my stomach issues have gone away, my mouth is a mess with the film substance that will not go away. The only relief is when I am eating or drinking or chewing gum. The dental offices/ortho offices should be telling patients about potential side effects so they can make informative decisions about treatment.

First, I began to have rashes/itchiness on my body and face together with angular cheilitis. Then I started to have a feeling of a throat closing and tightness, difficulty breathing, hives on my chest, headaches, fatigue. I went to all types of doctors, undergone various blood tests, nothing abnormal was detected. At some point I was told I had a severe allergic reaction but yet I could not relate it to Invisalign. The things were getting worse and worse, I barely could breathe and my chest was covered by itching hives. Fortunately, I found this page, and took Invisalign out. My condition started to improve immediately. However, a month after I took them out, I am still not ok, some symptoms persist. Letting the doctors know about having worn Invisalign for 6 months, they prescribed antihistamines and blood cleansing IFs. I read some research saying that plastic dental braces could leach toxic harmful chemicals. I hope to recover one day sometimes soon and become the one I used to be. I wonder how many other people wearing plastic dental braces are not feeling well and are not able to find a cause of their condition.

My daughter had the metal braces but when finished, needed a retainer. Her Ortho provided the invisiline retainer for her top teeth (different type of retainer for bottom teeth). 24 hours later, I noticed a rash around one of my daughters eyes. It gradually moved to both eyes. It also included swollen lips. Has anyone experienced a rash using the invisiline retainer post braces?

The lip swelling and tingling in my tongue was happening for awhile and the more intense night sweats. Then more recently I experienced something scary like someone else on here which was the scalp pressure! I thought all sorts of things and was getting so scared something was really wrong. I continued to tell my Ortho and she dismissed & continues to dismiss my issues to this day. I have a few more months until I finish my treatment but I’ve had these for almost 3 years now because she didn’t want to listen to me until the doctor finally say I needed a bone graft due to the aligners. She then ordered a new set to be made to correct this halfway through so now I have to keep these things in even longer in addition to my retainer at the end! I’m not happy with Sage Dental and how they handled this at all. They tried to make me think I was ridiculous for thinking this and at one point the Ortho and a few staff literally laughed in my face when I voiced my concerns. If you can avoid Invisalign and Sage dental in Plantation, Florida, please do by any means necessary!

I blamed the symptoms on my hypothyroidism and got back to using it for reduced hours. Noticed each time w/ Invisalign use, the symptoms returned, turned to m dentist for the issue---This is the weird portion of the dentist's I thought: the dentist led me to a private room for my issue which the issue was handled quietly and "stealthily" avoided addressing the issue by suggesting the issue to slow use for the 5 years termed Invisalign. The unscrupulous practice left me in dark and the symptoms evolved over the years. In 2020, i used it 4 hours a day and not every day but in 2021, I ran to ER for heart palpitations, shortness of breath, tingling in all four limbs, and throat swelling. I finally decided to look into this product for the side effects but this website was not out front and up. In 2022, I ran to the ER two times and each time, symptoms were similar and worsening, recommending to see a cardiologist. I could see bright red blood in my spit, pain shooting from my throat to my head, and upper chest and back pain. I stopped using it and it took a month to feel a bit better. I will be seeing a cardiologist next week however, finding this webpage gave me a better insight into evolving symptoms since using the product. Here is one question though. Is it really a snake oil incident a stupid customer buys into? Or it is an undisclosed and overlooked product safety measurement by the Consumer Product Safety Commission that we pay tax to? People get hurt when regulatory bodies and law-making bodies are distracted. Where are the accountabilities for the product maker, and really these dentists who are unscrupulously promoting the toxic product at the expense of lives? How many people should be hurt to get the attention of our tax-paid agencies to act on it?

Years ago I was diagnosed with IBS and Gerd. I thought maybe it’s a flare up? But how could that be? I learned years ago what diet works for me and I stick by it religiously. I then thought, maybe I’m getting sick? Well, over the past couple of weeks symptoms only worsened. I began having chest pains, on the left side of my body. Neck pains, and when I would eat it was kind of hard to swallow, my tongue also felt tingly on the tip. Then came the stomach pains along with feeling really bloated everyday. The last few days I also started having sores on my bottom inner lip, I thought maybe I’m biting my lip in my sleep or something? I literally did not put it together until yesterday evening, Saturday. I literally sat up and thought, oh sh** am I allergic to these retainers?? I took them out immediately, I finally slept well and all day today I have felt SO much better. These things were actually poisoning me! Now I have to call my orthodontist tomorrow and see what can be done? I doubt I’ll get a refund back. I will never wear Invisalign again and I definitely would never recommend them.

Then graduated to the permanent upper and lower lingual bar. Over a few weeks, I experienced mouth and tongue sores, my lips swelled and my tongue would bleed. I was told that one gets used to the bars so stuck with it. My lips burning was keeping me from sleeping, tongue sores, tongue bleeding, drooling, effort to swallow. My dentist told me that she has never heard of someone having a reaction to the bar before (come to find out it has nickel in it). We removed and it was instant relief. Over the next 24-48 hours my symptoms resolved completely. Since I did not have a lingual bar, I was told to wear my retainers. I waited a bit for my mouth to improve and have been diligently wearing them. I have developed sores on my tongue, tongue swelling and sharp stapling pain in the tongue that radiates to my throat, the tongue has a burn yet ache. My lips again swollen and painful. They feel like they are sunburned (they are not), I am constantly putting cortisone cream, Vaseline and taking Zyrtec but the hurt. In addition, I have been taking valtrex as initially I wasn’t sure I wouldn’t develop cold sores. I am again drooling. I noticed I have been feeling more short of breath to the point I felt I needed to have this evaluated before I go scuba diving to be sure I don’t have an event in water. Looking back while on Invisalign, I experienced more anxiety, i ended up in the ER once with GI symptom flare and once cardiac and under going echo and halter but now I wonder how much these things played into my last several months of not feeling well. The lip swelling, burning and pain as well as tongue symptoms, drooling and not sleeping for weeks to months due to pain is enough that I am done with this product. My dentist told me I am her only patient with any issues and that she is not aware of reaction to Invisalign. Clearly, I am not alone

My allergic reaction to Invisalign braces began the week of August 8th, 2022 when I began my 4th pair of braces. My initial symptoms included an itchy scalp, scalp pressure, hair shedding, and general fatigue. As August continued, I had a general feeling of unwell, fatigue, scalp pressure, anxiety, and headaches. During this time, I went to monthly doctor’s appointments in August, September, and October. I had monthly dermatology appointments each month as well. All prescribed prescription shampoo and steroids to address my health concerns. I had lost 10lbs. I continued this treatment for 4-6 weeks with no improvement. We discontinued the treatment plan to see if the prescribed medication was causing irritation. There was no improvement with worsening symptoms. During late September, I was still experiencing general anxiety, feeling unwell, fatigue, scalp pressure, and headaches. During the first week of October, I had additional symptoms of difficulty sleeping and heart palpitations and my nerves felt entirely out of balance. On October 12, I took out my Invisalign and contacted my primary care physician, dentist, and dermatologist about this possible connection. All parties agreed to remove the Invisalign for a week to see if symptoms improve.

This was also confirmed by ER Doctor on Saturday, October 8 which was my first visit to ER after discovering that my Invisalign trays were causing me a severe adverse reaction. I had full face swelling, blisters in the lips and tongue, swollen lymph node, difficulty breathing, heart palpitations, migraine, extreme fatigue, brain fog. The ER doctor prescribed me 50 mg of prednisone for inflammation and performed EKG, stressing if I had any continuing issues to go back to the ER immediately. I removed the Invisalign trays on Tuesday night October 5 when whole face swelled. Saw my dentist Wednesday, October 6. The swelling was bad but persisted to get worse within my actual mouth and lips and lymph nodes. I am on my fourth day of 50 mg prednisone and the swelling has started to recede but the blistering which is in my lips and inside my jaw tissue is persistent, and ER doctor said it could take weeks for this to subside due to the duration of exposure from the Invisalign trays, which has been six months, and he could not tell me when I may return back to normal. When I first put the Invisalign in, I started to experience headaches had some swelling, but it would come and go as the months went on. I started to experiencing migraines severe upon waking up, severe, chronic fatigue, severe joint pain severe brain fog I was sleeping 12 to 14 hours a day. It has totally disrupted my life. My doctor has categorically logged all of these issues because we have done blood test and allergy test to try and figure out what the problem was in the whole time. The problem was the Invisalign tray , I have done research and found hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of other documentations of experiences like mine or worse. The Invisalign client agreement does not disclose any of these severe reactions being a possibility my dentist was totally unaware of any of these adverse reactions being an issue, and on the website, they do not disclose any type of adverse reactions. Had I had the knowledge to know that these symptoms were caused by the Invisalign I could’ve ended my treatment much sooner and save myself months and months of pain and suffering. I understand that the FDA gave Invisalign online technology a warning in 2011 about non-disclosure and non-transparency of severe adverse reactions in their patients. I discovered many other documented case similar or worse than my own.

I've started to experience headaches, fatigue, mouth sores, and rashes. All of which are unusual for me, but did not connect it at the time. My second batch of trays my headaches became worse, and I started to experience joint pain, and my fatigue was becoming worse, and brain fog. I was also experiencing mouth ulcers, but again did not connect it to Invisalign - on my third batch of trays my fatigue was overwhelming and rashes began popping up all over my body. Swollen glands and throat. I had severe brain fog along with migraines. I also had intermittent tongue swelling, and mouth ulcers. On my fourth batch I only used the first tray, and my lips started to swell, along with mouth, and eyes. So switched to the new trays from the same batch and my face blew up I realize that the issues I have been experiencing were directly from the Invisalign. I immediately stopped them two days ago 10/05/2022. Although the swelling is receding, I have internal blisters in lips - like chemical burns. The doctor has prescribed Prednisone and Zyrtec so we will see what the long term ramifications are. I have been slowly poising myself for six months. Along with all the other issues I have been experiencing sever joint pain from the inflammation that is being cased from my reaction to the material used in the trays which are manufactured in MEXICO! Upon deciding to do INVISALIGN at no point was I ever advised that there were these potential adverse reactions. Invisalign has contacted me but I have no idea how this will proceed. I have paid $7700 for the comprehensive system out of pocket and completed half returning the fourth batch of trays to them. They offered a hypo-allergenic trays to finish the treatment, but from what I have read they are no better, not risking what's left of my health. And why wouldn't they use hypoallergenic tray for everyone??? I would advise caution when using this treatment, had i been informed I could have saved myself months of misery and probably long-term damage. I cannot believe there has not been a class action lawsuit.

I started having symptoms may 29th of 2019 with blisters on the bottom of my lips. it then progressed to constant burning and then swelling and then a white scaly blistery like and either purple or deep red color lips. These symptoms are constant and every day of my life since may of 2019. i Have seen 8 specialists and been incorrectly diagnosed with lupus, RA, and an auto immune called phemfigus . i am now going to change my retainer to a wire and no more retainers. I think this may be my issue. I have had 2 biopsy's suggesting sun damage so i did cryo freezing on both lips. Swelling was better but now symptoms are coming back. Most importantly i asked my dentist who gave me the invisalign if i may be allergic. He said he gave me the hypoallergenic ones. When visiting with the representative of invisalign one day in the dentist office back in 2019 i had said how grateful i was to have an hypoallergenic one he relied " I dont know what your talking about, we do not make a hypoallergenic one." SCAM!

I'm one tray away from finishing my last "refinement" and plan on stopping completely in about 2 weeks. Total time with program about two and a half years. I will finish, if needed, with traditional braces. Interesting that I did a digestive/stool analyses where secretory IgA was high in digestive track but subsequent food allergy test was negative to all foods tested. Something is causing a immune response in the GI tract (as well as elsewhere) but not food, hummm wonder what that might be...........

I tried to restart after a break and experienced the same symptoms but also with an added sore throat. Invisalign and dentists clearly have invested a lot of money into this endeavor and have reaped profits. They are not being upfront about side effects. This needs to be investigated. As soon as I stopped Invisalign, my gum inflammation, lip and tongue burning, gum recession and sore throat disappeared. There’s some interaction with the plastic causing an immune response that is concerning. I’m out $5,000.

I used mouthwash to rinse and clean my invisaligns and never knew it could ruin my digestive system. there are no warnings on their website that I found. Anyone with Invisalign retainers on who uses mouthwash before bed is slowly poisoning themselves. I realized I had a problem after 3 days in the hospital and a quarter size blister in my mouth.

Only change is me starting Invisalign roughly 6 days ago. I called my dentist today and she said there are very few people who may have a reaction to Invisalign but to come in and have her take a look. I’m hoping this is the case and I can just stop using them and it will go away. Not sure if I can add comments to this one, but will follow up after if I am able.

My mouth went from feeling like sharp glass all down my throat, to white patches and raw sores, to needing a steroid shot to get the inflammation down in my mouth, since pain relievers did nothing. When to touch it and my lymph nosed had swelled up like water balloons. I immediately took out the liners and went to ER. Had a CAT scan , nothing, had blood work to rule out high white cell count, negative. Called my Ortho, she don’t believe it’s TMD, will see in a few weeks with ENT. Sure enough I found this page when I began searching online. My orthodontist was terrible from the start, I should have been alarmed with the multiple page form I was made to sign waiving the orthodontist of liabilities. Although at no time was I told Invisalign could be unsafe. I had mouth sores from the beginning of treatment which I told my orthodontist were worse than the metal braces I had when I was younger. I had many of the attachments removed as I had constant sores in my mouth. Over the course of treatment I experienced and continue to experience severe fatigue, headaches, brain fog, dry mouth/lips, sore throat, abdominal discomfort and bloating, swelling around eyes, blurry vision, waking up feeling anxious, dehydration, and insomnia. This has persisted for more than two years. I have been to numerous doctors, some who run rests but mostly dismiss it. I finished the trays a year ago, however I still wear the nightly retainer. I will stop that immediately as I'm pretty convinced it is the cause of my suffering. What I'm curious about is if anyone is reporting these issues to Invisalign or to the FDA themselves. I am going to today.

My tongue is sensitive and painful. I get blisters on the inside of my lips which are dry and cracking. It is actually challenging to speak because my throat is so sore and my tongue is swollen making difficult to swallow. I have a slight burning sensation in the back of my throat. I have had an usual taste in my mouth which is difficult to describe but might be something along the lines of what it would taste like to suck on a musty towel. The taste just lingers constantly even after brushing my teeth and tongue. At night my mouth gets severely dry but when I take a drink of water I can barely manage to swallow it. I have been taking Benadryl and have had minor relief. I am hoping that these symptoms subside now that I have stopped using the Invisalign. At this point, symptoms are still occurring. Initially I thought that I must have been having a reaction to food. However, this morning I decided that I would fast for 24 hours to give my system a break and narrow down what might be causing it. I did not eat today and have only had water yet am still experiencing the issues. At this point, I have finallyrealized that it must be related to the invisalign. I have never had this issue prior to using invisalign. I am grateful for this site as I can see via the comments that others have had similar experiences which reconfirms my suspicions of Invisalign being the culprit. I have adhered to protocol for Invisalign care. I take out my trays when eating or drinking anything other than water. I brush my teeth after eating and prior to reinserting the trays. I clean the trays with warm water and the soft bristle toothbrush provided by the orthodontist office. These symptoms started fairly early on it just took me a couple of weeks to pinpoint what was causing the issue. I have called my Orthodontist and left a voice message but have yet to hear back from the office. I have paid over $3000 and am hoping that they will allow me to switch to braces or just refund my money.

It was only after I experiencing a severe reaction last week that I realized I was experiencing an allergic reaction to Invisalign . After wearing Invisalign for 8 hours, I experienced severe mouth burning, tingling and difficulty swallowing and lip swelling. I am a RN and I knew I was having an allergic reaction to the Invisalign. I immediately took Benadryl. I saw my orthodontist today and insisted that the buttons be removed and my treatment stopped. After what I experienced last week ,I would not attempt placing these devices in my mouth out of fear that the next reaction could be more serious. I am still experiencing mouth burning and lip swelling and it is four days since I removed the trays. Unfortunately, my orthodontist will not refund my money. There needs to be warnings placed on this medical device. Before starting treatment with Invisalign, people should be made aware of possible side effects.

My orthodontist did not take my concerns seriously. I am now wearing the retainers and am having the same issue--even worse. I am switching to a traditional retainer with the hope that my tongue and mouth will heal. I would never have elected to use Invisalign if I knew of these possible side effects.

I started Invisalign in January. 6 weeks into treatment I woke up with a circular white patch ulcer in the center of my tongue. I also felt like there was cotton in my mouth. I am a Registered Nurse and I felt it was candida. I tried everything over the counter to get rid of it unsuccessful. I saw my family physician and she thought it may be secondary to acid reflux. I was started on Prilosec but it did not clear. It got progressively worse and I was seen in urgent care where I was diagnosed with thrush. I completed 14 days on an anti fugal medication. It cleared the infection but I developed enlarged bumps on the side of my tongue and on top of my tongue. I consulted my dentist but he was not sure why these bumps were swollen he felt they were lingual papillae. They are so large you can see them on my tongue. I also feel them when I swallow. The raised red bumps are just where my tongue comes in contact with the Invisalign. I have been taking Benadryl with some relief. I also have tongue burning. After reading these comments, I am sure I am also experiencing an adverse reaction to Invisalign. When I committed to Invisalign, I was never informed of possible side effects.

I went to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack or stroke. In the meantime I was frantic , my nervous system was out of control. All the tests were Ok. For a week I was bedridden, I took off Invisalign but initially had no connection. When I felt better I started the treatment again, but a week after the mask change I was sick again. Panic attacks at night, chest pains, digestive difficulties, visits, doctors, worry. Now I haven't worn it for a month, but I still have some after-effects, such as reflux that doesn't let me sleep, problems with my neck. Reading your testimonies made me feel less crazy, I didn't know what to think anymore. There should be more awareness about these possible reactions.

That is when I saw the post about these Invisalign retainers causing these symptoms and figured out what was happening to me. I am posting these symptoms to alert others reading this site, but the doctors really need to be aware of this, especially the gastroenterologist doctors. I ended up in the hospital on an IV and if I had not figured this out on my own who knows how bad it could have gotten.

Once I started the Vivera retainer, my symptoms became more acute and started to see the blister in my mouth and experiencing nausea. It is February 2022 and I am still dealing with this horrible symptoms. Just a few weeks ago, I had a abdominal episode that after doing test and CT scan, I am starting to suspect that it could be related to the adverse reaction on my mouth. Like everyone else here, my dentist doesn’t feel my issues are related to the Invisalign product; however, my primary care physician can no longer ignore the facts and is helping me research. Next I am going to a specialist to test all the Invisalign materials to confirm if indeed I am allergic to any of the components. I hope to find answers soon since this has been a hard couple of months with these unbearable symptoms. I wish there was a support group where we could share experiences and bring awareness.

As of aligner 19, I began developing a swollen uvula with sore throat, this was after having experienced dry/cracked/irritated corners of my mouth for several weeks in a row. Sore tip of my tongue (the part that touches the edge of the aligner behind my front teeth). I took a PCR test to rule out covid-19 which came back negative, the swollen uvula and throat soreness seemed to subside through the first week, however, after wearing a new aligner the following week it took just a few days before my uvula was once again swollen and throat became very dry/itchy/sore again as well. It's painful to swallow. I thoroughly clean my aligners day and night as well as my own teeth, using antibacterial mouth wash and following all of the precautions like avoiding wearing the aligners when eating/drinking and taking care not to expose the aligners to things that would degrade its composition. Any more effort than this would be unreasonable, but if that was truly necessary the orthodontist should clearly indicate the risks of not doing so. After following all of the precautions and taking the necessary care, it is clear that these symptoms are related to either the material of the aligner, its coating or perhaps saliva issues introduced by wearing the aligners. It is incredible that a doctor would recommend this product knowing the potential health risks associated with it. It's inhuman to put a product like this in a person's mouth and cause them to have to endure discomfort, mouth trauma, pain and health detriment for an extended period of time. I was always skeptical of wearing plastic in my mouth, but I did place my trust in the knowledge of my orthodontist and the reputation of this product, however, I feel I should have trusted my original instinct and avoided these like all hell.

My mouth was dry and the corners of my mouth were cracked. I prayed for answers because I was feeling like this could lead to a heart attack with the tightness in my chest and palpation getting worst. Fate caused me to not wear my invisaligns for one day. I actually forgot to put them on. I began to feel better, the palpitations subsided by at least 30%. I then searched for possible allergic reactions reported by other invisalign users and I arrived here! Thank you so much for posting because I felt so isolated and that maybe this was just in my head.

I am dreading having to wear these invisalign trays for 8 hours every night for the rest of my life. I can only taste some foods and, sure, I have lost weight, because I can't taste most foods. Eating a fine meal would be wasted on me. I eat because I need nutrition, and wouldn't if I didn't need to to live. The inside of my entire mouth and my lips are dry, swollen, and irritated. I can't continue to use the trays if this is how I will be, for the rest of my life. It's almost impossible to explain to my doctor. I literally can feel the 'folding' of the tissue inside my mouth when I purse my lips. It's horrible.

The first 2 weeks that I started Invisalign my mouth was really itchy. I mentioned the itching to my orthodontist 3 days in and said that I hope I’m not allergic to them. She said that she had never heard of anyone being allergic, but to keep her posted. She didn’t seem concerned or to really take it seriously. I kept wearing them and after a few weeks the itching went away. Fast forward to August, 3 months later. I start feeling like I maybe I’m developing allergy’s like hay fever or something. My nose is runny and I’m sneezing, but I’m not sick. Then I start feeling like I can’t breath, like someone is sitting on my chest and my breathing is restricted. My belly out of nowhere, overnight got bloated (August 22-Nov.)and stayed bloated everyday. I have notice for months that I am really anxious, for seemingly no reason. I don’t feel like myself. I don’t feel comfortable in my own skin. I have felt anxiety and depression that I have never experienced my whole life. & my PMS has been worse and worse each month. I went to two different doctors trying to figure out what was going on with me. I did not attribute any of this to Invisalign until my husband realized one day that maybe I was having an allergic reaction to them. That all of these issues occurred after using Invisalign for a few months. I was on aligner #25 when I decided to make an appointment with an allergist. And on that same day I decided to take my aligners out. For the first time in months I slept without them in. The next day I could already feel somewhat of a difference. I was not instantly all better, but I could tell a reduction in some of my symptoms. It has now been 21 days since taking them out and I would say I’m probably 30% better. I’m still not back to normal. I had my allergist appointment today. He had me do a breathing test. He said my lungs are strong and should recover. It was really hard to breath into that tube. I could tell just doing the breathing test, that I don’t have my full lung capacity. He gave me an inhaler with prednisone to take everyday for 14 days. He said I should feel a little better each day and hopefully will be back to normal after the 14 days, but that some of the respiratory problems may come back. He said he could do some skin tests using the Invisalign plastic, but that I probably wouldn’t want to continue wearing them even if the test was negative, so it may not make sense to do those tests. I agree. I can feel the difference since taking them out, so it’s pretty obvious that they are the cause. The prednisone inhaler seemed like it helped me somewhat. I started to feel like I was about 50% better. Some days it wasn’t hard to breath anymore, but than some days still were difficult. I went to see my regular dentist(not my orthodontist) although he is also an orthodontist and works with Invisalign as well. I told him about what happened, that I was having breathing issues from my Invisalign trays and that I have felt somewhat better since taking them out. That I have not been given a refund yet, but was told that I could get a partial refund. During my appointment he took care of getting my attachments off. He said that they could be effecting me as well, causing some of the allergy. He also said that after they are off, I will probably feel worse again due to how the attachments come off. They use a super cold tool which causes the attachments to become a white powder that gets all over. They were careful to have me wash my mouth several times during the process to try to eliminate it getting in my system, but of course there’s really no stopping it. Sure enough, after I got home I felt sick. It was hard to breath and I felt weak. I rested the rest of the day. The next day I still had a hard time breathing but felt somewhat better. Today, is really hard to breath. It seems I have sent myself backwards getting the attachments off, but it was definitely necessary to get them out of my mouth. I don’t know if I will need about her round of prednisone to help me start to get better again or what I should do.

I woke at 3.00am with my glands so swollen that my skin was stretched tight around my whole neck and breathing was somewhat restricted. I removed the invisalign immediately and noticed a reduction in swelling within the hour and almost gone in 6hrs. I then looked on line and have found several sites that report issues. I was going to try them again in the daytime tomorrow though after reading these comments no longer feel that would be the right choice. Chemicals in the mouth for 22hrs a day does not seem to be real smart practice. Just posted this to keep everybody aware of issues.

They had me drink a numbing agent for my esophagus (to see if that was where the pain was coming from and it was). I was diagnosed with GERD and given Omeprazole / Prilosec (which I did NOT take!). I was told it was stress related and that I needed to be calm. I am not stressed and I have always been healthy so this just didn't make sense to me. I did a little searching online and found this website and see several comments describing my symptoms. I then found the name of the plastic Invisalign uses (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate & 1.6-hexanediol); in which chemicals like formaldehyde and lithium aluminum hydride are used in its production. With that all said, I took the trays out 36 hours ago and am feeling better. Went to my Homeopathic Chiropractor yesterday for a detox agent. I am hopeful I will have 100% recovery soon. Invisalign really needs to share the potential effects of the use of their product, with their customers. I could have stopped its use 2 weeks ago if I had been informed. It would have saved time worry, time, medical bills, travel expenses and of coarse, my health.

I have blurred vision which I couldn't understand either. It breaks my heart to read these comments. We were all so hopeful to start these treatments only to be lied to and poisoned in the process. I'm grateful to you all for speaking out. Otherwise I may never have put the breathing difficulties and other symptoms down to the Invisalign. I did tell my dentist about the cuts and swelling and lack of taste and smell but she ignored it. Why does the FDA not have more power then this? Invisalign should have to pay for this!

I started getting sick three days after I started invisalign. Sore throat, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, cold and hot sweats, Tests for COVID and strep came back negative. Took out my trays.

My taste and smell is hardly there anymore what is taste terrible I can no longer tolerate the taste of meat. I have lost 70 lbs. I pray for the day this thing comes off! I have also broke many of my teeth from the constant grinding in which I have paid for those fillings! Maybe this does work for some but this has been this worse nightmare for me! This is the short story of it much of it being untold. Maybe look it rapid braces or another alternative? I would not suggest this after my experience, but goodness I would hope this don’t happen to many! I still do not feel it right for them to make us tough it out! As a single mother this has been a very scary experience one I’m still questioning:(

As someone who has never had any health problems, work out regularly, healthy diet, non smoker, non drinker... this is clearly something to do with the treatment. I look pale, my eyes look beyond tired. The #1 sign something is wrong is my lack of motivation and willpower. I’ve become so lazy I don’t workout, I have no appetite, when I don’t wear them for 3-6 hours I start feeling normal again... I feel a “micro sweat” like a permanent panic or anxiety... especially on the forehead, almost feverish, and my hair line has tingling sensations all day long. My pre-existing joint injury that lead to poor circulation in my right foot has WORSENED. Definitely reaps havoc on our immune systems for some reason... should be thoroughly investigated before it gets more people irreversibly sick.

I started invisalign less than a month ago and after only few days I experimented some sort of migraines and a cough. My stomach was bloated. I started to feel extremely tired and a bit down and though it might be the flu. After 2 weeks I had a severe episode of vomiting with tangling feeling in my hands, feet and legs. My mouth and tongue were numbed. I had at the same time an awful migraine... thought it was a nasty virus. Was pretty happy about the nausea... in a week I have lost 6.7 pounds but can barely hold a soup. I went to the doctor when I was coughing continuously some infected mucus and barely could walk without feeling dizzy (I haven’t seen a doctor in a decade. I don’t smoke. Don’t drink. I practice running and I eat a very healthy diet).... the doctor thought it was a flu who degenerated into a bad infection. He gave me under a strong antibiotic. I started to feel better but the feelings of nausea was still strong. The cough and the shortness of breath still present but the fever went away. Two nights ago I felt like dying in my bed. Another round of dry asthmatic cough and instinctively I removed my Invisalign’s... only to notice that... my cough stopped immediately. I waited a bit and everything seemed to calm down. I did wake up every night after 4 hours of sleep. The next day my nausea was gone and I could restart to eat again. This things is a straight poison... I’m glad I found your website, it seems that a lot of info about Invisalign are hard to find.

Never in a million did I think I'd have this experience, but when you really stop and think-- You shouldn't have this foreign plastic in your mouth for hours and hours.

Dentist saw me that day and said I was so swollen it looked like mumps ! But dentist said knew it was not mumps. . Was put on even stronger and higher dose of antibiotics. Saw a different dentist who said it was his opinion that it was from an allergic reaction to the plastic aligners. All my lymph nodes in neck are swollen. Stopping treatment. Wish I had researched and found this site sooner.

I was 6 months in when I started having severe headaches, ringing in my ears, swelling in lower lip, nervousness (hands shaking), and jaw pain. My lower front tooth became loose and I feared that I may lose the tooth. I then noticed gum recession at the 2 lower front teeth, which I did not have prior to Invisalign. My dentist told me that it was going to happen anyways, at some point. Needless to say, it got so bad that I had the buttons removed from my teeth and discontinued the Invisalign. I then had to go to a surgeon to repair the receded gums - $2000.00 out of pocket cost. Invisalign - $5000.00. I like many others came to the conclusion that my health was much more important than the pretty smile. My advice to others: DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND RESEARCH.....READ REVIEWS (Good & THE BAD). I have to wonder if moving the teeth in such a short amount of time, along with the plastic in your mouth every day for 22 hours a day is just plain wrong! Traditional braces move the teeth over a span of 2-5 years?

I just spent $2000 and I cant use them anymore. I am very upset about this. I'll call tomorrow to see how I can be accompdated. Thanks everybody for sharing your experiences

It started with slightly swollen, sore red lips, dry mouth and throat, as well as a tingly feeling on my tongue. I just figured it was me getting used to it. I continued to wear them with the minor issues, but the throat discomfort started to get worse and I was coughing some too. My throat got a lil sore towards the end of the sixth week with some swelling. I went to bed that night and woke up to swollen lymph nodes under my chin and in my neck. I also felt like my throat swelling was worse and had some trouble swallowing. I removed them that morning and the swelling went down fairly well over the next few days, but still flares up sometimes. I also developed shortness of breath, wheezing and feeling like I have a band around my chest with some coughing. It is an awful feeling. It can be hard to do physical activity and still is sometimes. I'm a pretty active person too. It also causes anxiety, sleep problems, blood pressure and heart rate changes. I'm hoping that this all eventually goes away. These things should be illegal. There is no safe thin plastic to leave in your mouth like this! Please do traditional braces or keep the smile that you have. Your quality of life is way more important!

My lips became swollen and having a simple conversation was almost impossible without slurring. I stopped using the aligners but the symptoms became more dominant and more unbearable. Due to the coronavirus seeing a dentist was almost impossible Until it became serious. I was examined and told I had an allergic reaction to the aligners and open sores from a poor fit. I developed an infection in my mouth as well I was given an oral mouthwash with an antihistamine and lidocaine for the pain. I’m praying this helps but as of now I do not see much improvement. I will not use them anymore and I am requesting a full refund

Also have headaches, neck pain, racing heart, chest pain and heaving breathing etc. I stopped wearing them 2 days ago and by today I was able to eat a fairly normal meal. I am going to leave them off for a few more days and if I continue to feel better, no more of this for me!

I am 47 years old, I have been wearing invisalign for two years, just had my first endoscopy and the results came back with gastric intestinal metaplasia (pre-cancerous lesions that puts people at a low risk for stomach cancer). I have had multiple doctor appointments, X-rays, supplements, Gas X, upcoming gastroenterologist appointment, etc. I have had heartburn perhaps 3 or 4 times in my entire life, so gastric issues are foreign to me. I look as if I am 4 months pregnant (I’m 65), and am so uncomfortable by the end of the day, I have to wear sweats. The timing is such that I can possibly associate it with the use of the trays, and will stop wearing them beginning today. I am making an appointment with my orthodontist in going forward. I have little faith that he will agree with my assumption of issues with the Invisaligns but feel confident, after reading others experiences, I have gotten to the crux of my gastric problems.

I went to a highly recommended orthodontist and he showed me on his high end machine what my teeth look like and what it will look like after I get theses liners. I was ready to start. The first week of using the liner I felt nauseous and very tired but I attributed that to the saliva buildup I was experiencing and nothing more. As the months progressed I developed a horrible coughing which gave me terrible headaches and I felt weak and tired. I was coughing so hard I broke a blood vessel in my eye. I thought I was just sick. I went to visit my daughter in NJ for ten days. While there I was having terrible symptoms like pneumonia or flu so I went to an urgent care center and I was given flu medication even though the swab didn’t show that I had the flu. I didn’t get better and somehow managed to fly home so I could go to my GP who said I probably have pneumonia and he gave me cough medication which I’m still taking and will stop in a few days. I also took Mucinex and Tylenol. My husband has been very worried about my health so he did some investigating online and found others with my symptoms. All of which were wearing Invisalign. I sent an email to my orthodontist and he replied back to me saying that in all his 19 years of practice only 3-4 people have had a reaction and it usually occurs at the very beginning of using the liners and he’d notice if I was allergic. He suggested I stop wearing the liners for 2-3 days to see if I felt better and to call him. Well I did take the liners out yesterday and I woke up this morning without the horrific coughing. I slept well last night. I can’t tell you how much better I fell this morning. My GP set up an appointment a few weeks ago for me to see a pulmonologist about my coughing which I’m going to this morning. I’d like to know what materials are used to make the Invisalign liners. That’s going to be my next question to my orthodontist. I hope that the plastic isn’t harmful to my health long term.

I was an 11 year survivor of Breast Cancer and I am careful about the amount of estrogenics in plastic. I was assured that there was not any. I had small issues but I was referred to Mayo for an MRI for unrelated issues and they saw a large shadow. After being an 11 year survivor to a low stage cancer, my lymph nodes in my neck are 91-100 percent (hghest range) estrogen. I am now battling metastatic Breast Cancer. Because of where my tumors are in my neck, near my thyroid, I asked pulmonologist is these inflamed nodes were in a pathway for something I would have had in my mouth. His answer was it is a perfect pathway and that was when they just thought I had swollen nodes. If I had not been a survivor they would not have done a biopsy of the nodes and found that they are estrogen based cancer. This is simply to raise awareness, and not to raise fear. Invisalign is made of MDI polyeurothane plastic and in 2007 the World Health Association said use of this plastic should never be discussed for oral use. Also, one study we found showed that MDI polyeurothane caused bronchial tumors and collapsed lungs in rats. I am writing this from Mayo where I am for more testing. I was diagnosed last year at this time. For me, it is not worth the risk.

Four months ago I started having issues where I felt dizzy sporadically. I do not wear daily glasses but my vision started to get gradually off. I can see but I have to focus manually. It is as if my brain doesn't automatically tell my eyes to focus. Within the last month I have started to lose my sense of smell on some things. Then I started to have a foul smell in my nose that just comes randomly. It is as if it is inside. I even go as far as take a shower to clear my airways, and wash my hair when I smell it. It is still there. It smells like spoiled turkey or slight rot. I had sores in my mouth in the previous month, then sore tongue followed. I had a sore throat and constant runny nose. My orthodontist told me none of my symptoms were related to the invisalign. He advised they are safe. He never mentioned any hypo allergenic version. When I told him my sense of smell seems directly connected sense they are in my mouth. He damn near laughed it off as if it couldn't possibly be true. In addition to all this, I have not been keeping track of things well. I am usually great with keeping track of things and order. But the last month I notice I have something like a brain fog. I don't smoke. I don't do any drunks. I barely drink twice a month. I workout and eat right. I have never felt this in 40 years. I feel completely off. I have been to my General practitioner, the Nurse practitioner, the gyno, and the Optometrist. They all have no idea why I am feeling like this. This entire ordeal is mimicking the Roundup cases that surface in the most recent news. For years the people were subject to what was told to be "safe" for them but look how that ended. I took those aligners out asap when I found this yesterday. I am taking all this back to my Orthos office and demanding some refund. I would rather have a small gap than a damaged neuro system. I mean WTH. Why wouldn't this be apart of the normal warning conversation... oh wait, I didn't get any warning information. And I DID ask about side affects. I will see what happens as I leave these off and let you all know. This is detrimental and needs to be addressed.

I did not connect invisalign to these symptoms at first but noticed when I took the trays out for the few days the symptoms would subside. I have seen physicians to rule out other causes of these symptoms and all tests are negative. I have had these out for approximately 2 months and most of the symptoms have subsided but I still have some residual symptoms such as burning sensations in my hands and feet. My dentist and I have contacted the company but they are not responding to my telephone call or email.

There are side effects they do not warn you about.

Now what to do??

Even my skin became tough and I had terrible nausea and abdominal pain. I proceeded to have an elevated lipase and was hospitalized for pancreatitis. I was a healthy, normal weight full time working woman prior to this. I live a no alcohol healthy lifestyle. I ended up having my gall bladder removed but continued to have pancreatitis. When I realized I was either allergic to or being poisoned by the plastic trays in my mouth I removed them immediately one night when my heart was beating so slowly I thought I would die. I had a small intestine biopsy which showed unexplained allergic reaction. When allergy tested at a later date I am not allergic to anything else. My health is compromised to this day and I continue to have abdominal pain and nausea but my color is improved and my hair has recovered and my skin. I wish my dentist had known to have me stop use when I became so gravely ill.

I had invisalign for 9 months and had severe allergic reactions that my dentist said was impossible to react a month out. Almost died. Went to hospital 3 times, told doctors they basically laughed it off.Five years later now an autoimmune disease as my body couldn't deal with 9 months of hives, facial swelling, itch that was so bad.

I noticed the tray itself has sharp edges that cut the underside of my tongue. I stopped using the appliance thinking I would heal and then try again. The "buttons" that are placed on my teeth are also cutting into my oral mucosa. I'm going on around 5-6 weeks of constant outbreaks of excruciating ulcers, swollen lips. I am horribly fatigued just from dealing with the pain. Every time I start to heal from one outbreak another starts. I have had up to 4 ulcers in every part of my mouth and tongue at the same time (unprecedented). I seem to also have a gum infection in one area that I manged wuite well before with daily flossing etc. I have had swollen lymph nodes which I assumed was my immune system trying to deal with the overwhelming tissue damage, but now I have laryngitis (never had it in my life and I am 61). I am normally a very healthy athletic woman with lots of stress management skills but this is really upsetting. I see the dentist tomorrow, and I am pretty much DONE. Especially after reading all of this. I guess crooked teeth are part of my destiny. Of corse I have already paid 5000$!

I went to the Invisalign website and it says they are non toxic..but that's a lie. Im 39 and never had breathing problems in my life! why are these toxic ingretients not listed on the website? why wasn't I told? The trays are taken out, no refund given on the trays, just more medical bills from the hospital visit. its beyond me that they would use this stuff in the mouth. Saying something is FDA approved doesn't mean they went through product testing. I found reports on MAUDE (complaints reported to the FDA) showing MANY other people had been sent to the hospital because of difficulty breathing, sore throat, throat closing, dry mouth as well! For the billions Invisalign has made in profit they should offer organic materials. For example, use edible plastic made from seaweed. Its clear and can last 2 weeks before degrading. I know better than to put chemicals in my mouth. Especially cancer causing ones. This is probably why Invisalign makes it near impossible to find out what the trays are made of. Additionally, I read reports as far back as 2010 that the FDA warned Invisalign that the aligners were causing serious reactions in users. Ill never put that plastic back in my mouth ever again. Ill live with crooked teeth.

I had been having headaches and neck spasms before the trays. After the trays the headaches became migraines, debilitating to say the least. At about tray 16 I noticed I was developing a rash around my mouth, in the corners and under the lower lip. Thought it was from the dry winter air. Tried everything to clear it up. I could feel the rash start burning. Did not equate it with the trays. It would go away partially and then I would feel the burning and know immediately that I would have a bright red semi-circle around my mouth. My tongue also started hurting and was irritated. It hurt even drinking water. The headaches were still persistent, and I was starting to loose my appetite as food tasted bad and it was increasingly difficult to chew, I developed stomach problems, a cough and dry heaves as a result. To top off all that, my dentist was never present when the trays were handed to me in the office and my attachments were never checked. I was on set 24 of 35 when I started complaining about the fit of the trays. At set 29 the dentist's tech actually looked at my teeth and said that the alignment was off and took more impressions. When I went in to pick the next set up I was told that some of the attachments had been improperly placed and I needed some more attachments and would have to wear another 24 sets of trays. I, too, have sensitivities to the weirdest stuff and it got worse when I started this treatment. Never connected the two. Although I did have a bit of a reaction in the beginning just thought I was overreacting. But I did have bouts of facial hives, which I put down to stress and would take massive doses of Benadryl to counteract them. This seemed to work to alleviate the pain and anxiety that it caused to an extent, but I still did not equate the signs and symptoms with the trays. I did notice that as I went through the trays that they were getting dirty looking and discolored sooner and sooner. I started soaking them in Hydrogen peroxide after reading that 30 minutes or more would help clean the trays. When I had the tech take the impressions she said I would have to wear the current set, number 29 for another 3 weeks, which turned into 6 weeks by the time they received the new set of 24. I was concerned at that point about the bacteria and was soaking the trays every day. If the dental practice had been taking care of me properly some of this may have been avoided, but now after reading the stories of suffering and pain at this and several other sites, that I will not be going on with the treatment. It was a foolish idea I suppose to think that a medical professional would have my best interests at heart. The treatment cost $5,175, which I am of course still paying on. :( Hopefully the dentist will give me some sort of refund and remove the attachments. Am going in tomorrow. Wish me luck.

I have been on antibiotic after antibiotic, mouth wash and even got referred to an oral surgeon. The only time it gets better is when I do not weare my Invisalign. I spent a lot of time, money and illness on this. I'm so close to being done but I can't deal with feeling this way. I'm a single mom with two special needs children. I have worked in dental since I was 17 years old and simply stocking rooms, and am now 42. It's all I know, professionally. But, as I sit here, in bed, at 2am, with super swollen lips, I am in total disbelief! Here is my story. The orthodontist that we refer our patients to was so kind as to offer to realign my teeth for me, February, 16'! Note: After a first, successful round of Invisalign in 2003, followed by 9 years of wearing Invisalign retainers at night, religiously, and WITHOUT any side effects, my retainers had broken. After about a year and a half of not wearing them, my teeth had shifted, considerably, which brings us to today. Right about the time I received my first set of trays, in February of this year, I began to have a significant occurrence of hives. Full body, head to toe. I immediately began taking antihistamines, Benadryl, Zyrtec, Allegra, alternating. Had no idea, till this very night, that this could be from Invisalign!!! My hives were so intense that if I skipped even one day of antihistamines, I'd wake with an entire body full of raised, burning, itchy hives, ALL OVER. Because my insurance is horrible, and specialists are expensive, I chalked them up to seasonal allergies (that I had also experienced during a majorly stressful time in my life, 16 years ago, also resulting in hives), so, I continued to treat my symptoms with antihistamines. However, the seasons have changed, and I am still medicating, since February! Am still medicating, to this very day! Now, this lip swelling thing has been off and on, and getting progressively worse, throughout all of this, but I hadnt connected it (till tonight) to the retainers. I thought it was my lip balm. Thought, maybe, the face masks that we wear at the dental office? So, I have discontinued use of both of those things, for about a month, now. (Wearing a face shield, instead of a mask, while treating patients). No recent swellings of my lips, so I hoped I had solved the problem. Till tonight. Put my new retainer in, around 9pm, tonight (tray #3 of 7, for this newest 'revision'), and just woke with a hugely swollen lip, swollen tongue (both, rt side), and extreme tightness in my chest! So, I began to search the Web to see if there were any others out there, like me, with this same experience. (Imagine my surprise). And, yes, I also have been having inflamed lymph nodes in my neck (thyroid area) and a few, the size of golf balls, a few months ago, in the back of my neck! Chalked those up to a history of cat dander allergy, or seasonal stuff?! I am astounded that after reading all of your posts, (there are many!), these crazy symptoms are definitely related, and due to the Invisalign trays!!! It all makes sense now! I am in shock. And, I must say, a bit embarrassed, that I didn't connect all these dots till now! Thank God for the Web and for all you amazing people that took the time to share your stories. Forgot to add that my lips have also been significantly dry and burning, lately. And, with removing lip balms, of any kind, from my routine, they have felt even worse! So, now what? Going to call my orthodontist as soon as the sun is up!!! Oh, and I'd better get these retainers out, stat! Sincere thanks to you all!

I had most of the symptoms in the beginning, but I noticed after a month of suffering in my bed from fever, headaches, servere cough, swollen throat, low energy, tired, and allergies, I thought it was from food poisoning, since a friend and son had it. I have never been that sick in my life, I thought maybe it was in the air. Someone mentioned the loss of taste. I have that with the loss of smell. I now have this strange smell and it's hard to enjoy food. It's like a cheesy/chemical taste and smell, its stronger depending on my surroundings, like smoke the smell gets worse. I also went from 145-150 lbs to now 121 Ibs. Later I had no idea what was causing everything. I thought maybe it was Cancer, Candida, or Diabetics. I wonder if it affected my mental health, since I was confused and had a hard time remembering things. I am so grateful to The Lord for directing me to look closer to the dangers of the trays. I'm surprised the dentist did not mention the hypoloallergic trays, or share other people's side effects, and share the chemical ingredients. I removed them three days ago, now experiencing itch and headaches. My ortho. office recommended a fluoride toothpaste: Colgate, PrevilDent 5000, which I will stop using as well, and go back to Tom's non-fluoride toothpaste, I heard fluoride is very bad. Dentists say use only a little bit, but if you brush your teeth more than twice a day, the fluoride adds up. Thank you all so much for your comments!!

There was no reason to have a panic attack and they had never happened previously. I went to the fire station to have my vitals checked. Oxygen levels were fine, heart rate up a bit and having PVCs - they suggested I see an allergist. I made it home; something told me to google Invisalign and allergic reactions. I took out the braces and took a Claritin. Started to feel more normal after half hour or so. Left the braces out, had to take the Claritin daily (still do even though the braces have been out now for many months) plus additional vitamin C for the anti histamine effect. Did see allergist, explained what had happened. She did some tests; ended up doing a nebulizer treatment to increase lung air flow. A blood tryptase level came back elevated; this can be associated with an increased risk of severe allergic reactions. My younger sister, who gets allergy shots weekly, also tested with an elevated tryptase level. Interestingly enough, I had additional labs, IgE and RAST testing and they all came back completely NEGATIVE. No food or environmental allergies (they don't test for chemicals like whatever is used in the braces). My orthodentist had a retainer made for me, stainless steel with some type of plastic (different from the invisalign material) for the part that is in the back of the retainer. Within minutes of inserting the retainer my throat tightened so I yanked it out and immediately took 6 additional grams of vitamin C. Symptoms eased after half hour or so. When I read online about some other people who had had reactions, they commented about the sense of panic and anxiety; some had local swelling or blisters. No one had warned me about any of this before I started. I now notice on the TV commercials for the Invisalign there is a caution about possible rare allergic reactions. Too bad I couldn't be refunded for the unused trays. This treatment is EXPENSIVE.

Has anyone experienced feeling overheated? Excessive sweating? Difficulty breathing or asthma like symptoms? Since I started Invisaligns a year ago I have excessive sweating day and night. I have never had trouble breathing before I started wearing Invisaligns. Then I see this site. I will read the MSDS sheet on the plastic. Why wasn't I given any material that would warn me of this?

If that were my only problem, I would be fine with it. However, I have been getting recurrent cold sores. These cold sores, if that is really what they are, don't respond the Abreva or Lysine like previous colds sores did. I have also gotten them within a few hours of having impressions taken for the Invisalign. That got me to wondering if the cold sores and dry mouth was caused by my Invisalign. I did a search and found this site. I am on my second set of aligners and about two and a half months away from finishing so I might just try to tough it out. I am hoping that the retainer won't cause the same problem. At least I will only have to wear that at night. Does anyone know if the retainer is made out of the same material?

BTW, can you replace the trays with hypoallergenic version? Thank you, Young

I had a similar reaction within minutes of getting Invisalign . My lips and gums burned , I was dizzy , had flu-like symptoms( sore throat , achy , chills ) , and my neck got stiff . I went to the ER and asked me what I had today and I told them Invisalign was done and they said it was an allergic reaction . Very scary !!! Is anything being done about this ?

Although I did experience allergic reactions, mine were isolated to my mouth area alone, specifically my lips, corners of my mouth and the skin surrounding my lips. It definitely caused some pain and discomfort, but it was so unsightly and very noticeable. The dry mouth with wearing the trays was beyond annoying, so I initially thought the chapped lips and mouth irritation was a result of that. One mouth corner was really irritated...I thought I was getting a cold sore, but never happened. Took some Acyclovir just in case, no improvement. Also took Lysine supplement and applied Lysine ointmemt, also no help. My lips felt hot, and I had a red ring on the skin surrounding my mouth, which also felt hot. I could always tell when the redness got worse without looking because of that hot feeling. One corner of my mouth was just raw. I was afraid to open my mouth that much because the skin felt so tight, I thought it would crack and bleed. My whole mouth area just hurt (but not inside...no sores, no swollen tongue). I also don't recall any coldlike symptoms, but I also have allergies so maybe it didn't register with me. I Googled for dry mouth/irritation with the Invisalign for suggestions and learned about the history with allergic reactions to invisalign and that there was a hypoallergenic version. I hit Invisalign up on Twitter asking for advice bc I was having a reaction. They responded quickly, told me to stop wearing the trays, contact my dentist and follow a link to fill out infomercial they could contact me directly. Had a dentist appnt a cple days later and showed him the problem. Invisalign replaced all of my trays with the so-called hypoallergenic tryas. Same thing happened within 8 hours of wearing those. They said they have, one more option/type of tray and I'll get those in a week. BUT, this 3rd option is simply the first or at least a previous version. And the only difference b/t the 1st trays I got and the "hypoallergenic" is a slightly different polyurethane. At least Invisalign has offered to give me a full refund if this 3rd set doesn't work. Still sucks bc my teeth have already moved and my night guard no longer fits and it's $800 for a new one. I wish I never started with Invisalign at all. The redness still hasn't fully healed and still often gets inflamed on one side, and that's after only having the 2nd set in for 8 hours over the past three weeks or so. Starting to think it will never go away. The Rx my dermatologist give me for it is over $300 (not covered by my insurance...and it cost me a $70 co-pay) so I can't afford to fill the script.

I wore the retainers for a another day thinking it would be better which never happened. Called my Orthodontist and he reassured me things would be all right. Could not stand it and took the retainers out for a few days. The symptoms subsided a lot but did not completely disappeard. That was when I thought that I have an allergic reaction to the retainers. After the symptoms calm down I started wearing the retainers again for about 3 days which were a nightmare. All the symptoms from before and many others appeared, like head aches, ears aches, jaws aches, nausea, stomach cramps and diarrhea ,mouth ulcers.dried mouth, dizziness. I stopped wering the retainers for 2 days and the symptoms got a bit better. Called my Orthodontist again and he told me to wear the retainers in intervals of 2 hours to get used to them and that I should see him to try to fix the retainers. When I told him that I have an allergic reaction he said that it is impossible because my retainers are Hypoallegenic. I put back the retainers back on my teethe and the symptoms were back within a short time like minutes. I am so mad at the orthodontist for dismissing my complains. I am going to see him in a few days and try to get a refund for my money.Without any doubt I am not going to wear these invisalign retainers.

I started having a shortness of breath and I also felt completely exhausted even though I was not tired. That same day I noticed a swollen lymph node under my armpit and tiny sores on my gum line, however it wasnt where the invisalign touched. I then googled mouth sores associated with invisalign and found this website! I immediately took them out. Most of the symptoms have subsided but I still feel like there is something stuck in my throat and chest. I seen my ortho today (Jan 5 2016) and he assures me that it is not invisalign but I dont believe him and Im not willing to chance it again like he suggest I should.

I demanded they send me to a skin specialist and they diagnosed me with dermatitis which is an allergy/allergic reaction. She advised I stop using Invisalign and after a month of discontinuing my huge purple spot on my lip has faded tremendously to where I don't have to wear lip stick to cover it. But it is still slightly noticable. Not to mention my testh are now Crooked because I had to doscontinue. So much money wasted I pray they make this right by refunding my money or something this is insane how much stress I have gone through trying to find out why I am having a hard time breathing let alone have a huge purple spot on my upper lip that can't be disguised with the darkest lip stick smh dot ever do Invisalign so not worth it!! I may have to sue this is insane all these complaints and I wasn't even notified that there are potential health risks associated with Invisalign.

I joined the Invisalign bandwagon in 2012 and had many issues with the trays cutting the inside of my mouth. However, my plight escalated to the extreme. After almost 1 1/2 years of the Invisalign saga of discomfort, I finally said enough is enough! My tongue was killing me 2 months before I stopped. I believed it to be an irritation from my tongue rubbing up against the trays on the left side of my mouth. However, after we stopped the treatment, my tongue persisted to hurt immensely. I ended up going to an orthodontist (a dentist applied the Invisalign), to help put my teeth back in place and hopefully stop the discomfort in my tongue by doing that. However, after being n braces for 15 months, trying different tweaking methods to try to give me some relief, there has been only a little relief. My tongue burns constantly. I went to an ENT specialist to check my tongue and he said it was perfectly healthy to the eye. I went to my dentist and he said the same thing about the health of my tongue. BUT, I feel the continuous friction of the rubbing up against my teeth. Finally, my dentist today believe that there is some nerve damage caused by the invisalign that is giving me the burning sensation. What to do now? I am still searching for that answer.

Well the worse has still to come, my immune system started reacting to many things and I suddenly also developed metal allergies and I was feeling metal in my mouth and was giving me bad allergic reaction as my throat felt like flooding up so I immediately was getting Benadryl. Well after 2 weeks I started understaffing that it was Invisalign that was causing this, so I tried to not wear the trays for about 3-4 days and my symptoms were great,y improving so I called my doctor and he said that it is rare but that the have hypoallergenic ones, I absolutely did not want to try them, I was dine with this. Well the main problem is that it seems that the plastic trays intoxicated my body and my immune system got more sensitive and started reacting to almost everything which brought me several times to the hospital and has to take cortisone and other medicines to call this down. After almost 5 months of stopping using the Invisalign I still have the consequences of the 2 weeks I have been using them. Why they do not give the hypoallergenic ones since the beginning? What there is no warning about these reactions? Invisalign is a scam, I would not suggest it to no one. I think it would be right to sue them, it is not correct for us to go through something horrible like this. Good luck to everybody!!

Well, first, let me say I WISH I would have found and read this site PRIOR to Invisalign. I've been in treatment for breast cancer and after the ordeal of that was mostly done, stupid me... I decided to straighten my teeth. I do have to say, my teeth were not very crooked and was not noticeable. Knowing I would not be able to do regular braces, I thought I'd try Invisalign. I spoke with my dentist and my orthdontist and they thought this would work. When I was fitted for the trays, I ended up having 8 upper and 14 lower "attachments" put on some of my teeth. In case any of you don't know what this is, it's little dots of dental cement that they put on the teeth so the Invisalign moves those teeth. I started my trays approximately 6 weeks ago. The next day, the inside of my mouth was bleeding, very sore, inside of my lips was starting to swell, and it felt like the trays were cutting me. I called the orthodontist immediately and went back in. He trimmed the trays and we thought everything was fine. Over the next few days, my lips hurt, mouth was bleeding on and off, and as many of you mentioned, I started getting a sore throat and cough. I called the orthodontist again. Another trip in and more trimming and "adjusting" the trays. Also the attachments were cutting the inside of my mouth. This routine continued through the 1st two weeks. Then I was to go to tray # 2. I started tray # 2 and more of the same painful symptoms and another trip to the orthodontist. He also filed down some of the attachments. Two weeks ago I started tray # 3. The same day my mouth began to hurt so bad I thought something serious was wrong with me. And also, more of that cough that won't go away. I called the orthodontist and he had gone on vacation. His office said to leave tray # 2 in for now until he could look at my issues. Last weekend, my tongue, which has been uncomfortable the entire time, began to swell on one side. I removed the trays and left them out of my mouth. My tongue has a "boil" or pimple type area on the under left side. It is finally beginning to calm down but is still very sore and PAINFUL! Also it is bleeding on and off. I saw the ortho today and he said it's rare to have a reaction to the trays but that some people do. I told him I've not had the trays in for 4 days and my mouth is finally beginning to calm down but still hurts. He took pictures of my tongue to show the Ivisalign representative so they can document my reaction. As far as I know, they are going to give me back the money I've already paid - $4,000. I wish the dental doctor's would completely explain that you can have more medical problems from Invisalign. If I had know this was all possible I would have NEVER done this. I'm just glad I did not continue using this product and this has only been 6 weeks! I'm so sorry everyone here has gone through such pain!

This meant I was changing my trays on average every 5 days. Within a week of wearing invisalign I developed a severe sore throat, ear pain like I had never experienced (think ice picks being jabbed into my ears) and a high fever. I chalked it up to strep throat being as how I am a nurse and work in an emergency department. My primary care physician wrote me a prescription for antibiotics. I finished the course of antibiotics and the sore throat persisted along with the ear pain and seriously swollen lymph nodes, hard as rocks. I revisited my pcp several times over the following two months. I mentioned to the Orthodontist in each visit about the sore throat and the ear pain. He never made a suggestion or inquired about my symptoms. I was given three additional rounds of different antibiotics and steroids along with allergy medications by my PCP. I was run down, short of breath, an tired of being in pain. It was literally wreaking havoc on my life. I finally made a trip to an ENT, only to have a horrible scope pushed through my nares and down into my throat all to find nothing. Approximately three months into treatment I considered that it might just be the invisalign. I didn't want it to be, I desperately wanted to perfect my smile. I took the invisalign out and discontinued using for three days. Symptoms were subsiding. I called the ortho to have the buttons removed within that same week. My symptoms went away instantly. However, Im still out the already $4k I paid for the treatment, and an additional $1500 chasing other doctors around to get to the bottom of my symptoms. I am a nurse and used my own common sense to determine I was having an allergic reaction when an orthodontist, general physician and an ear nose throat specialist could not. So frustrating. I will strongly advise against this product after reading everything I have regarding its composition and health hazards.

So I contacted my dentist about it and he told me to stop using the aligners for a day or two. But then I wasn't too sure if it's the aligners that caused my terrible coughing or just the pollens. So I told him I'm just going to tough it out coz I dont wanna go back to week 1 of using the aligners. But 10 days later and still on medications, the coughing didn't show any sign of improving. I still have the sore on the corner of my mouth, my tongue hurts, my throat itchy , I felt dizzy spells,. So I searched the net again for possible allergic reactions to Invisalign and voila, I found this website and read about all your comments and reactions! I was horrified to say the least. I didn't even wait to speak with my dentist. I took them off right away. As I write this comment, it is now 20 hours after I stopped wearing my aligners and I'm still coughing terribly with all the other issues that I mentioned I have.

Company doesn't disclose hypoallergenic trays are available but they are. Request the MDS first and learn what is in the product. It's not "just plastic" that your dentist or ortho will tell you. Huge physical health risks.

By putting two dental swabs on her bottom tray and where it ,until it losen it up to fit.I told his assistant she's 20 years old ad she not going to do that. I told her to ordr a new tray which they never did. She was told the next time you come in you will have a new tray. They always had a excuse why a new tray was not available. She went back 3 to 4 more times. Always the same story On Dec 2014. I realized he was cutting corners with my daughter. I told them how I felt and she's not coming back. I did my homework after that. It was not invisalign if it was it comes in a box with many sets of trays aligners. with her name on it. When my daughter stared crying in the car she was very upset she has to start all over. With either braces or invisalign somewhere else. It upset me so much to find out that all the ortho money was use all up from my insurance and my husband. And Next week she will have to start all over by a real orthodonist. And now I have to pay more money. Its not fair I'm fighting grievance at this moment . Not sure if I'm getting my ortho money back from both claims. I will sue him if I dont get my money back. He's a crook dentist he needs to pay for the damage he cause my daughter.Depression over this situation. He charges both insurance for the same treatment. One tray since September and on December when I spoke up. Why don't you ever have new trays for my daughter. He said because the holidays. Really since Sept 2014.

My tongue felt one afternoon as if I had burnt in but I couldn't think of anything I had eaten or drunk that was very hot. I then experience two short panic attacks and woke one night sweating. I took the trays out the cough lessoned immediately, back in it started again. I agreed with my dentist to cease wearing them immediately two days ago until it is reviewed with the manufacturer. 36hrs of not wearing them and I am still feeling nauseous and sometimes start coughing and dry retching. I feel I must be having a reaction to something toxic. I am amazed that no allergy testing is not done on such an expensive product when clearly others are suffering as well and that if there is a hypoallergenic option why is this not offered at the outset? I am not sure what to do next.

Incredibly, I just thought this was my body getting used to the trays. Then when I couldn't talk at all on day five due to intense tongue swelling which made it absolutely impossible to swallow and my tongue erupted in sores, I yanked those trays out and began to feel better pretty much within an hour. The sores are still healing, but I am myself again. Its the weekend so I can't contact my orthodontist. I payed almost $5k for these trays so he better have a solution! I started Googling Invisalign problems and I feel bad that in all my years of researching this product, I never once saw any mention of allergies and sores. I wish I had gone with regular braces at this point and am hoping my ortho recommends that as well. We will see what happens, but as it is, I will not be putting those poison pellets back in my mouth. Everyone trying to "tough it out" may be forcing your body to be on fight mode, which will lower your immune system and could trigger other illnesses. You have to be careful with allergies.

I thought I just had a really bad cold so persisted for about 2 weeks before heading to the clinic to get checked out. He said I had a viral sinus infection, so I had to do the sinus rinse and wait it out. Meanwhile I went back to the orthodontist to get him to check me out and he said it must just be a sinus problem. Then I waited again before finally being able to get in to see my regular doctor and the tests all began. Blood tests, xrays of chest and sinuses, negative. Then I decided to do some googling on the internet and found a few places of people with symptoms just like mine. Back to the orthodontist and he made me a new set of retainers and they seem to be fine except the right jaw area around the eye and top of the teeth is extremely sore. When I push on all the top teeth, they don't hurt. This morning as I write this, my right jaw area feels like it is the size of a golf ball yet it doesn't look any different. My tongue is still has a bit of a burning sensation on the right as well. I have another call into the orthodontist and we'll see how he wants to proceed now as I'm at my wits end and don't know where else to go from here.

I've done several breathing tests, been to ENTs, respirologists and done MRIs/CT scans., cancer, TB tests - they showed nothing wrong with me. I mentioned the invisaligns to the specialists but they won't hear me. A few weeks ago I got a cold - took Buckley's Complete......to my amazement the cough subsided a lot. Last week I decided to put my retainer on and the cough is back. I believe it is the plastic that is causing the cough. The scary part is I don't know how much damage the invisaligns have caused.

To tell you my story, I've completed my invisalign treatment and I'm now on retainer. They said it might take 1 year but the treatment took me little over 2 years. I couldn't say anything back because they entrapped me by having me sign all those fineprint paperworks. You are all right, I've had exact same symptoms. Got severe sore throat, overall discomfort and irritation in mouth everytime I changed new aligner. But it faded within days as I knew I'm coping certain allergic reactions to the plastic. I was asking myself to 'cope it, cope it'. Somehow I wanted to get my teeth back in shape and so I decided stay on it and be suffered. But I didn't know it would cause so many other health problems other than mouth discomfort. I spent thousands of dollars on my gastrointestinal issues I thought was totally unrelated to this allergic reaction. My physicians were clueless what's wrong with me, because tests would come normal. They prescribed me anti-anxiety pills since nothing wrong is found in me, they decided it's my stress causing all that physical problems. I denied taking anti-anxiety pill, as I'm an avid meditator and practice spiritual lifestyle. Now, I've gotten my retainer as the treatment came to it's end last year, ever since my mouth is subtly burning off and on. It's just random, the problem would vary. Sometimes it's my back of the tongue feels like burning, sometimes my lips, and sometimes I would feel if someone is squeezing my neck I mean felt tightness in my throat. They again tried to prescribe me anti-anxiety and some nasal spray. I told them I still have a bottle from my last prescription and denied am not gonna use those anxiety pill but okayed to nasal spray. Didn't do anything. So, it seems like I've been tolerating it for long time than you guys. Some of the symptoms I've had is: -Unexplained lethargy -Appetite swing -depression -panic attacks -overall mouth discomfort on every new aligner change -sore throat, sore mouth Symptoms now I have is: -subtle lip/tongue burning -throat discomfort. -lymph discomfort, ear tube irritation(I guess) -back of my throat and dull ache in the upper back spine area.. Can you guys imagine, I went to ENT to get me scoped three times in less than six months and they saw nothing wrong out there. ? One ND prescribed me strong sets of antibiotics thinking those bad guys in my tummy may be acting up? So many blood tests, stool tests, pressure etc etc.. nothing serious would come up. Yes, at certain point I thought I had cancer and demanded doctors to run those tests while doing all bloodworks, they would look at me strangely and few days later, they would convince me, "you are all right, reports are normal, don't think too much, you are stressed out, may be a change of job.. etc etc" . I'm gonna get back in touch with those orthodontist and describe all this. Probably sue them.

When I talked to my orthodontist later he said Invisalign is FDA approved and it should not be causing these kinds of problems. Now I know better, thanks to all who are sharing your experience. Like couple other people, I'd like to know where/how to get the hypoallergenic trays as my orthodontist didn't seem to know there is such a version. Beverly and Jennifer, do you know if your doctor had to contact Invisalign directly to request for the hypoallergenic trays? I'd do the same if that's the extra step I need to take to ensure I will not be suffering further because of the material used in my Invisalign trays.

I am so glad I made this connection and searched this after a sleepless night from a mysterious allergic reaction. I started invisalign 2 days ago. Thanks to all for your posts.

Along with the swelling, I experienced a burning sensation on my tounge as well as on my lips. I saw my allergist, my pcp and a GI. So far, everything has checked out fine. I was suggested to stop use of my trays and was placed on a 5 day treatment of Prednisone, though the swelling was still unexplained. My symptoms resolved after two weeks of the irritation without the use of the trays. After nearly a week without the irritation, my teeth grinding prompted me to use the tray again (unaware at this time the tray had caused the issue). The following day, the tissues in my lower mouth began a tingling sensation and presumed to enlarge again! Though not as bad as the initial reaction, it is so frustrating. It has been two days and nights without the retainer and the swelling and irritation has maintained. I have an appointment with my dentist this Friday and have placed a call to my allergist again. I am almost certain that the trays have caused this reaction now. What if anything can be done about this? SO frustrating.

I'm not an allergic person and never had asthma, so I didn't even think about the connection with the trays. I thought I was getting run down by work/stress, and under advice of my doc I got tested for HIV/lymphoma/glandular fever etc - all negative. I decided to stop worrying about this until I changed my tray one day and got 4 mouth ulcers and the symptoms again with crazy swollen painful neck and jaw lymph nodes, and that's when I realized that it was the invisalign causing these problems. I spoke to my otho and he brushed it off saying it was impossible as he never heard of it. So I continued the treatment for another 6 months- at which point one of my neck lymph nodes got to the size of a walnut, and excruciatingly painful. I have recently stopped invisalign as I though this was really affecting my health - my teeth feel very uncomfortable without the retainers as they have been moved for over a year and now cannot settle... my lymph nodes are less painful but still big, and I suspect will be so for a few months at least... what a complete and utter nightmare- I wish I had never embarked in this treatment or was advised correctly as soon as I started having these problems!!! Glad I am not alone, though...

At first I thought it was environmental allergies but the cough continued on to the point that I visited my primary care physician. She gave me all the prescription medications which have cured any cough in the past. The cough continued. We went on a short vacation and one night I forgot to wear the Invisaligns. Magically, within less than 24 hours, my cough was gone. Because I already have two autoimmune diseases, I don't want to risk putting whatever chemicals there are in the Invisaligns in my body any longer. I'm very disappointed my dentist didn't warn me in advance about all the possible side effects.

I heard from a friend whose brother is going through the same exact thing as me and she called me to tell me it happened as soon as he began Invisalign. I almost fainted and then realized that my symptoms were at that time as well. I'm so upset that there's no documentation about this so I called my dentist today and he says he's never heard of this at all and he didn't offer me any hypoallergenic options bc he said this reaction was not possible. I showed him all of this info and he doesn't believe me... Very interesting. I'm contacting the FDA and will get to the bottom of this bc no one should ever go thorough what we all did. I spent months on diff. medications, had to be put on steroids bc my throat was closing and thought out all theses treatments nothing worked.

In December i had the most awful cold and flu like symptoms with a hacking cough. I was ill continuously for the next 5 months with excruciating headaches, coughing and a feeling of fluid on my chest. I went to the docs 3 times (i just thought i had a recurring cold). I was prescribed a course of antibiotics which i took reluctantly as i had not taken them for years as i prefer to let my own immunity fight a cold. But i was so rough that i needed something. I know that normally within a day or so, you start to feel better with antibiotics - but as directed I took the whole course. I was no better. I could not exercise and was short of breath performing activities that would normally be a breeze. The final straw came this spring when i attempted a bike ride with my husband. I believe i had what can only be described as an asthma attack. Eventually I took my aligners out for 48hours at one point and realised there was an improvement. I have since returned to the dentist with my issue. He tells me that this has occurred in only 0.1% of circumstances. My health has improved dramatically in the 2 months that i have not worn the aligners. I am now wearing a standard retainer. My dentist now tells me the only option is fixed braces. This is not an option or me as I want invisible ones as per the value proposition sold by Invisalign. He tells me that Invisalign dont do hypoallergenic versions. So, Beverly I am keen to know how you managed to get the hypoallergenic versions. Can you let me know.

I had chapped lips, cracked and bleeding mouth corners, a burning, tinling sensation of the tongue. This condition continues today with the addition of the inside of my mouth and gums are bleeding and so inflamed and I do not want to brush my teeth or rinse. My skin itches. This condition has continued with lessening and worsening until today. I went to an allergist and was tested for food allergies. Negative. I have gone to two other doctors. I have restricted my diet, kept food intake logs. I am frustrated and fell horrible. The last doctor has suggested I no longer use the aligners. This is day 3 and the condition seems to be lessening however I have been told by the doctors that it could take a month for all symptoms to disappear. Why was I or my dentist not notified by Invisalign that this condition could occur? How did they get FDA approval? In December 2010 I received my first mailed-directly-to-me replacement aligners from Invisalign via Mexico. Then my nighmare began.
