Amusement Park “YO-YO” Swinging Chair Ride Recalled for Inspection

Chance Rides Manufacturing, Inc. has recalled about 85 YO-YO amusement park swing rides so that they may inspect and repair them after receiving several reports of injuries to children and adults from the rides malfunctioning.

The YO-YO swing ride comprises a series of metal arms that extends from a rotating hub. At the end of each arm a chair attached by chains. As the center of the ride rotates and picks up speed, the chairs and arms swing outward.

 
On May 16, 2008, 23 riders were injured on the swinging chair ride at an amusement park in Angels Camp, California. The sweep arms that connect the swinging chairs broke free from the center cylinder, causing the riders to suffer back injuries, lacerations and other problems.

A similar amusement park accident involving the YO-YO ride occurred in 2006 at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. Nine people were injured in that incident when the ride malfunctioned.

Chances Rides is offering state safety officials and ride owners repair and inspection kits as well as new guidelines regarding maintenance of the ride.
