Composite Deck Recall: Home Depot Veranda, ABTCo and LP WeatherBest May 14, 2009 AboutLawsuits Add Your Comments Approximately 48 million linear feet of LP WeatherBest, ABTCo and Home Depot Veranda composite decking were recalled after dozens of reports were received where the boards deteriorated and unexpectedly broke, in some cases causing serious injury. The composite deck recall was issued by Louisiana-Pacific (LP) Corp. and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on May 13, 2009. Individuals with the potentially defective deck have been asked to contact the manufacturer for a free inspection and repair if the decking is prematurely deteriorating. Composite decking is a man-made wood substitute, which is marketed as requiring little maintenance and lasting longer than a traditional wood deck. Although the size of decks may vary, more than 50,000 homeowners could have composite decks constructed out of the defective LP decking, as a 400 square foot deck typically requires approximately 875 linear feet. The composite decking was sold for between $1.50 and $2.25 per linear foot between January 2005 and August 2008. The Veranda composite decking made by LP was sold exclusively at Home Depot stores, and the LP WeatherBest and ABTCo composite decking were sold by building product retailers throughout the United States. The recall applies to various colors and styles, including Tuscan Walnut/Chestnut, Driftwood, Grey/Greystone, Pacific Cedar and Western Redwood. Home Depot Veranda decking is also made by other manufacturers, but only composite deck manufactured by LP are included in the recall. We installed it with a minimum clearance of 6″, some clearance being 18″. Two years ago the deck boards started shrinking off the stringer boards. To the point that we can not walk on our deck at all because the boards will fall through. We contacted Fiberon and they say that we didn’t install it correctly with enough ventilation space and drainage space. Each board had the same sticker stating installation had to have a minimum of 1.5 inches clearance space. Again our minimum is 6″. We bought the product through Home Depot. Home Depot will not back the 20yr warranty and said we have to deal with Fiberon directly. Fiberon has been contacted twice by a consumer products lawyer we hired and still are denying any liability. We hired a home inspector to inspect the deck, including the installation process (providing him the requirements from Fiberon) his report states that the deck was installed correctly, and is a safety hazard and should not be used. The report states that the deck needs to be removed and replaced. Is anyone else having this problem. I need help. Debbi & Jerry July 2, 2015 We purchased Fiberon decking from Home Depot in late 2010 and installed in the spring of 2011. The decking was properly stored inside our garage for the winter. In the past few years the decking has continued to warp a little more each year and now the . is splitting horizontally in the boards, just about and 1/2 and inch down in the board. Within another couple of years the deck is going to be unsafe to walk on as who knows when the board is going to break with the weight of a person walking. So far we have received no word from Home Depot and are trying all avenues. With labor and materials we have between $5000 to $7000 invested in this deck and we need to find a way to get this resolved! There was a class action suit filed against Fiberon but it seems to be closed now. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated! KArl June 17, 2015 this stuff is crap same as everyone bowing, staining, and mildew all over can not believe I spend so much money just want to rip the whole thing off!!! Bev September 6, 2014 Anyone having problems with Guardeck Prestige decking? We installed one two years ago and the boards are swelling & cracking. I checked the Guardeck website this morning & it is no longer accessible. Not a good sign. Anyone have any info on this product? Ralph R July 13, 2014 Veranda decking is one big mistake. I did my 600sf deck and after few weeks these mold spots showed up . Dont ever by this crop!!!!!!! Danna June 17, 2014 Our Trex deck is peeling badly; Does anyone know if anything can be done at this point? Maureen V May 20, 2014 We purchased this Veranda decking from Home Depot in Bristol, CT and it started to fade immediately. A few months later we noticed black spots all over the deck. We purchased this in April of 2012 and we have tried two different deck washes and nothing seems to help. Just fades the deck even more. How can we get some recourse? Please help! Reading all these complaints, has anyone had any response or has anyone received any money back from the manufacturer? Has there been a Class Action Suit filed? rusty April 18, 2014 I installed veranda for a client. It shrunk anywhere from 3/8 to 7/8 of an inch. Fiberon gave me a credit for the material through HOME DEPOT but refused to pay for labor to remove old deck and install new. Fiberon claimed it was due to poor ventilation due to improper installation (its a deck!) HOME DEPOT refused to pay for labor due to bad installation without even seeing the deck.CAN YOU SAY CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT ! Bruce December 7, 2013 We bought Fiberon Veranda grey decking from Home Depot in Oct 2013. Within the first week after a correct installation, numerous scratches began to appear on the surface. The deck is on a back porch and receives little traffic–and only regular type shoes have ever walked on it. The scratches continued to multiply so that the deck has become unsightly all over. Home Depot said to call the mfr; we took pictures and did so. Veranda denied our claim saying \”there is no defect w the material itself, but issues arising from outside causes.\” This answer implies that we have damaged the deck by walking on it. We will be visiting w Home Depot mgr to request that the product no longer be offered. The final solution will probably be that we will reverse charges on the Amex card; something Amex is good about doing when issues like these arise. Diane D. November 7, 2013 MY BROCHURE ON THE VERANDA DECKING SAYS NOT TO POWER WASH. I AM HAVING MY HOUSE POWER WASHED AND WONDER IF I SHOULD TELL THEM NOT TO DO THE DECKING EVEN THOUGH IT DOES HAVE THE BLACK SPOTS. HOW DO YOU CLEAN IT PROPERLY/ Jim F September 10, 2013 I have the LP Weather Best. Terrible stuff. Part of it faded, not all. I have stripes. What didn’t fade warped. Sent in claim on the class action lawsuit. LP says that the settlement puts in a depreciation factor making my 10 year warranty prorated at 10%/year. I’ve put up with this crap for almost the 10 years and now decided to get it replaced. But because of the lawsuit now I don’t have any money coming to me. I was never given opportuity to opt out of the lawsuit. Thanks a lot for dragging me into this settlement, Now I get nothing. Jeremiah K September 9, 2013 Very dissappointed in these materials. The cost alone for the materials and then the labor was very expensive. Jeremiah September 9, 2013 We bought our decking ( Trex Accents 16 footers Grooved Saddle) in the fall of 2011 from HD and put it down in the spring of 2012 and we are seeing all kinds of black spots all over it. If anyone knows how to get involved in the class action lawsuit please let us know. I am very dissapointed! Cristina August 1, 2013 I replaced two decks in July 2010 with Veranda decking purchased at HD.. (Slate Grey). The railing system failed immediately and was replaced at no cost. A payment for labor was made to my contractor for removing the old and installing the new railing. The replacement material is slightly different in color and texture as the original one. This replacement material also showed problems with cracking and warping.I settled for a cash payment. The fascia board start waving and pulling away and are cracking on the top all around the perimeter of the decks. Nails in the horizontal boards pucker up and the decking around them is cracking. Crack are showing up in the boards. The material stains easily and stains are not removed by recommended deck cleaner and material. I wonder if i have been sold a batch from the recalled material (2008/2009) which was manufactured in Meridian, ID, which is on the tag of the stuff that I got, and which was sold in WA, my state. My contractor is very helpful in mediating this situation, but a permanent solution has to be found. I intend to pursue this until I am satisfied! Brian C. June 13, 2013 I replaced old cedar deck with Veranda decking and railing purchased from Home Depot back in 2010….spent $4,000. 2.5 years later the top and bottom railing boards have warped horribly as the centers of the railing boards are bowing down and the metal spindles are now falling out. I don’t let the kids on the deck in fear they will fall thru the spindles. Deck boards scratch, crack and stain easily. Someone needs to step up and take responsibilty for this defective product. Betty on 29th April 2013 April 30, 2013 My husband and I bought varanda decking and have only had it down for a week and already scratched and leaving white spots on the top of deck .. I also bought this decking from Home Depot.. I am so disappointed with home depot I think if they sell you a product they should stand behind what they sell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They said I had to go through the manufacture so I called and sent pictures to them only to be told it was from weathering .. I cannot believe this has happened they also told me it was put up wrong like I said it has only been up 1 week… Really… They also said my 15 year warranty is now voided so don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’t let that pull you in as if you are going to get it fixed !!! I am now going to seek an Attorney … This is not over with yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lucille April 6, 2013 Purchased our Tuscan Walnut deck kit from ome Depot in April 2010. Despite taking gentle care with furniture, it scratched easily, split where screws were inserted and top and bottom railing boards warped by the end of summer. No help from Home Depot or Universal Products after MANY repeated attempts. 25 year warranty? The bottom and top railing boards are now so warped, the bottom ones are an inch from the deck floor and are pulling the screws out. Universal Product rep came out and took pictures last summer but to date, no one will contact us regarding resolution. I get so angry when I am on the deck and have to be reminded of wasted money. Not the relaxing location I planned to spend my summer days on. I would love to join a class action lawsuit. tammie March 29, 2013 my veranda from home depot was faded and stained the first year I was told it was how we installed it . we put it on top of the deck we had already wanted to cover the wood decking but i do not see that haven anything to do with the coloring and staining even the cracking and ends swell when wet. I brought my veranda in New York so is this part of the recall thanks Dan October 12, 2012 I need to replace my old deck that came with my house 13years ago. In NY where I grew up, the main problem with any decking was mold and mildew. Out here in Colorado, where I have lived for 20 years, it’s this very strong sun. Because of this I thought Trex was the answer. So I started researching Trex and many other Composites about 7 months ago. I was shocked at the amount of lawsuits there are. There seem to be better companies than others, but they all have a slew of complaints and lawsuits. Mostly due to fading, warping, chipping, mildew, and mold; even the newest time encapsulated product, has had a slew of problems of the past, AND too slippery when wet, and TOO hot to walk on in the summer. This drove me to finally come up with a truly maintainance free deck that would not fade in the sun, crack, warp, or get mold an mildew. My best friend is a commercial GC and has built many businesses with steel. So I figured a steel frame would be best. I know trex makes one, but they charge an arm and a leg for it, and have only set sizes and joists; plus you still have to roll the dice with their decking material. I wanted to be able to build a deck with NO restrictions on design. Because of the recent fires out here that followed the deck up to the homes it burned, I thought fire proof would be a plus too. Without getting into it too much, I started the prototype of this New Deck concept last week. It will have a steel frame and stairs and the surface will be 3cm granite. You can actually use any kind of stone; Travertine, Marble, Slate, etc. I already had an engineer design the structure, passed it through my local Town building department, and even had my HOA approve it(The toughest battle). If this deck is as workable in theory as it is in practice, I will be starting a brand new decking company with my GC friend that will change the industry. What I’m doing has never been done before. I should be done in 30 days and will share what we find out with this forum. Fingers crossed. David October 9, 2012 We have all of the frame work done for an 18X8 deck on our home. I purposely OVER built this frame for support and for underneath storage. After reading the comments about Veranda we changed our minds and went to Trex and found the same problems with that material? Is there a true material available out there or did they fix the problems with these so called “maintinence free” products? I’m not buying anything yet, but if anyone knows of something we can use, PLEASE let me know. I’m gonna get plywood and waterproof and cover the framing until I hear otherwise. I’m so confused now that I wish I never had a backdoor. Lowes, Home depot, and several lumber yards insist that this is the product to use, and this seems only an attempt at your money and they don’t care about the problems that people are having. If anyone knows, please respond to us. If anyone from the company knows anything, I’d like to see that response, but I know that they won’t. This is false advertising and if true, I hope that the litigation puts them out of business! Dave from New Jersey LOST + CONFUSED Steve September 27, 2012 I am a contractor with thirty five years of home building experience,I have just installed my first veranda deck! Wow what a mess , I feel sorry for any homeowner or diy er that attempts to install this product. First of all , the employees at homie d don’t know the first thing about this product , they only have an instore display to go by ,and they only stock one color and style . My customer pick coastal cedar , a color they don’t stock . So to get the color she wanted they charged 1000.00 more because it was special order .then it took approx. 2 and a half weeks for the decking to show up with no handrail . Then another 2weeks for the handrail to show up which was the wrong profile to fit in the post to rail conectors .so they ordered new connectors which took another 2 weeks and we ended up with a cheesy ” L”bracket that looks terrible . My customer is very unhappy with this but we where told that these are the only ones that would work . I started this process in June 2012 and just finised it at the end of September . In contracting , time is money , and I did not make a dime on this project ,contractors stay away from this product as the customer support is terrible and a huge lack of knowledge by home depot employees . Now after reading all the bad reviews about product failure I am very worried , sounds like a law suit !!!!!!!!? Gary August 10, 2012 I just finished my deck with the Red Cedar Veranda from Home Depot last month. I bought the boards in 2011 and early 2012. All 8 footers. Only split where I screwed it in. Used the Trex hidden connectors on joists. Is this just the grey or all colors and is the deadline over and am I too late. Switched to a different product and and working now with it, different shade though. Rob August 10, 2012 Spent several thousand at Home Depot on gray Veranda decking in 2007. A short 5 years later it is all cracked, spotted, split and warped. Even the railing material is falling apart. I will have to tear it all up. Home Depot and the manufacturer (Universal Forest Products) refuse to do anything about it since I no longer have my receipts. In fact, HD will not even answer my emails. I would not recommend Veranda mfg. by UFP or Home Depot for anything. JoAnn August 5, 2012 My husband and I don’t forsee any compensation coming our way in the near future for this nasty product, so we decided we didn’t have anything to lose at this point and we painted the deck. We cleaned it the best we could and painted it with porch paint. Covered the spots and we are pretty pleased witht he result. We only had the spotting, no warping or splintering of any kind (not yet anyway) so at least we can sit out there and not be aggrivated everytime we look at it. Good Luck everyone. Linda July 27, 2012 OK We Just purchased veranda Decking , would like some info about it. Hope you can inlighten me about my new buy. Hope they have fixed the problem .Please reply . Its Veranda Cedar Decking July 2012 Purchase. Its the heavies crap i ever carried . It better be a good batch. donna July 22, 2012 We also purchased veranda because we didn’tt want the maintenanace of a wood deck anymore. It looked beuatiful when we put it down but it staines easily and its full of mildew,The deck is in a sunny location so we nevr thought we’d have a problem with mildew..We have tried cleaners but none work that well even with getiing on hands and knees and scrubbing.Something we didn’t want to do. Needless to say after the cost and imtense labor of putting down this deck we are very disappointed. cheryl July 16, 2012 Same problem. Deck installed in 09. Put in all required info. Jumped through hoops. Inspector here today. He said looks like my dog chewed it. I don’t have a dog. Never did. He then asked if I had a pet raccoon. Told him to look at the rest of the deck. Once it peels…it crumbles. I also have boards that are cracking and separating. He said..oh..where. ??? I am sure glad I came home for this. We’ll see if they do anything. Inspector says will take 30 days. Gary May 31, 2012 Anyone have recent uses of Guardeck Prestige? What are the best products out there right now? David May 7, 2012 We had the deck installed in 2006 and last summer I noticed some problems with the deck starting to crumble on the edges and on the ends of the boards. But this was only happening on one end of the deck. I tried to get the company who installed the deck to come out and look at it and they won’t return any of my calls. I was telling a friend about this problem with my deck and he said there was a recall on the type of board we used for the deck. After looking at the web site and pictures of what is happening to everyone’s decks, I have printed out the claim form and will be returning it so I can get this problem taken care of. Tina April 30, 2012 We also have this decking and it is warping, splitting and shifting. Alot of the pegs to hold the deck down are cracking. The deck is getting alot of mold on it, black spots and has changed colours alot (faded). Our railings are becoming loose, it scares me for my children to lean on them. This needs to be looked in to for the price of this deck. We have a two teir deck and it is all cracking everywhere!! Angela April 20, 2012 We purchased our Veranda decking on June 1, 2007. My husband worked very hard putting this deck in and had spent the extra money on Veranda so he wouldn’t have to worry about having to put in another deck for years to come. But unfortunately this will not be the case. I hadn’t realized that we had gotten a “bad batch” of this product. Nobody had contacted us about this. Even Fred Meyer knows what we purchase and will send us an email or letter if something has been recalled. Home Depot had all of our information and we received nothing. A few weeks ago I hand delivered our claim to Louisiana Pacific LP Corp. in Portland Oregon and was assured that someone would be contacting me soon to set up an appointment. I have called and left a voicemail with the person “in charge” of setting up the appointments, but haven’t heard anything from him yet. I am going to be calling again today and maybe everyday from hear on out until I can reach him. JoAnn February 21, 2012 If there is a class action suit I’d like to know more about it. How do I participate? My grey deck is 90% covered in recurring black spots. Please advise, thank you. Patti February 14, 2012 Built the deck in summer of 2007 using Veranda composit from Home Depot. As of January 2012, the boards have begun to split, discolor and deteriorate. Boards tend to bow between joysts. Just found out about the class action suit (actually know the gal who authored it), was glad to learn there are resolutions out there. This was an expensive materials investment, as well as a labor intensive venture. marlene February 6, 2012 Everyone please contact consumer product safety commission I have put my complaint in and perhaps if more people do so this issue will be taken seriously.Go to their website under veranda decking and read comments. Frank September 14, 2011 I built a good size deck out of Veranda composite back in 2006 and have been fighting these black/gray spots all over it ever since. If I wash them away they just come back in the same places. Mine is Cedar and Gray color and only the Cedar is spotted. I think this stuff is crap and I should’ve gone with Trex! If there’s a class action suit, I’d like to get in on it. Carolyn September 12, 2011 your stories are like mine, first the spotting, then worping boards. Now I would like the info to help sign – on the lawsuit . Plus I recommended it to others, The time and labor and cost of boards can not be given a fair amount. How about the anquish and worry! Lowe’s is not standing by the product they sold, why? The manufacturor is finding all sorts of ways to get out of their liabilities and responsibilities. Evelyn August 25, 2011 I purchased veranda grey decking from home depot in 2010 the deck now has spots all over and you can nolonger purchase it from the store it’s on line only. When I called the company this week they told me they had no recalls and reccomended a product 30 second cleaner and expert deck cleaner and enhancer cleaner which the sales people at home depot have no clue what I’m talking about that’s if it even exists. Linda August 18, 2011 We had our deck installed in 2002, in less than 6 months the color changed and the slip resistant grooves were gone. According to LP this is not covered under their warranty!! Our very large/multi level deck looks like it’s 50 years old. We also have some areas that cracked so we were included in the class action law suit….we just received a whopping check for $19.85!! We have had several people slip and fall on our deck, as it is next to our pool. Has anyone heard of a lawsuit about the problems we are having?? We have been complaining about this since 2002, REALLY unhappy with this deck. I even filed a complaint with the FDA but nothing has been done;-(( Susan July 25, 2011 We had a deck (25′ x 32′) installed with weatherbest composite wood in April of 2009. The deck is now warped and the boards are cupping. We contacted Fiberon and they do not take responsibility. They say that the deck was not installed properly. Our contractor believes that it is. Fiberon will not even take partial responsibility. We contacted our home owners insurance company and they say the our policy does not cover weather related damage. Anne July 24, 2011 I had this decking installed seven years ago. It spot molds, the various pieces have turned different colors, it is NOT slip resistant, and black resin weeps to the surface. The material is also splitting where screws (yes, the ones they sell for the decking) are placed. Talks with the current company that handled it including sending photos resulted in being told ithe decking was not professionally installed. WRONG. Their excuse of water build up on the deck did not explain why the posts spot as well. All I wanted was to know if I could seal and paint the darn stuff and all I got was one contact from a company making cleaner, which came in when I was not home. I am really disgusted and cannot afford to rebuild the small porch, which I had rebuilt with this product. My advice? It is better to use wood and seal/paint it yearly. I have a slightly larger porch in back, which was installed 11 years ago and have had to paint and scrape it, but it is still better than Verdana. evan & jadine July 16, 2011 Had front porch and stairs done with trex in oct of 2006. The.first year only two- three boards started to chip and peel. we had our contractor turn boards inside out. color of boards had faded badly, but I could live with it. However this sumnmer, 6/2011, I now have at least 6-7 boards all cracked and chipped. Looks really bad. after spendings $5000 plus for a porch and stairs, I was suppose to have a maintence free area.for life? The ideal of having to re-do the porch and stairs is heart breaking. contractor, said nothing he could do about it.He was sold bad tres not know its quality.. Debbie July 14, 2011 our front deck is chipping, peeling away, warping and fading but the back one looks fine. anything to be done? Mary Jane July 11, 2011 So disappointed, my veranda gray deck was put on about 3 years ago, it is stained all over, slippery, scratched and faded all over. I purchased it at Home Depot because I am getting older and was thrilled to have a maintance free deck and its a mess. Shirley July 9, 2011 Can someone tell me if TREX is part of this problem? Beatrice July 5, 2011 LP Claims has completely stalled our claim! We’ve done everything they required; but they aren’t giving us the same in return. WHAT ABOUT CONSUMER RIGHTS. A LOUSY PRODUCT THAT FELL APART and left us with no deck to use for fear of causing injury to someone and they want us to leave it applied until they make a decision. CRAZY. Months have gone by with no call from them. Then they require a 2nd inspector 5 months apart (do they think the decking is any less damaged as they still have the pictures from the 1st inspection) and so they send an inspector from Bright Claims and he takes pictures/measurements of our porches; which has nothing to do with our claim and is not composite decking. MORE CRAZINESS. They claim to be documenting that it isn’t LP product. Well if it is up to me; LP will never get another dime of our money because of the poor claims service and disintegrating decking they sold. 1st LP SIDING DISASTER; THEN LP DECKING DISASTER. How many times does a company get a chance to take advantage of consumers! REVOLT CONSUMERS AND BOYCOTT LP PRODUCTS. Steve June 10, 2011 I purchased about 700 sq ft of grey Veranda decking in June ’09, it is all completley spotted and looks like crap. I am in the process of filing a claim with fiberon. I hope they take care of it all, so I don’t need to hire a lawyer! Huth May 24, 2011 LP claims has been unresponsive to our request for information and the only thing Susan can tell you is it is being review; Then after hearing that several times; she blames it on the contractor who came to our house claiming they didn’t provide information for 45 days. When they entered the information for our claim 10 days after coming to our house. WHY LIE ABOUT IT????????????????????????? Except to make an excuse for the poor claims service. The Oregon Claims Practice is not on their radar at all; as they do not stay in contact or provide information and I could go on about it. In addition; when you asked to speak with someone else besides the person who answers the phone; they won’t provide a name or a phone number. At this point; I want loss of use; because we can’t use our deck with the delay in handling of our claim. It isn’t like they haven’t put the money aside; they just are sitting on it. VERY POOR CLAIMS SERVICE for 80% loss of product. Don May 20, 2011 I installed Weather Best decking in March of 2008. I find that there was a recall on this product months before that time. I purchased this wonderful product like many others have to find it is junk. The lumber yard I bought it from had a good sale on it..Wonder Why!!!! David April 6, 2011 I installed Weatherbest (RED&GRAY) decking in the early months of 2005, I purchased the materials from DOLAN Lumber San Pablo,CA in Dec. 2004. My problems are light mold, cupping, splitting of post covers and fading. Each time I wash the deck (once a year) there is a high volume of red residue in the wash bucket and as I rinse there is a continuing flow of residue.
