Baby Car Seat Recall: Handle on Infant Carrier May Come Off

About 447,000 Safety 1st, Cosco, Disney and Eddie Bauer infant car seats and carriers have been recalled after at least three infants were hurt when the handle broke off.

The baby car seat carrier recall was announced December 18 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the manufacturer, Dorel Juvenile Group, Inc.

There have been at least 77 reports of the handle on the infant carrier car seat loosening and coming off when they were being used as a carrier. The manufacturer is aware of at least incidents where infants suffered injuries after falling when the carrier handle came loose, including one head injury.

The car seats were sold as part of a travel system under the Safety 1st, Cosco, Disney and Eddie Bauer brand names in child product stores and department stores nationwide from January 2008 through this month. Products affected by the recall include:

  • Safety 1st Sojourn Travel System, with model numbers 22-057 DBY, 22-085 DWA, 22-057 CLN, 22-057 HRT, 22-322 HRR, 22-322 PTK, 22-057 LPH, and 22-085 LYN.
  • Safety 1st Eurostar Travel System with model numbers 22-322 KDL, 22-322 LXI, 22-322 OLY, 22-322 PRS, 22-322 MAI, 22-325 COB, and 22-095 RBK.
  • Safety 1st Lite Wave Travel System with model numbers 22-380 LGA and 22-380 MSA.
  • Safety 1st Vector Travel System with model numbers 22-627 WAV and 22-325 PAC.
  • Cosco Sprint Travel System with model numbers 22-300 FZN, 22-300 OSF, 22-300 CSF, 22-300 JJV, 22-300 THD, and 22-300 TWD.
  • Disney Propack Travel System with model numbers 22-627 AWF, 22-355 LBF, 22-305 NAB, 22-305 PPH, and 22-355 PWK.
  • Eddie Bauer Adventurer Travel System with model numbers 22-627 CGT, 22-627 FRK, 22-627 SNW and 22-627 WPR.
  • Eddie Bauer Endeavor Travel System with model numbers 22-627 KGS and 22-655 YTE.

The stroller portion of the travel systems are not affected by this recall. It also does not affect the use of the infant carrier as a car seat.

Any consumers who have the recalled car seat/carriers should not use the handle until they have received and installed a free repair kit from Dorel Juvenile Group, which can be obtained by contacting the company’s website at www.djusa.com/safety_notice

I am very disappointed in the make and the product! I also don’t want the repair kit I want my money back..if they didn’t take the time to make the product the right way in the first place how in the world should we trust the repair kit! I definately won’t purchase anything from them again!

wow, handles coming off? thats very crazy. thanks for posting. really not cool. what if it comes off when traveling upstairs? and it still comes off even after using the repair kit? sorry about your child Shasta, i hope hes ok

do not trust the repair kits!!!! I got the repair kit for the carseat i have the safety first winiie the pooh one. i replaced the parts and my son still fell! The carseat still came lose!!! PLEASE DONT BUY THESE CARSEATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have one of the car seats and I tried to use the website to get the repair kit and there isn’t even a notice on there or link to help me with it! I am highly disappointed!

i dont want the repair kit i just want my money back . if its on the recalled list then why should we take the repair kit what if something else goes wrong with it.

FYI, I had a dorel cosco three in one car seat that the straps would not tighten on the car seat. I could not use the car seat. When I called Dorel, they did nothing about it! So this recall does not suprise me, I am sure the cosco alpha omega’s will be recalled soon enough!
