OVERVIEW: The DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement system is a line of metal-on-metal hip implants designed and manufactured by DePuy, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.

The hip implant was approved by the FDA under the controversial 510(k) premarket approval system, which means that DePuy submitted the Pinnacle metal hip implants as substantially equivalent to devices that were already on the market and did not have to conduct rigorous pre-market approval testing.

Hundreds of reports involving DePuy Pinnacle hip problems have been filed with the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System, with many people experiencing problems while doing simple tasks like leaning forward, sitting down or straightening their legs. This has resulted in severe pain, dislocations and the need for hip revision surgery in many cases.

DEPUY PINNACLE METAL-ON-METAL HIP PROBLEMS: Orthopaedic surgeons and other health care professionals have been increasingly warning about problems with metal-on-metal hip implants, which can shed small metal particles into the body as the hip implants wear down over time, potentially resulting in metallosis and complications with the hip replacement.

The DePuy Pinnacle hip has been marketed to younger and more active patients, with indications that it is more durable and performs longer than metal-on-synthetic hip replacements. However, it now appears likely that the DePuy Pinnacle hip failure rate may be higher-than-expected, causing individuals to require additional surgery to replace or revise the hip replacement and accelerating the need for future hip replacements.

Similar reports of problems with another metal-on-metal hip replacement made by DePuy Orthopaedics resulted in a recall of DePuy ASR hip implants in August 2010. Several individuals have already filed a DePuy Pinnacle lawsuit as a result of complications from their hip replacements. Some complaints allege that a DePuy Pinnacle hip recall should have been issued for the same reasons that the DePuy ASR hip replacement was pulled from the market. However, the manufacturer continues to market the DePuy Pinnacle hip system as a safe and effective hip replacement product.
