Bologna Recall Due to E. Coli Contamination

About 23,000 pounds of Seltzer’s Beef Lebanon Bologna has been recalled due to potential E. coli contamination, which is believed to be responsible for a small outbreak of food poisoning cases on the east coast. 

The Seltzer’s beef bologna recall was announced on March 22 by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) after it was linked to four cases of E. coli food poisoning in New Jersey, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. The E. coli O157:H7 infections occurred between January 28 and February 12 of this year.

For consumers, the recall affects all 6, 12 and 16-ounce packages of Seltzer’s Beef Lebanon Bologna with lot code 01351 and a best-by date of April 22, 2011. Retailers have been told to recall whole chub packages with lot codes 01351 or 06337 and best-by dates of Feb. 14, 2011, Feb. 15, 2011, Feb. 16, 2011 or Feb. 28, 2011; half chub packages with lot codes 01351 or 06337 and best-by dates of Apr. 6, 2011, Apr. 7, 2011, Apr. 16, 2011 or Apr. 19, 2011; and 12-pound bulk boxes with lot code 013151 and a best by date of Apr. 21, 2011.

All of the affected packages will have an establishment number of 474 inside the USDA mark of inspection. The bologna was produced by Palmyra Bologna Company, Inc. in December 2010 and distributed to California, Colorado, Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania. It is a fermented, semi-dry sausage that looks similar to salami.

E. coli O157:H7 is one of the more common causes of food poisoning in the United States. When left untreated, it can lead to dehydration and potentially life-threatening illness. While most healthy adults recover from food poisoning caused by E. coli within a few weeks, young children and the elderly could be at risk for more severe illness. If the toxin enters the blood stream, E. coli could also lead to kidney failure known as Hemolytic-Urenia Syndrome (HUS).

My husband had bad diarrhea, and I was pregnent @ the time of consumption.. I didn’t get real ill.. but I gave birth on April 29th and i still do not feel well… A whole list of complaints.. would like to know and would like some compensation,…. this sucks..

ON MARCH 22 I TOOK A SANDWICH TO WORK WHICH I MADE WITH SETZER’S LEBANON BOLOGNA AND AMERICAN CHEESE. ABOUT AN HOUR LATER I BEGAN TO FEEL LITELY SICK TO MY STOMACH. ALTHOUGH I NEVER DID EXPERIENCE VOMITTING, I COULDN’T EAT UNTIL NEXT EVENING, AND MY STOMACH STILL HASN’T FELT QUITE RIGHT. I HAD A FEELING SOMETHING WASN’T QUITE RIGHT ABOUT THE WAY I FELT FROM IT.
