GE Dishwasher Recall Issued After Reports of Fires

Reports of fires and property damage have led to the recall of about 1.3 million GE Adora, Eterna, Profile and Hotpoint dishwashers.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the GE dishwasher recall on August 9, after GE Appliances, of Louisville, Kentucky, received at least 15 reports of dishwasher heating element failures.

The defective dishwashers have caused at least seven fires, resulting in extensive property damage in three of the incidents. No injuries have been reported in connection to the dishwasher recall.

The CPSC warned that the problem is due to an electrical failure in the heating element. The commission has determined that the dishwashers pose a fire hazard.

The dishwasher recall affects GE, GE Adora, GE Eterna, GE Profile and Hotpoint brand dishwashers with the model numbers beginning with GLC4, GLD4, GLD5, GLD6, GSD61, GSD62,GSD63, GSD66, GSD67, GSD69, GLDL,PDW7, PDWF7, EDW4, EDW5, EDW6,GHD4, GHD5, GHD6, GHDA4, GHDA6, and HLD4. The dishwashers were sold in black, white, bisque, stainless steel and CleanSteel exterior colors and finishes, according to the notice. The model numbers and serial numbers are located on a metallic plate on the left tub wall. It is visible when the door is opened.

The dishwashers were sold at appliance dealers and through builder distributors nationwide for between $350 and $850 from March 2006 through August 2009.

The CPSC recommends that consumers immediately stop using the dishwashers, disconnect them by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker that controls them. Anyone who normally uses the dishwasher should be informed not to use them due to the fire risk. Consumers who own the dishwashers can contact GE for either a free repair service or a $75 or $100 rebate toward a new GE dishwasher. They should not attempt to take the dishwasher back to the place of purchase.

Consumers with questions can call GE at (866) 918-8760 or by visiting the company’s website at www.geappliances.com/recall.
