Nap Nanny Recall Issued By Retailers Amid Risk of Infant Injury, Death

About 150,000 Nap Nanny baby recliners have been recalled by four national retailers, after the manufacturer has remained unwilling to take actions to remove the infant beds from the market in response to at least five deaths and dozens of injuries linked to the recliners. 

The Nap Nanny Recliner recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on December 27. According to the federal regulatory agency, the products contain defects in the design, warning labels, and instructions, posing a significant risk of injury and death to infants.

The four national retailers that have voluntarily agreed to remove the products are Amazon.com, Buy Buy Baby, Diapers.com, and Toys R Us/Babies R Us.

On December 5, the CPSC filed an administrative complaint against Baby Matters, LLC in attempt to force the company to take action in response to the potential dangers the Nap Nanny Recliners pose.

Despite the child deaths linked to the product, the owner and founder of Baby Matters LLC, Leslie Gudel, released a statement that the company didn’t believe the CPSC complaint had merit and that its products were safe when used as instructed.

A recall was issued for an earlier generation of the Nap Nappy recliners in July 2010, after the company became aware of an infant death and 22 reports of infants falling or almost falling out of the harnessed recliners.

Baby Matter LLC, then produced the second generation Nap Nanny recliner, as well as the Chill model, which according to the CPSC press release issued earlier this month, have been linked to at least 5 additional deaths and 70 incident reports.

The Nap Nanny Infant recliners are portable infant recliners designed for sleeping, resting, and playing. The recliners have a foam shaped bucket seat with fabric covering equipped with a three point harness.

The recall includes 5,000 Nap Nanny Generation One models, 50,000 Generation Two models, and about 100,000 Chill model recliners manufactured by Baby Matters, LLC. The recliners were sold between 2009 and 2012 at toy and children’s retail stores nationwide and online for about $130.

The CPSC recommends that consumers immediately stop using these products and review the return policy from the retailer the product was purchased.
