Toyota, Lexus Recall Issued Over Brake Problems That Could Cause Crash

More than 16,000 newer model Toyota and Lexus vehicles are being recalled due to a risk that the braking system actuator may have been equipped with damaged O-rings, resulting in improper brake fluid pressure that could lead to the loss of vehicle control and an auto accident. 

The Toyota recall (PDF) was announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on April 20, after the auto maker was notified by its supplier that some of the brake actuators may have been delivered for assembly with damaged O-rings that could cause insufficient brake fluid pressure and increase the risk of a crash from loss of vehicle control. To date, no injuries or crashes have been reported.

In mid-February, Toyota was alerted by a parts supplier that some of the actuators supplied for certain 2016 model Toyota and Lexus vehicles may have been delivered for assembly with pumps containing damaged O-rings that may allow insufficient brake fluid pressure to control the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Traction Control System (TRAC), and Vehicle Stability Control System (VSC). After further analysis and calculations, Toyota determined that the problem was serious enough to merit a recall.

The recall includes certain 2016 Toyota RAV4 vehicles manufactured from October 30, 2015 to February 3, 2016, 2016 Lexus RX350 vehicles manufactured from October 26, 2015 to February 8, 2016, and 2016 Lexus E350 vehicles manufactured from September 1, 2015 to February 29, 2016. The recall includes a total of 16,656 vehicles that were manufactured By Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing and sold throughout the United States at licensed dealers.

The NHTSA indicates that Toyota will begin notifying affected owners by first class mail, with instructions on scheduling an appointment with their local dealer to have the brake actuator inspected and replaced if necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on June 5, 2016. Customers with further questions or concerns may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 and reference the recall number G0I, GLC.

I have a 2017 Ls460 with only 33k miles. The noisy brake actuator is a real bad deal. What makes it an even worse deal is that Lexus says that this is normal. If i was in a 20 year old car with 300k miles on it, then yes that might be considered as “normal”. You would think that a serious issue like this would be looked into very seriously .

I have the same issues. ABS, VSC and other warning lights come on periodically. I have a scan tool that reads and clears codes, but they always come back on after various days or even weeks.

I have 08 ls 460 same issue Brake Actuator Assembly ascertained by a Lexus dealer. Called lexus they offered NO ASSISTANCE

I bought a 2006 Hylander for $3,000 had over 222,000 miles. Part cost $1895 from Toyota with 1 year warranty, replaced front struts came with brand new tires and brakes. Multiple previous owners. Neighborhood mechanic installed for $500. All warning lights were reset and I’ve use it as a daily driver for the last 2 years. Leather seats AC drives like new I’m looking for good deal on car with dreaded ABS/triangle/LSC warning light for a 600L/ LS or RX 450H/ GS450H mileage not a concern as long as the car has been well-cared for before it got to me. I’ll factor in the cost of the actuator assembly and installation when negotiating the price. I am wondering why this does not happen with the Land Cruiser/GX/LX class of cars?????

I also have a 2007 ls460 with a bad brake actuator several lights are on the dashboard and it pulls hard to the right when braking or just slide because the right rear wheel is locking up, very dangerous to drive and has less than 100 thousand miles on it

I have 2006 gs430 purchased last year i have 73k miles on it my actuator has failed. When i press brake it just slides. Beeping noise is just screaming in my ear. Took to a shop they laughed and said it will cost about $4,000 to repair and they dont even think they can get the part id have to buy from lexus this is the worst. Im laid off and use my car to door dash until i find work. Im probably going to lose my car and home because of this.

Hi I have a 2010 lexus ls460 also an the brake actuator is whining an does it while driving as well brakes keep locking up frozen solid an im still paying for this car I purchased it August of 2020 they told me the brake actuator was replaced under the warranty January of 2020 an I only put about 38k miles extra on the miles that was already on the car an the actuator has failed ready 120k miles when I bought it but they told me it was replaced right before I bought the car by lexus of Shreveport the car has 157k miles now the actuator actually failed way sooner like around 130k miles cause I use to wonder why it was whining all the time an never knew till I got on YouTube an start searching, not to mention the car has an intermittent starting issue has been to lexus of baton rouge, la 5 times they can’t find the problem I wonder if its has something to do with the faulty fuel pumps Toyota lexus just recalled 1.8 million vehicles but for the ls460 they only have 2013 to 2017 for the recall I have a 2010 so ill change the fuel pump myself in the gas tank an the fuel pressure regulator on the pump as well to see of that helps this problem came 11/2019 until now

I have 2007 LS460 120K and same problem on brake actuator, part $1,200 +labor $900… Three years ago, I had the problem of parking brake actuator, power supply and others and spent $3,000. I had engine problems 7 years ago and spent a lot of money. I will never buy Lexus car any more.

2014 Lexus RX450, purchased 7/2015, now has 66,000 miles. My car has only been serviced at the dealership where they supposedly check recalls each visit. So angry they never told me about this potential problem. $3000.00 before tax. Has anyone had luck negotiating repair price ?

I have Lexus LS 460 2010. Went to the dealer asking for recall for ABS actuator First they mention we don’t have a recall second time they told me your VIN number is not apply. My car have 70,000 on it. They told me the program expired on April and I show up in May. 2020 That is ridiculous because you cannot buy this part and only Lexus can do the program after that $3,000. I have no option to pay this amount I have to drive it just like that. contact the dealer Lexus corporation even Toyota corporation and not help at all. Will never buy or promote Toyota Lexus product again.

Having the same issues with my 2008 Lexus LS 460! Lexus Corporate office will not Man up to take care of the the expenses do to faulty parts! It’s just by the grace of God no one was injured or killed do to their manufactured parts!

08 LS460 with 98000 miles Had VSC and ABS lighting up on dash intermittently, and squeaking noise after coming to a complete stop with a slight pulse feeling. It was my brake actuator. Part cost 2600 and labor about 900 plus taxes, Lexus is piss poor because I have read so many forums of people complaining of this same problem. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL LEXUS!!!!!

I have the same issue with my LS 460 Lexus 2007 and Lexus is unwilling to give any help whatsoever when it comes to fixing this vehicle. I just purchased this vehicle 3 months ago and this happens this is really terrible.

My 2008 LS460 Lexus with 71 K miles has a failed Brake Actuator Assembly ascertained by a Lexus dealer. There is a recall for 150 K mi or 10 years, whichever occurs first. However. my Lexus was out of warranty in May, 2018 and they will not offer any help whatsoever because my warranty expired six months ago.
